I did a search on Google some time ago on the same topic and found some links on OpeneFirmware hacks to give a CLI style bootloader similar to the Lilo, BSD or NT bootloaders. I used keywords like openfirmware, linux, and bootloader, or something. I'll be in a similar situation soon, if I had more time right now I'd do the searching myself and report my results. -
Re:It's too bad Apple is an Evil Corporation (TM)
If only it would run on x86 hardware, Windows users would flock away from the evil empire.
Why? Because the hardware is cheaper? Not. Because the hardware is better? Definitely not, unless you mean better at toasting bread.
Windows users use Windows because it's all they know. It has a majority of the mindshare, so they stick with it regardless of any other factors. Users don't care about chip architecture!
As several other posters pointed out, I can't believe ill-informed opinions like yours are still circulating. Here's what it would really take to lure users away from the Evil Empire:
- A box that is just as cheap, up front, as the commodity Wintel PC - Apple history shows that the masses are clueless about Total Cost of Ownership
- Compatibility with their existing applications - current Wintel owners are not going to ditch their investment in software, and new owners are not going to risk non-interoperability with the majority of other users
For the first point, I'd say check the numbers. For the second, I'd say that standard file formats are becoming more common, and Virtual PC is there as a backup.

More Information Available....There's also an extensive article and interview on MacSlash today, which talks about the non-profit set up and a the fact that LinuxPPC will be using their own INIT scripts now instead of porting Red Hat's.
I think the move to a non-profit organization is more fitting with the ideals of the Free Software movement, and it's going to let LinuxPPC find capital through donations and grants, but still be able to control the distribution instead of giving power to VC's. A very nice move.
Jason's a great guy to talk to, and really a lot of fun to work with. I think we'll be seeing good things from the LinuxPPC gang for a long time.
(And Taco, check out last night's episode of The Mac Show. They talked to a guy from the Int'l Titanium Assoc. and he talked about how to anodize the TiBook's case to create some a cool custom looking PowerBook.)

Re:HmmmmNo.
When I was at macworld I was able to see the dock on the side of the screen, as the guy demoing os X to me was a nice guy, it can be done in one command see http://www.macslash.com for a picture. You will be able to do every fucking thing you want to a mac running mac os X, the guy told me that if you wanted to you could even implement a journaled file system if you have the spare time. He also told me about so people that had gotten X11 running on it with a boot manager so that you could choose what gui to use. That sounds like you can do alot. Also by messing with some XML files you can change the enitre look of the os back to the uber goth NeXt step look.

Grow the fuck up!
I'm not really sure which is worse; Wired for running this ridiculous story in the first place or sites like
/. and Macslash for commenting on it afterwards. Wired stopped being relevant years ago. Adults and many children swear. Who gives a rats ass! And please stop whining that Wired made fun of Mac users; WHO CARES Its wired! Yes, they use a lot of Macs to produce their magazine. Does that mean because I drive a Jeep I can't call Jeep owners yuppies or rednecks or "artsy-fartsy" ? Fuck off. This is a non-comment for a non-story.-info

Re:I'm replacing slashdot in my links... Suggestio
Here are several other Slash news sites that I check in to at least semi-regularly:
- Liberty Rally - political, but they're willing to bash anybody that isn't on the up and up
- MacSlash - Mac-centric
- OS X Talk - Mac-centric
For most of my needs, these are sufficient. At least until I get my own political Slash board running.

installing on pre-OS 9?
I first commented on this at MacSlash where the article's been up since this morning, but maybe there will be more answers here. How painless will it be to install OS X over OS 8? The story only mentions installing over OS 9.

Re:Let me get this right...>Instead of having a lawsuit against an unknown individual they are going to have one against an unnamed individual.
Actually, the individual has been named. His name is Juan Gutierrez, and he's now in the court documents. News.com evidently doesn't have enough backbone to print the name, for whatever reason. But, you can find it at MacSlash.

They are trying to eat their own dog food...
How many times have they tried to move Hotmail to NT/2000?
I know a manager at bCentral and every quarter he is asked about his migration path to 2000.
I'm sure every other department that doesn't use 2000 at this point is under orders to figure out a way to use it.
Ironically, Apple uses 2000 for it's beta knowledge base.

And on Slashdot, you can belong to any religion you want, so long as it's not Christianity.
Oh, you've noticed that too, eh? And over on MacSlash, there are even people who complain about my sig. (Hey, it's a sig, turn them off in your preferences if you don't like reading them.)

The sixth square == Rosetta Stone?
Mac Discussions sites have been full of speculation that the missing square is the fabled Rosetta Stone project:
An ultra-thin sub notebook with the Newton handwriting recognition software -- and maybe no keyboard. -
Gigabit Ethernet?
The only reason you'd need a gigabit card is if you were to run an OC3. This is 155mbit, and is more than even Slashdot can use. A 10/100 on a G4 running OS X with 512MB of RAM and Apache would be fine.. But do you really want to share your G4 with others? Personally, I'd wait till my site got popular before shelling beaucoup money on a server. Start with a little 200mhz Linux or BSD system. I suppose it would be better to go with BSD considering OS X will be based on it. Good luck, because even MacSlash gets very few hits.

