For those who don't know, Tandem is a high-availability platform designed to never go down. Here's a link for those wishing to follow this tangent... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandem_Computers
Word definitions are set by the majority, whether you like it or not.
I agree and since only ~6% of computer users (ie. sole Mac owners) think PC only refers to IBM clones, the majority wins and the original definition stands.
To the state police, well done. Consider the dots connected. So you had a scare, no harm done. I am reassured by this. After all, this is the kind of response Micheal Moore wanted isn't it, rather than just one state trooper gaurding the whole coast of Oregon?
Ok, two things. 1) I actually voted for Clinton and Gore 1992,1996,2000. 2) As for Haliburtan, they also got no bid contracts in Kosivo with Clinton (and World War II for that matter)

I've always heard on AM radio what the right-wing wackos sound like. But, this is a first for me on the left. Let me guess, you heard this on the new democratic raido network?
Here's some advice, concentrate on finishing school and learning about the real world.
By your logic the comment systems on amazon.com or download.com would be worthless. On the contrary, I have found these services to be very reliable on the whole.
"It was during that year that Professor Burks met and worked with John Mauchly and J. Prespert Eckert. That collaboration led to the design and construction of the ENIAC, in which Professor Burks worked on the digital counters, on the rules to make the 18,000 vacuum tubes more reliable, and on making sure that the rules were followed throughout the design."
I know a lot about technology and I hardly think the layman should know these guys names. How about Turing or von Neumann?
Not trolling. I happen to build and use clusters for computational fluid dynamics simulations. We use commodity P4 processors and 100 Base T eithernet at between 50 and 90 percent efficiency. Thus, speeding more than 50% of the cost of a cheap node to increase efficiency is not worth it.
Of course, there are applications that benifit from the faster connections. I would just like to hear about them.
From the article... Varadarajan wanted a high-performance supercomputer based on a 64-bit processor and never looked at 32 bit. In addition, he felt that clusters imply gigabit Ethernet.
This is a pretty weak statement to justify the substantial increase in cost for the going to 64 bit and InfiniBand interconnect, compared to just buying more nodes.
As a builder of clusters, I can tell you that we are always looking for more bang for the buck. The xbox is cpu is at least 5 times slower than a Pentium 4 3 GHz cpu. Thus, it needs to be at least five times cheaper (including extra network and power comsumption overhead). A shuttle box with 1 GB Ram and GHz cpu goes for about $750. So at best, the xbox is barely breaking even at $150 per node. When you add chipping costs, network switches, power consumption, floor space and parallel efficiency, the xbox loses.
The playstation efforts, are to program the vector units, not just use the general cpu. Even with that it is not worth it now, but it is hoped that the experience gained with ps2 might translate to a quicker porting to ps3.

Nice mock up of an F22 but, there's more to an airplane than its outer shell.

That's my southern accent in print! Oh well, at least my math is pretty in print.

we are looking for math. Math is truth. Truth is universal.
Please read this for the correct usage of that term.

I love calculators, but why on earth do you need them for calculus?
I understand that the deep field is a narrow view, but could somebody please explain the straw length calculation. Why 8 foot instead of 7 or 1?
Thanks in advance.

I have Cox in VA. I have bumped up against the usenet limit of 3GB over 3 days.
I routinely download around 12 GB per month without any complaints from cox.
They'll just tell you that any significant upload activity qualifies as being a server--for which you do not have permission to be.

I would love to see this on a really popular post.
