Re: p00r Linux
I mean, does there even exist Windows XP or Vista in Swahili?
Yes, there is.

WSJ gets it wrong again
WSJ get it wrong again:
It also has used aggressive business tactics, some aimed at its biggest threat in the region: Linux, a Windows alternative that costs little, and sometimes nothing at all.
Wrong. Linux is not a Windows alternative. Windows is a poor imitation of GNU/Linux.

Re:OpenOffice.org vs Office 2007
Just so you know, there is a free Microsoft-provided addon to save documents as PDF files for Office 2007.
-
Re:Word viewer for free
Great! Can you give the URL for where I can download the version for Ubuntu?/P
Ubuntu comes with Wine by default, and it works fine with Word Viewer, so simply downloading the Windows version of Word Viewer and installing it, should be sufficient.

Re:Almost identical? Not quite. (MOD PARENT UP)
What are you talking about? PDF export is free to Office 2007 users:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F1FC413C-6D89-4F15-991B-63B07BA5F2E5&displaylang=en
That said, I use PDFCreator because it supports all programs, not just office...
And while OO.o is great, it still doesn't support > 64K rows like Excel 2007 (it will open the doc, but silently truncate the rows!). And before you all start flaming me, no, I do not think it is a good idea to use Excel for spreadsheets with 64K rows, in general. But from time to time, someone makes one, and being able to read it is nice.

Re:OpenOffice.org vs Office 2007
For the record, Microsoft has a free, supported, and well-integrated PDF exporter for Office 2007. It actually used to be part of the base install, but Adobe threw a fit so MS made it an optional download (with a link in the base install that says something like "Download a tool to safe in Adobe PDF format..."
Download link (first hit on Office 2007 PDF): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=4D951911-3E7E-4AE6-B059-A2E79ED87041&displaylang=en
I use it all the time, since I get free printing on the department's Linux computers and don't trust OO.o not to screw up the formatting on my papers/resumes/whatever.

Re:OpenOffice.org vs Office 2007
Fact check: Office 2007 can save as pdf with the download of a free plugin from microsoft.com. Also OOo can apparently read and write Office Open XML but only with the help of a plugin authored by Microsoft but licensed under a BSD license. I think it can natively read (but not write) Office Open XML.

Re:"Almost Identical"?You have a point. I would conjecture that the dissimilarities of OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office 2007 are one of the driving factors in OpenOffice.org's adoption.
.MS Office 2007 has been doing quite well in the real world:
The Microsoft business division, which includes the Office suite of software, grew 20% to $4.95 billion. Microsoft's Profit Rises, But Outlook Is Damped [October 24]
20% growth in one quarter. If the tech sector as a whole is in the ICU with double pneumonia, Microsoft has a case of the sniffles.
Microsoft Office 2007/8 holds 4 of top 25 slots in software sales at Amazon.com.
In the retail market, Microsoft Office is bigger than games.
It is bigger than anything.
"Here's the really interesting statistic," said Chris Swenson, NPD's director of Software Industry Analysis. "Over two-thirds of the dollar volume growth in the U.S. retail PC software market in 2007 can be attributed to Microsoft Office. The ratio of Office dollar growth to total PC software growth is 67 percent." The Year of Office 2007
The geek tends to quote the max price for the retail box that he can find - and it can be useful to insert a correction.
Office Home & Student is about $100 at Amazon.com, with a three seat license.
The price of four ink jet cartridges - and if you can't afford the consumables, you can't afford the office suite, at any price.
The direct sale academic price for Office Ultimate is $60. The Ultimate Steal If your employer has a volume licensing agreement with Microsoft, Office for home use is the price of the media plus S&H. Home Use Program

Save as PDF or XPS from microsoft. Works like a charm. I have no idea why they didn't include it as standard.

