I wonder what they have to offer. It's dead slow - try for your self and if you manage to get an actual search through, it will prompt with a javascript error.
Oh - they do have one thing that reminds me of google - the small "Beta" in their logo :) -
Re:Maybe a software solution?
I'm sure Microsoft is working on that:
Dialog Box: "You seem to have mistakenly entered the URL for %site_critical_of_microsoft% when surely you meant http://live.com/ therefore your browser session has been hijac^H^H^H^H^Hhelpfully redirected." -
Re:Unbelievable.
Yes Microsoft uses this here (try this with Firefox): http://shopping.live.com/
You can't use their Windows-Live-Shopping with Firefox.
So let us use the same on our sites and block IE too (that would be demo 3): http://explorerdestroyer.com/demo3.html -
ies4linux
ies4linux is a simple Bash Script program that installs Internet Explorer 6, 5.5 and 5 on Linux using Wine. The whole process is automatic and very easy.
I've got IE6 installed on Gentoo, and it runs... well, it runs well enough to let me test web pages I'm developing. It also loads mail.live.com after only crashing 2 or 3 times. *shrug* -

They aren't silent
They aren't silent, I think just rather unsuccessful at gaining momentum and large public recognition on a series of products part of their new online service initiative going under the "Live" name, including Office Live.
Not to mention .NET 2.0, which is the latest version of their widely spanning development API.
There's then Vista, and Office 12 under production, and even IE 7.
Actually, it was quite a while since I last saw MS have this many balls in the air. Whether they're doing well or not at it is another question though, and one that can maybe not be answered well until early 2007 or so when at least IE 7 and Vista is supposed to be done. -

Try local.live.com. Maybe Microsoft being based in Seattle helps

Um, I hate to be obvious, but did you sign in????
Once you're approved, you can go here and follow the links: http://domains.live.com/ -
Re:A few points
1. This is BS. I am on a Mac, and my domain is administered while I'm in Camino. I'm logged in right now, the URL is https://domains.live.com/Manage/managedomains.asp

Hmmm ....
You are not signed in. You must first sign in to access this service.
If you are a new to this service you may go straight to the Signup Domain page to get free e-mail service for a domain you already own.
Exactly what I've come to expect from a Microsoft hosted thing. Offline, proprietary, and an error message. ;-) -
A few points
I have beta tested both of these as well, and let me correct a few things here:
1. This is BS. I am on a Mac, and my domain is administered while I'm in Camino. I'm logged in right now, the URL is https://domains.live.com/Manage/managedomains.aspx and it works just fine.
2. I have used Google's domain hosting as well, and it's nice, but it's very minimalistic at this point. It is cool that you can change the Gmail logo to your company's logo though.
As for users signing in, yes, they do have to sign in via hotmail. It says so RIGHT IN THE ADMIN AREA. This guy couldn't find the big text on the left side that says "Users may access their email accounts by signing in to http://www.hotmail.com./"
WEAK. This review needs to be nixed. No digg. -
Re:Ask.com Maps and Directions
Furthermore, it seems that Ask's satellite data in some areas is much better than that of the competition. This is the first I'm able to explore my hometown in high-res, living color.

Hotmail is already fixed.
Have you looked at HoTMail recently? I'm beta testing the Live version of Hotmail and I gotta say it's pretty sweet. Not only is it very attractive, but the spam filtering is as good or better than that on my gmail account. It also has lots of cool features and is very well integrated similarly to the Outlook on the Web that many companies use for their Exchange servers. Gmail is frustrating because I keep getting the same exact spam messages word for word though I've marked them as spam about 60 times at this point. I was going to use my Gmail only for family communication so I didn't give it to anyone, but it somehow managed to pick up a spammer anyway. In addition, at one point Gmail decided to just stop sending or recieving email from and for my mom's account. Luckily she has an old Hotmail account or she would've been sunk. I'm not sure that this complaining about Hotmail isn't just the typical knee jerk reaction to anything Microsoft. Here, if you've got Hotmail, check out this site about Windows Live. I'm not sure if you can still sign up for the beta, but definitely give it a try. http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=

Windows Live Custom Domains beta
If you really were serious about looking at the MS offering, it's at Windows Live Ideas. You should note it's web mail only, if you want to pull it down to a local machine you'll need to pay, and be using Outlook because it's not POP/SMTP. Also the interface only shines in IE right now, as they're using the new, in beta, ajax enabled interface.

Much Ado About Not a Damn Thing!Rewind backwards about 6 years and listen to the mindless drone of support for Java processors. They did not last long because Java compiled into x86 machine language actually ran faster than Java executed directly by a Java processor.
Now, we have this multi-core, multi-threaded Java processor. It might be faster than a single/dual-core AMD processor.
However, I would bet good money (on AMD stock) that Azul processor is, in fact, slower than an AMD processor with the same number of cores and threads. The whole purpose of Azul is to sucker some venture capitalists into paying fat salaries to the managers and slaves working at Azul.
Also, the lawsuit by Azul against Sun is a mere publicity stunt. The supposed patents for the supposed technology in the Java processors of yesteryear are not worth the paper on which the patents are written. Don't believe me. Fire up Live Search (by America's modern-day Bell Labs) and try to find any of yesteryear's Java processor still being sold.