MacSlash Coverage
Over at MacSlash, we have some intense coverage planned for MacWorld New York. Our team arrived on site today and will be providing our daily dose of mac news, straight from the Big Apple. We'll have at least four people sitting in on Steve's Keynote tomorrow morning, so if any announcements are made, including this (IMHO) ridiculous "cube" thing, we'll have complete reports online as soon as our people can get to their computers. Stop by and join in the discussion.

I really liked that "Signs" song he covered.

Re:Countries...What about sites that are in multiple languages? Do they have to register a domain for each language.
This is not a good idea. This is what the <HTML LANG="xx"> tag/attribute is for.

Re:WowCan't eBay just write some sort of filter/script that checked user input and removed any "dirty" words? I'm sure George Carlin would be appy to provide them with a thorough list
-
Re:Simple answer: KarmaIf someone had lots of Napster Karma, people would know they had "quality" music and want to download from that person. The only problem I see here is that everyone wanting to download Seek and Destroy from the same 3 people would tie up those people's connections and slow things down.

Re:Revoked Licenses
Maybe I'm nitpicking but, IIRC the licenses weren't really revoked. The licenses were valid for Mac OS 7.x only. When Apple releasd OS 8 they opted not to license it, thereby making it impossible to make the clones with a current operating system.
I never did understand what stopped the clone makers from buying OS 8 off the shelf for inclusion with their systems...

Re:why pull it, if it is not true?It is no secret that Steve Jobs likes to take potshots at the rumor sites, whther they are true or not. I remember in one speech he said something ot the effect of "If you read the rumors sites you would think that [G4 computers I think] will be available in a few months. It is available today form the Apple Store."
This made me wonder if Apple doesn't "leak" some info just to throw off the rumor-hounds and to make product announcements more spectacular. Showmanship? You bet, but it helps sell computers.
MOSR is "known" for being inaccurate in many cases, but that is part of being in the "rumors" business. Lately MOSR has been more and more careful with readers explaining that rumors are rumors and no one should base any sort of decisions on them until (if) they become fact.
There are those who aren't fans of MOSR though.
BTW, MacSlash has been carrying this story since 7:22 this morning.

Re:Same thing as Metallica...This is definitely not the same thing. These rumor sites are absolutely NOT Apple's friends. They hurt current Apple sales, and they keep people from buying hardware now because something better may be just around the corner.
Not to mention, that Ryan Meador and his pathetic site have a LONG history of being wrong on almost everything they mention. It's pathetic how much crap Ryan passes through that web site.

Support MacSlash: Slashdot for the Mac! -
Re:An Apple A DayIs that because, like the Maytag repairman, they don't have a lot of machines to fix?
Since the Mac techs aren't busy trying to install a
.dll that prevents the machine from booting properly or arguing over which distro of *nix is best, yes they do have spare time. That's also why TCO is less on a Mac than any other system.
-
some slashcode sitesI don't know of any other open-sourced sites (this is the point of your post). I don't think that website code is as likely to be under the GPL because it typically isn't distributed. If someone comes up with good code, the don't distribute it, they use it on their own website.
Anyone with a little perl knowledge can go a long way towards making a slashcode site into a customer support, file download, or of course a news and events website.
Anyways, here's the slashsites in case anyone is interested.

Re:Some questionsSince all 3 of Phroggy's suggestions are mainly rumors sites, let me point you to some more newsish Apple sites:
Mac Central is updated daily, and hosts Andy Inahtko's columns.
Low End Mac Posts links to everything interesting about macs (including the occational link to
/.) and has detailed specs for the entire mac line, 1984 - today.MacWeek sucks, but they cover the trade shows fairly well.
Mac News Network seems to me like it is mostly a forum for product releases and press statements, but a lot of people consider it a favorite. (They were the first one I saw publish the ETA for the Diablo II port, so there's one notch on their belt, anyway.)
And of course, there is the new kid on the block, MacSlash, who took the slash code, and added ugly aqua-themed graphics to it.

Re:Oh crapI'm going to keep reading his articles and bitching about them until someone at slashdot wises up and kicks Jon out on his wanna-be-geek ass and starts posting articles that have some relivance to those of us living outside of JonKatz's little world.
Or you could just not read his articles.
Regardless of who writes them, I appreciate a little non-geek reading once in a while. As for truth or accuracy, you can always take that with a grain of salt.
-
Re:Oh crapWhat's the problem with you people? I realize that for some reason a lot of you despise Jon Katz. Well, on the front page, a few lines above where you clicked "Read More..." it says "Posted by JonKatz on...." If you don't want to read Jon's (or anyone else's) stuff DON"T CLICK THE DAMN LINK! No one forced you to read his or anyone else's stories.
I don't have an opinion one way or the other about Jon's work, but I am tired of all you whiny bitches complaining about it and "wasting everyone's time...."

More Information and Useful Links
Over at MacSlash we covered the news last week in this story. We've got some more details, and some good links for more information.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Newer Technologies makes a pretty sweet iMac upgrade, too. Their videotape installation makes it easy to pop in and go, although it's only 466 mhz, as opposed to the 500 discussed in the article above.
