Perl is available for handhelds running EPOC (i.e., the Psion Series 5/5mx/7/netBook/Revo, the Oregon Scientific Osiris, and the Ericsson MC218). The installation is LARGE for a device of this caliber (~4MB of storage and running space). You can check out the author's web page for the port here.

Alternatively, most of the machines I listed (with the exception of the Revo and possibly the Osiris) come with a programming language editor and byte-code compiler built in. The language is called OPL32 (organizer programming language 32-bit). OPL is a relatively powerful language (even if it is interpreted), with the capability to expand (i.e., graphical printing functions, multi-page dialogs) via .OPX libraries.

The newer machines (NOT the Series 5, and maybe not the Revo or Osiris) can also run Java. Which may also meet your needs.

If you would like to learn more about programming the EPOC OS, you can download OPL and Java SDK's, and the included emulator, from the Symbian site (you have to register to download, but it's free. It does run only under Windows, though). One additional note, the Perl port will likely NOT run under the emulator (compiled OPL will run under both, C++, will not). You have been warned.

It will be a great day when Psion finally figures out how to let the world know about its palmtop.

I've been using the Psion Series 5mx (and previously the 5) for several years now. It does everything I want in a Palmtop. Can run more "real" apps than the Palm, and does them better than the PocketPC. Why does this great tool go unnoticed?

Just to give a few software examples, it's got a fine word processor, spreadsheet and flat-file database. (A relational database is available aftermarket.) It comes with calendar, contacts, email, web browsing ... all the expected items from a "connected organizer" And it does synchronize with many desktop apps.

After the standard software, things get interesting. There's a large and dedicated bunch of people making amazing things for the Psion. I've got Doom (yes, you can get it for CE, too), a PDF viewer , and pretty much anything else you'd ever want. It's a real computer, with real applications for it. And the crowning glory is that the Psion has Perl. There is even a project to put Linux on the Psion, but the built in OS is really quite good.

On to hardware: The best thing about the Psion is its keyboard, a real one. I can even touch type on it. No chiclet keys these, but full-travel good feeling keys. Yes they're close together, yes you have to do a key combination to get slash, but I can type so much faster than I can graffiti, it's worth a few adjustments.

The 5mx is as speedy as I need, 36mHz ARM processor; 16 megs of RAM built in, with a slot for Compact Flash cards. And the screen ... well, it's big, and useful, 640x240. The 5mx is brighter than the 5, but they still could learn something about bright screens from Palm. Oh, 16 shades of gray, too, makes viewing images much nicer. Finally, battery life: I get a month out of 2 AA batteries: somewhere between 20 and 35 hours depending on how much I use the backlight.

As far as palmtops go, I've never seen one that does everything I need it to do, and does it the way I expect it to be done, as does the Psion Series 5mx. Psion also makes other palmtops, the more consumer oriented Revo, and the larger, color, Series 7, but I still think the Series 5 is the best of the bunch.

I was in your position about 5 months ago and I got Green Frog Linux and am quite happy witht that. It is a small minimal distro, just enought to get you to a shell with a compliler and your basic utilities. I think the DL is about 26 meg.

It uses R2D2 init scripts which in my opinion kick ass. they are easy to admin and don't reqire any config app to make sure you get it right. It also comes with DevFS which did cause some headaches when I set it up but there is a new version since I installed GFL which may have solved the small problems. IMO DevFS is a good thing TM.

My adivce if you try it is download everything you'll need, GFL, kernel sources, devfs patch, and a good boot disk (Tomsbrst works well), and be familar with the chroot commmand. Then format your install partition and put these files on it so you don't need networking until your up and running.

Once your have GFL up and running it isn't that hard to build the rest into a perfect machine.

Yes, we've been working on ZZT engine workalikes for some time now. I've done a good bit of work on the subject. In my document The ZZT File Format, I have a lot of detailed information for anyone interested in working with ZZT files.

I've also been working on various other ZZT projects. I see JZig has pointed out my attempts at combining OpenGL and ZZT (he missed a picture). I dunno how well this will work out due to performance issues -- it's a lot more polygons than you think in those ZZT screens :) Part of this has been my ever-evolving libzzt, which is almost working now.

If you're interested in helping development (or any other slashdaughters for that matter), I could eventually clean this stuff up and put it up on sourceforge...

The other ZZT clone project of note is ZZT++, a C++ reimplementation of ZZT. It's very DOS centric, but the source is GPLd, so it doesn't have to stay that way. See zzt.org for general ZZT info and news (or trap.cx/zarchive since zzt.org seems not to be resolving)

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

I dunno how many other people this happened to but I might be helping someone... I got the gift of Q3:A for christmas this year, however it was for the Windows platform. I assumed that Q3 would be distributed like Q2 -- you could get binaries for the other platforms off id's ftp, but this wasn't so. That was a problem since I could never get my G200's OpenGL to work on Win98, but it flies under Linux.

Then I found this shell script someone posted on the loki newsgroup: it allows you to use the data off your CD with the linux Q3Demo 1.1 executable. It sets a couple breakpoints and modifies some stuff in memory. Posted at: http://www.linuxstart.com/~kva nce/software/q3full.sh

I think that, besides the _fact_ that both the LUG and the company want to register "Linux", the whole thing is like 'specially made' for slashdot.