Re:Microsoft the in[n]ovatorMicrosoft isn't an innovator? Oh.
I don't really care either, but stop and think for a moment about how amazing it is that one of the most profitable businesses in history has no, and I'm talking no, track record of innovation. First lets get the moneymakers out of the way:- DOS. Helloooo Q-DOS.
- Windows. Continually evolving ripoff of MacOS and, formerly, OS/2.
- Office. WordStar did Word first, Lotus did Outlook and Excel first, all the rest is fluff and was mostly acquired anyways.
- XBox. Duh.
.Net is showing some signs of life--mainly because C# finally gives Windows developers a Java-like platform to write native apps on.
There are entire web sites that do nothing but try to sniff out one single innovation Microsoft has made to the world of software design in its 30 years of existence. They are instructive. -
Re:It's a non-issue
No it is not insightful, it is a senseless question. ASP is server side. "AJAX" is just javascript, its purely client side. Nothing about IE7 (or any other IE version) has anything to do with ASP.
A useful question might be whether Microsoft's Atlas library (ASP.NET 2.0 client-side AJAX stuff) works on browsers other than IE. And the answer is, "Yes!". If you don't believe me, head on over to Live.com in Firefox and tell me if it works. Yes, yes it does. And Live.com is running on an older version of Atlas than the CTP that was just released at MIX06. Live.com does support IE6, IE7, and Firefox, and supported the Opera 9 betas at one point (it seems that the early-March site re-launch broke Opera support), but not Safari. However, as I understand it the Opera and Safari non-support are problems which Live.com needs to solve on their own and not something inherently wrong with Atlas.

Re:Microsoft learning its lesson?Something from MS that works on MS competitors too? That's unusual. I mean, there's probably a catch in there somewhere, like with ActiveX.
Opera is still struggling, but Firefox compatibility seems to be a priority on their new Live services as well (btw, I like that finally someone is trying to move the search ui forward from last decade, even though it takes some getting used to..)

Re:The real irony here....
While we're on the subject, this post from you seemed quite reasonable. I may have jumped to conclusions in my last one, but you really did come across as a prick in your post I was responding to.
I'm actually a pretty reasonable guy. I call things how they are, and so that is "controversial" to some. Many times here on /. I post something that gets modded all over the place with "insightful/interesting/flamebait/and troll", and then I continue the discussion like this and get modded up. Look at my post history and some of the troll mods for examples.
The thing that kills me about people (including myself) is how rigid they they are about beliefs in things.
My original post was trying to elicit the feeling of "Hmm, do I really need AV software?" or "Hmm, is Windows to blame here?". I often make semi-ignorant comments about Windows to make people think and question if Windows is really a worthwhile platform considering its numerous flaws. I have answered that question, and I don't believe its worth it. I do realize that many businesses are "stuck" with windows because of 3rd party apps are only available for that platform, but now that Macs run on Intel chips, and semi-native encapsulation or virtualization is right around the corner -- Well, imagine not having to do Windows updates anymore? Imagine having a know working Windows system image in a window on your Mac that is secure enough to run your legacy app until a Mac port is available? Imagine not having to pay for an AV subscription? Imagine not having your paid for AV subscription deleting your files? Imagine again not having to do Windows updates?
And yes, all of my HPs and Dells are servers running Linux. My HPs are primarily Itaniums that kick ass! The Dells are just toy boxes for me to play with. I also have like 400 or so SPARC chips to play with, and other toys. I'm not a slacker when it comes to computing by any stretch of the imagination. Where I work, I don't think anybody really uses Windows anymore. I'm talking about the Windows sysadmins :) I don't interact with them much, and have been pretty much removed from the Windows world for quite some time, but I hear about weekly what MS is going to _not_ include in Vista, and what broken stuff like http://www.live.com/ is coming.
BTW, I'm a pretty big apple "fanboy", but I'm going to downgrade my G5 at home to Panther soon. I'm sick of the bugs in Tiger, and I have things to do with my home computer. I've also been modded as a troll for calling Apple out with their issues here as well. Oh well.... -