Re:Are you kidding?
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook. It has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor (with hyperthreading, evidently), 1.5GB of RAM (I upgraded it from 512MB), an 8GB SSD drive, and a 1024x600 screen.
It came with "Linpus" (a horrid distro of Linux), which inspired me to try to install a different operating system. (It performed OK, but they did their best to hide any advanced functionality like, you know, installing a program. No package manager for you!).
If you're a college student, Google "Microsoft DreamSpark." Ballmer is giving out free, full licenses to Windows Server 2003 and 2008, amongst other things, presumably to brainwash the latest generation of human capital. So, I installed Server 2003 Standard on my tiny little netbook and got some Enhanced Write Filter drivers from an XP Embedded ISO. It runs amazingly fast (EWF drivers are similar to what Live CDs use - writes are committed to memory instead of disk, which makes fetching those files later extremely fast), and can even play World of Warcraft.
So, what I suggest you do is figure out how to get Enhanced Write Filter drivers working on your machine. Prior to installing them on my machine, Firefox was almost unusable - scrolling down one line would cause a torrent of disk activity, which would lock the machine until it was finished. (Windows really isn't meant for solid state drives, it seems.) After installing those drivers, it boots faster than my gaming rig, and is hyper-responsive.
Since Tablet XP seems to have the proper handwriting support you want, try installing those drivers. It made my Server 2003 install perform leaps and bounds better; I'm sure it'll help XP Tablet, too.

Re:You know you are getting old...
Yes there is
Microsoft wrote a document (collaboarating with Hayes, the inventors of the AT command set) so that devices could identify themselves back in the Win95 days.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/1/161ba512-40e2-4cc9-843a-923143f3456c/pnpcom.rtf
Back then I remember buying a serial modem, plugging it in and being impressed that Windows installed Dial Up Networking, the Windows PPP client.
This COM port Plug'n'Play was still around at least until XP, there was a driver called SERENUM.SYS in the stack for serial ports that did the bus enumeration. I don't have any Vista machine with RS232 ports, but a quick Google search makes me think it would be present on a Vista machine that did.

Re:Useless Windows Update
Observation: For Every OS before vista/2008, it is a _Critical_ update. For Vista/2008, it is only "Important". Same vulnerability, same vector, same bug. Somebody is obviously sandbagging the exploit counts to make the new OS look better.

PC pharmacists?
Interestingly enough, Microsoft didn't instigate this action and in fact they wanted to work with Russian authorities to resolve this in an amicable fashion:
http://www.microsoft.com/rus/news/issues/2007/02/news_20070207.mspx
This is a real problem - how do you enforce copyright and intellectual property rights when the victim may have no idea they are in violation?
I know quite a few people who have been bitten by Windows Genuine Advantage. They purchased computers from a vendor who in fact sold them illegal copies at full market price. So they have effectively paid for an XP license but the copy they were sold is illegal.
Maybe we need to treat PC vendors like pharmacists? You must be licensed in the state where you want to sell a computer. Every computer sold must have your name or company name on it, and if you are caught selling a computer without a license it is a $1M fine.

Re:No Fcking update is downloadable for it.
You should look into Windows Server Update Services...

Re:Pretty serious
Actually that was a different (though similar) vulnerability it looks like. They linked to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-063.mspx but this is MS08-067.