After the "real news" (LinuxTECH trying to register 'linux') the LUG posts this open letter with some _really stupid_ arguments about how this company is evil (like "using the name of the well-known Swiss company Linuxtech" or "They freely used the word "Linux" in their company's name, "LinuxTECH". This of course allows them to enjoy the prestige that Linux holds in the business world"). That was not necessary.

Then, the company replyes with another letter that starts "Please note that our native language is spanish" because of all the english readers.

It's funny how both letters are formatted _exactly_ the same.

I thnk all the trademark thing is an important matter, and we have to deal with it, but this particular case was handled wrong by both sides.. I think they are seeking for more than "a fair use of the Linux trademark".

We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

As the founder of LinuxStart, it may be a good thing after all- e.g. Slashdot was bought out by Andover Net, wasn't it??? The bottom line is it is difficult to grow a site without resources, and most of us in the community don't have these things. LinuxStart is an excellent index of information and we are in ten languages, and the founders still do have total creative control, that's why we went with Internet.Com and not some of the other people who wanted us. BTW, there are bad guys out there, one of these folks would have ported our postgres SQL database to Oracle! Of course we refused!!!! In the end, who knows what will happen, but for now our staff is being paid, our programmers got a big bonus and we are still alive! We are out there promoting the OS, and if Internet.Com wants to help us, more power to us and them! We are on a mission, and will not take time to wax negatively on anything.

I've been carrying a palmpilot professional to high school for almost 2 years now and I'm seriously wondering how I managed to get along without it. It's great for organizing my assignments on the to-do list and for impromptu note taking. (After some practice, graffiti is just about as fast as writing legibly)

As for software, PalmOS is a lot like Windows in its choices of software: little open source software to choose from. But hey, I'll take what I can get.

Mini-success story: My high school has a rotating 6 day schedule. Classes differ depending on which day (A-F) it is. As far as I can tell, this is done primarily to confuse people. Now, the application launcher replacement LaunchPad opened its source (I don't believe it's GPL, but it's close enough). On the bottom of the screen, you can toggle between a display of the weekday, the date, and the time. I thought it would be great if it could also display the Letter A-F day.

So, I grabbed a PalmOS manual, found the date functions, bashed them together, and came up with the most useful feature I have on the thing to date :) Of course, anyone can take a look at it here.

Naturally, the full integration of my schedule comes next. Soon, I'll never have to remember anything again! :)

Yes, this sounds very familiar. I'm 16 and have been dealing with these types of people... well, ever since elementary school, I think :) They don't understand what I'm doing and write it off as boring and a waste of time. I discovered an interesting facet of this, though. While they could all care less about my kludges over the years, when I burnt a CD of some music I had been tracking, everyone seemed to go into shock :P Ohhh... so /that's/ what you were doing... No, that's just a part of it... Moral of the story: blind them with a shiny CD. I also took it upon myself to deal with the script kiddie overpopulation problem... no, I didn't pull a BOFH, I just worked for about a year to convert one to UNIX hackerdom... well, something like that. He runs linux and is learning C and various graphics libraries now. Originally, he wanted to learn vishul basik to do some horrid AOL thingie. Well, I put a stop to that with some good ol' trickery. So, you can learn to coexist with them, you just need to convert the unwashed masses when you see potential, and maybe expand your digital work to something they can identify with (music, gimp-art, etc.). Of course, I don't mean all of them. The ones who don't see what at all this has to do with football have no hope at all, ignore them. :)

I have RH 6.0 working beautifully with a Matrox G200. I did an "Upgrade" install over 5.2, but a real install might work better. I couldn't get the real install to work (and no I'm not a Unix newbie either). 5.2 works well with a G200 but you need to get the X updates (mini gripe... the FTP installer should give the option of grabbing updates if available).

I got the Quake to work briefly but I realized that I wasn't using GLX, but software only Mesa. Since then I haven't been able to get it to work at all, or any GLU stuff for that matter, although the X server does recognize the GLX extension at startup.

In case you haven't run across it, a good page for getting Quake3 to run with Matrox is at http://www.linuxstart.com/~kva nce/projects/g200.html. And for those that want more G200 info, see http://reality.sgi.com/ri pperda_engr/glx/matrox_stat.html. As I have noted, it hasn't worked for me yet, but it's progressing pretty well.

As an aside. Redhat 6.0 is a great upgrade for those of you running 5.2. The 2.2.5 kernel and glibc 2.1 make a noticable difference in speed, (and apparently make Netscape more stable, but this could be a mirage). It's nice to see that a company can issue an upgrade that performs better than the original. Thanks to all the hackers in and out of Redhat that made it happen. (And no, before you flame me, I haven't tried Debian yet, but I've got an empty partition just waiting for it.)

I'm crossing my fingers that this will work with my G200... I just got the G200 GLX module compiled today (and I wrote a thing on how I did it here) and it almost works with Blender tolerably... that is, it's nice and speedy, but the lighting disappears sometimes.

Maybe I should switch mirrors, this blasted quake download has been running all day... well, I'll keep you posted if I ever finish getting q3test :P
