Re:MediaBOX
Media box is pretty good software, Kon et al have done a wonderful job getting something that works (even if only some of the features). In addition they recently made the whole media box project open source over at sourceforge. Check out http://www.media-box.org to see. I'm also in the process of developing my own media desktop software (XP+.NET+Managed DX9 [no flames please]) as well (still in the planning stage though)

MediaBOX
One program that I've seen but haven't really used but is going open-source shortly is Media-Box.

Or here is a cool Windows Jukebox app.

Re:No, unless they don't think it will be cracked.
Considering the $1500-2000 price, it'll still be a dud even with the DRM cracked. They're marketing this as a high-end system with value-added features. Sure, anybody can build a DVR box for half the price with an ATI or Hauppauge tuner, but a GUI that works on a high res computer monitor pretty much sucks for a settop box. The big feature with XP Media Center edition is the dual mode GUI. One for regular PC use, and a simpler GUI for DVR/settop box use. There's a freeware project called Media Box that does pretty much the same thing. The other big question mark is the program guide. Tivo is $10/mo. ReplayTV is about the same or $200 for a lifetime subscription. Nothing in the article about whether there's a free program guide.

A different Media Center: Media-Box
Try Media-Box - a very promising application. Not full featured yet, but what's there is good. Kon, the author, claims it will compile on Linux too but so far only binaries for Windows are available.

Well, there is the media-boxOver at www.media-box.org they've got what looks like a more mature product than this, though, alas, it runs only on (yeeech) Windows (/yeeech). There are also a couple of projects over at Sourceforge.
Yes, you need to have your own hardware for these, but I see that as a benefit rather than a drawback. For example, I don't live in NTSC-land. So, that makes the ZapStation unavailable to me. But, with Media-box, that's no problem.
Also, with Open Source projects (like Sourceforge and, I believe, Media-Box), if you don't like something, you can just replace it or improve it.
I would think these solutions would also cost a lot less that U$1500.

Why not a Media Box?
Open-source and Linux-friendly, Media Box looks to be about the keenest solution that I can think of for this sort of thing. Aside from the fact that it requires at least a Book PC-sized form factor in your entertainment center and all the heat and noise that comes with it.

Re:Um, it's called a PCThe trick is to now build a nice easy to use interface for all that. One that your mom or grandmother could use.
Like this (admittedly in development)?