Re:Too much stuff
What web site do you use for search, by the way?
Google isn't the only game in town and isn't necessarily the best. I've been using Yahoo mostly and Google when I need to search newsgroups. I use A9 a couple of times a day (yes, I know the results come from Google) to get the Amazon discount.
Recently, though, I've been using Windows Live...the UI is outstanding (no more pages...just one continuous scroll through all the results - I expect to see Google adopt it) and the results are very good. I close all the portal-like features (news, mail) so I'm presented with a nice, uncluttered screen. -
TWO non IE-browsers?The two non IE-browsers?
- Mozilla browsers
- Safari
- Opera
- Konqueror
- Lynx
Where at least with Opera (8.52 Win2K SP4) no search is possible, just a loading message appears...
But the results with Firefox seem to be pretty good - when searching for 'Schlagzeilensammlung' (the german word for a collection of headlines) my just-in-time generated news / headlines site appears as first entry :-) Thats a few (mostly 4-5) places better than in Google - so live.com has to be good ;-) (well not exactly, my site is barely visited by someone else then me and 3-4 others - I'll never find out why it's listed that nice.)
[And a search for Windows will return the Microsoft site as first result...] -

XFree86 works
Yeah, it's a bit weird, but at least searching for XFree86 works.
Oh, and you can link to results pages, despite it being AJAX - they've taken the obvious tactic of (ab)using ANCHOR tags to keep track of what page you're on. (Not sure how portable this is - I meant to test it on a few browsers a while back when I realised you could do this, but never got around to it.) -

Image Search... lack of accuracy...
I did an image search for Karina Stenquist, the host of the mobuzztv vlog, and all I got was picture of Lala from TikiBarTV and one of Amanda Congdon. Nothing about Karina.
At least they provide pictures of hot chicks when queried for a hot chick, but I'm expecting a bit more accuracy!
BTW, Google image search doesn't provide anything...
-
Why doesn't everyone be useful?
At the bottom of the page there is a very nice link
"Didn't get the results you expected?Help us improve "
I'm sure MS will appreciate all your constructive feedback (no sarcasm).
Who knows, it might be more useful than bitching about it here! -
search.live.com
Maybe it wouldn't be so damn slow if they linked to http://search.live.com/ instead of the live.com homepage which just happens to have a search bar on it.
Tried the search engine....I prefer the old MSN/Google/Yahoo approach to the layout (multiple pages). Scroll wheel is kind of jerky with this. Doesn't feel right...probably just me :-P -
Unfortunately
Still the same hopeless page ranking. For example searching for spyware gets the same spaming site on the first 8(!) results, while the most popular removers - spybot and ad-aware are nowhere to be found. Compare with Google or Yahoo. Working on GUI and look'n'feel is good for users, but when the underlying application sucks, there is really no help.

Re:Complexity wrapper
Yeah, I wonder why they didn't stick with http://search.msn.com/ , it actually isn't that bad.... with the current http://www.live.com/ experience they can be sure that nobody will use this new service more than once (if at all - so far I didn't manage to find something since it's still loading).

actually... beat this. Google is way more cluttr'd
Simpler than Google
check and mate :P -
Re:Scrolling in the search window...
Ah, I found how to get all the thumbnails for images - just thought the front page one was it. Silly me! It's very slow though...
Been having a look at finding a solution for a problem I had a while back with udev not being happy with my nvidia card. Look at the differences in these results and tell me which is more useful: Live - Google -

Re:I like the "rest"
MS Live ( http://maps.live.com/ forwards to the right address) provides higher-than-google res in most of the US, especially rurual areas and the odd city that didn't get coverage.
That's a feature, not a bug...It also uses more outdated photos.

I'm just waiting..

Re:Google Maps and Europe
Lol, try Microsoft's, it's even worse. Here is a nice little comparison. And by the way, this took a while, because in Google, if I type in Paris, it goes to *gasp* Paris, France, whereas Microsoft doesn't have this capability yet

Google has the most coverage
Out of Google and Microsoft's offerings, Google has the most coverage outside of the US. Take a look at these links for example. I'll compare cities around the world and their coverage in the two offerings.

Re:I like the "rest"Really?
Horrid interface, and doesn't work with most browsers (what do you expect?)
But nice clear images at different angles.

Google maps is nice,
But I find http://local.live.com/ to be a little nicer for checking out what a huge place America really is. You can mark points of interest, zoom with the mousewheel, and get a nifty birds-eye view of a lot of places. Its in beta (and it shows), but has a lot of promise. The only thing wrong with it is its failure to work in safari (but it does fine in firefox and exploder) and some minor bugs (mousewheeling will sometimes zoom and other times pan).

Live
I am not a huge fan of MS products (since my workstation is a Linux box) but the interface of Live local is really nice. Right click support, saved state (I like the google driving direction overlay better) and a nice overall feel. And it works great on my linux box with firefox. Yahoo maps is okay, but of the three I think MS is at present the best (though hopefully google will soon come up with something new in their maps)

Re:I like the "rest"
MS Live ( http://maps.live.com/ forwards to the right address) provides higher-than-google res in most of the US, especially rurual areas and the odd city that didn't get coverage.
It also uses more outdated photos.
