Re:The Distant Worlds series is pretty good
Oops, posted as AC by mistake. Forum is here

DayZ Standalone et al
Loved the mod for Arma 2, got the alpha right away, have over 100 hours in. Features are still coming, but for me it's already fun. Been snowed in a lot lately, so lots of time for gaming.
Also:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution: The original game is one of my all time favorites. I like this one, too.
Borderlands
Banished: Cool, indie strategy/building game. Also love FTL, and Dwarf Fortress is always on rotation.
Others have mentioned Alpha Centauri, one of my all time favorites, and it reminded me that a spiritual successor is around. Haven't tried it yet: -
Re:A much better solution
Strategy games are dead and gone.
I don't think so. For example, these guys seem to offer a good collection of strategy games.

Re:Not Surprising
Actually there was a pretty neat game called titans of steel that was pretty close to the original board game... http://www.matrixgames.com/games/TitansofSteel2/

Galactic Civilizations II
Galciv 2 would be a proof to the contrary. As are many strategies published my Matrix Games. There ARE hit indie games (there may not be much in the way of REVENUE, but the profits are good). Galciv II of the starforce fame was (and still is) on the RETAIL Top 10 lists in US, Canada and also in Europe (at least in play.com). Total budget was something on the order $500000 or so, IIRC. Ok, not just two guys in a basement, but still, very small developer and in my books an "indie".
When something is good, the word-of-mouth advertising can do wonders. -
Very strange list.
Looks like list auther is not very well versed in PC gaming. A lot of old/mediocre games in the list but not best free or free open sourced games like

Re:Part of the houston amiga users group. It had an incredible battlemech game that we just played to death (probably helped some guys fail college).
Your thinking of Mechforce, and it was awesome. I still run it on occasion on my PC using an Amiga emulator.
As a side note, it would appear that Titans of Steel is a similar game in concept of play and certainly has a similar look.
From the readme:
BATTLE MECH
BattleMech is a CopyWrited program written by myself, Ralph Reed. The Battle program is put in the public domain as ShareWare. The ARC file may be freely distributed as long as all files and this message remain included.
If you like the game and would like to contribute to the cause, please send $20 to:
Ralph H. Reed
P.O. Box 1497
Eglin AFB, FL 32542
In exchange for your contribution I will put you on my list of registered owners and will send you a copy of the latest Battle program and the Factory program. The Factory program allows you to design your own BattleMechs. You will also be notified of future enhancements to the program. My intentions at the moment are to turn this into a true role-playing game. The first change will be a single player mode where you can fight against fortresses and dropships. I also plan a Load and Save game option which will include loading preset scenarios. A player
controlled map generator is also in the works. Evenually I hope to have pilot files that will allow a pilot to gain experience and skill from combat to combat.

Re:Fighting the wrong battle
Which small publishers?
Matrix Games
Battlefront
eSim Games
Those three were the first ones to pop in my mind. And yes, I have seen their games available in retail. Some of them do sell their games online as well.
Of course, many games are published through bigger publishers (games like IL2 Sturmovik, Civilization 3, Europa Universalis and the like). -
Uncommon Valor
Uncommon Valor is an operational game set in the South Pacific from May 1, 1942 to December 31, 1943. 30 mile hexes, one day turns, units are tracked to squads, mortars and of course individual planes or PT boats.
It is *not* a tactical sim. The most control you have is to set operational postures and aircraft missions. Each day's action is fought out by friendly and enemy AI. Watching a major airstrike go after the wrong group is definitely exciting, maybe too frustrating for some. Your main concern as the player will be to keep your bases supplied and a steady flow of aircraft to the front lines. You get to do plenty of micromanagement in logistics.
The game is well supported, it got plenty of patching - sadly it needed it. The developers are now upgrading the engine to cover the whole frickin' war in the Pacific (and will then retrofit the new engine back to the South Pacific campaign).

Re:Plug for free PC mech game (off-topic)slashdot's posting script inserts a space to prevent long lines from screwing up browser views. Some people have a lower resolution and can't take the long line without being forced to side-scroll.
On the other hand, if you post an actual link instead of just the link text, it'll display just fine, and be clickable.

Don't forget Matrix
Don't forget Matrix Games; they have taken several of the best strategy games of history and rewrote them to be playable on win32 platforms, with probably the best work done on Steel Panthers: World at War (SPWAW).
They took SSI's old code for Steel Panthers 3, and rewrote the game so it would run on win32, instead of just DOS. and then, they made it free (as in beer).
While not quite as much fun to me as the original (the re-write only does warfare circa 1938-1946), this has got to be one of the most re-playable games out there.

This is not the only +600MB game available online
There's at least another big game, around 600MB.
It's called " Steel Panthers: World at War ", from Matrix Games. It's an übercool tactical, World War 2, combat game. You have different countries, scenarios, long campaigns, 1 tank is 1 tank... a virtual Saving Private Ryan.
It's just wonderful.
Even though it does not run neither with Linux nor WINE nor Win4Lin nor vmWare... believe me, I've tried
:( I can install it OK under any of those, but it works in none, sofar. Not yet :) If you make it work, under Linux, please contact me. -

Re:I don't know about you, but turn based rocksJust wanted to throw in my favorite independent TurnBased company Matrix Games.
So far they released a rewrite of Steel Panthers, with update features, etc. The game is high quality.
