    People here are talking about ethernet and ip, but all the PLCs i've dealt with use 4 wire rs-485. Some do allow access to the serial network via ip, using a windows app. I don't know if the plant uses ethernet (using ip, or another protocol), but it's possible, if they have many devices over a large area. However, you shouldn't make that assumption.

    It's not high speed, and it's not Internet. Some legislation is needed, because this is slipping out of control. The cable companies clearly abuse the near monopoly they have in many market areas.

    why, oh why, is it that everyone things more laws are the answer to all problems? don't you think there are a few thousand too many, already?

    if they are falsely advertising or violating their end of the contract, take them to (or at least threaten) court.

    don't get me wrong, i've heard of cox sucking (pun somewhat intended). if you don't resolve the issue, take your business else where and tell them why you are.

    If this were a socialist country, or Micron was a monopoly like Microsoft, then such a thing would be possible. However, this is a free market,

    if only that were true! i hate ms as much as the next guy and i used to be all for the doj going after them. however, ms is not a monopoly. there are MANY oses out there, for many different uses. just look at how the market is reacting to ms's high prices and low quality. linux is florushing(sp)!

    Normally, I try to make ethical decisions about where and what I buy. I pick up stuff made in the U.S. when I can (and it's not easy anymore), I avoid patronizing businesses that have practices I don't agree with, and I try to support businesses that benefit our community with our presence.

    please explain to me how buying imports is unethical. do people in other countries not deserve to make money from their hard work? are they bad people? i would MUCH rather have a developing country sells goods and services for money than have them get free money take from working americans by our government. trade restrictions are an artifical barrier that distorts the true valve of things. it HURTS US. what about poor americans, trying to make something of themselves? why should they be forced to pay artifically high prices, when imports are much less expensive? why should ANYONE? since i know someone will reply and mention "sweat shops": like john stossel(sp) says, what's wrong w/ sweat and hard work? those people are trying to make a living. when these socialist idiots go around claiming these workers are "victoms", the companies leave, making them unemployed! those people are good, hard working people trying to better themselves and the US meddels(sp) with their economy (hurting it). and wrt child labor, this country only recently could afford the luxary (yes, it's a luxary) of not having our children work.

    For instance, in the G5 (and the Octane) all of the busses are completely independent from one another.

    So, this means you can completely saturate say, your hard drive bus while keeping your CPU to memory bus completely untouched.

    i'm nitpicking here, and i know what you meant, but you just described dma, not independent busses. for newbies, it's the same difference as between a ethernet hub and a switch.

    Having an OS designed for 64 bit virtual address space would allow some nifty optimizations, such as putting every running program in a different address space, thus allowing slightly faster process switching.

    they already are, in every OS i know of.

    weight is MORE important than hp. hp can overcome weight, but that doesn't help handling.

    it's surprising how many people don't consider the weight of a vehicle when comparing them. eg, the guy at work who thinks his 3100lbs 175hp altima is way faster than my ~2200lbs 127hp escort gt.

    why would you need it on nix*? devices are standardized. eg, except for a few ioctl quirks, ide and scsi devices are the same, from userspace. usb devices often look like serial char devs (pda cradles) or blk devs (cameras).

    iirc, there was a kernel summit paper about a proper dependency system for init scripts.

    The JIT can optimize code based on the computer its running on, and not just a generic compile time optimization. So JITs have advantages as well.

    and how many actually do that? yes, in theory, jit's can be faster than generic-target native binaries. i think ms's clr is the right why to do an isa/vm. it should be language independent, a superset of cpu features, and unrolling. however, clr has a major problem: it will likely be even less ported than java.

    There is also something to be said for the G5's parallel memory busses. It divides the ram in half, each half feeding 32 bits of the processor.

    multibanked ram is nothing new. it's been around since the 486 days for consumers (iirc), and much earlier in big machines, i'm sure. afaik, most mobosthese days are at least 128bits wide. my alpha (up2000+) is 256.

    You could theoretically keep your instructions on one side and data on the other, and pipeline the snot out of it.

    which would just be slower. 8)

    no, it is only for the ai64 ("itanium") port. it has nothing to do w/ alpha, ppc64, mips64, sparc64, etc.

    If so, how can SCO demand that we give them money for code that's distributed but that 99% of linux users ARE NOT USING?

    it wouldn't matter if you used it. it would matter if you distributed it. ianal, though.

    it's not emulation, actually, it's just 32bit mode. the ppc spec specifies 32bit and 64bit versions. the 64bit ppc's are 100% user mode binary compat.

    It's "An universe" to people who pronounce "universe" correctly. The proper pronounciation is "oo-nee-vers" not "you-nee-verse"

    and so you also say "oo-nee-ver-sal" instead of "you-eh-ver-sal"? i have never heard anyone pronounce either word w/ "oo-nee". the only "oo-nee" i've head is from the spanish channel univision, which they pronounce "oo-nee-vih-shi-oon" (or something like that).

    just means you lack the information to guess the next event. given enough information, nothing appears random. for example: people used to think storms were random (or "god's will"), but now we know how they're caused.