Re:Simple Really YOU HAVE INCORRECT FACTS! apk
"That's not how it works. All of the library's
.text gets mapped, but the actual data is shared, so there's only one copy in memory. And, if there are pages containing code that no one actually uses, those pages need never be loaded into memory at all." - by SL Baur (19540) on Monday October 20, @07:06PM (#25447339) HomepageI know this, which is WHY I asked that question (that was a rhetorical question to AndyMadigan & others here - note the question mark @ the end of my statement you quoted? Thanks)...
So there would be NO DOUBT as to any of this I put out here.
(&, I put out things regarding this, & on a lot more than just that, such as showing how/when/where the code sections get mapped into a process' WORKING SET (not just virtual address space)), here:
http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1001489&cid=25459279
AT that point, I had to put out literal documentation from Microsoft, to show this difference between VIRTUAL ADDRESS SPACES, & WORKING SETS applications have, & what portions of libs/dlls go where into them, & how!
(the actual memory a process is USING = WORKING SET, not just mapping to its own space (VIRTUAL ADDRESS SPACE))
In that URL above, in fact, I outlined the entire process, with backing documentation no less, from Microsoft's MSDN:
----
Load-Time Dynamic Linking
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms684184(VS.85).aspx
SALIENT QUOTE:
"The DLL is mapped into the virtual address space of the process during its initialization and is loaded into physical memory only when needed."
----
That's done (memory mapping into virtual address space) so it can find the exported DLL function call tables from a lib/dll it calls upon, & then import them + the code called on (JUST THAT FUNCTION, not others @ that time), INTO THE WORKING SET of the calling application's process (& the exported functions CODE block, the single function called on, not more than that in ALL of the other functions a lib/dll has), + data sections fully get hauled into the working set address space of an application calling on a DLL/lib)
APK
P.S.=> Read a few posts here, and you will see I already covered that much, and FAR MORE also, in regards how libs/dlls load-instance, & how their code sections ONLY load into a calling application's working set (actual memory in use by a process for work) + data sections also going into it fully etc. & far more... apk

Better on YOUR part now, &, enough w/ the insu
"All of the code sections are mapped into the process, that does not mean they are loaded in RAM, but if the application calls a function in a given page it is loaded. This avoids the system needing to know which functions the application will call, while losing some address space. The reason for creating DLLs is to allow multiple applications to share the same code and to allow the library (which may have OS-dependent calls) to be updated independently from the application (so long as ABI is maintained this can be accomplished). - by andymadigan (792996) on Tuesday October 21, @01:28PM (#25456263)
That's it, right there, on your part (finally)... but, you omitted MUCH of what I covered, that this document from Microsoft covers in detail:

I covered nearly ALL, if not all, of that material in my replies to you. You did not, not by a LONG shot, by way of comparison... & anyone reading could verify that much with ease in this exchange between yourself & I here!
I * think * you & I were on the same page, as far as INSTANCING a DLL/LIB, for the MOST part, but it's more of a "word play/semantics" thing now, @ this point, as regards my terms of loading/dynamically linking, vs. your stating memory mapped files usage.
However? Apparently, ONLY after you had read the documentation I had put up though, were you able to properly & correctly revise & restate your views on this, vs. your initial statement I quoted last reply of mine here to you...
I mean, you certainly NEVER listed the amount of detail you do now.
I had, however by way of comparison, covered much of this process ALL THRU my exchanges here w/ yourself, & others.
For instance??
You completely OMITTED the fact that apps calling out to libs/dlls only load (page into their working set) what they need CODE-WISE, from said libs/dlls, as needed (but, not every function is immediately paged into the WORKING SET mind you, & the data segment goes along in full though).
(I didn't find your definitions precise enough of this entire process, in other words... )
HOWEVER - I tried to NOT insult you, as you have on the converse, numerous times to myself (& you have tried to, here now, yet again... ugh! It's NOT necessary man! I can say, however, on a GOOD note, that this was great review & discussion w/ yourself, & others here (this is one of the harder topics imo, & so is memory mgt. in general))

That's funny - because my replies had a LOT more detail of how libs/dlls load & work, than yours did... by far. I covered the entire gamut of this process... Did you, ever? No.
The PRIME example here? This omission from yourself, really:

How about Tax Anti-Piracy Day?
I think someone needs to put together a special day (today would be good) called the Global Tax Anti-Piracy Day!
Tax Piracy is when you have a company in one country, but then setup a sham company in another country so you can avoid paying your fair share of taxes. These Pirate companies plunder the benefits of the real country of origin, taking advantage of all the infrastructure benefits such as schools, roads, and police - but pay for very little or any of what they take by loopholes in their real country's tax system!
Just think of the billions of dollars lost by honest companies, and their lost innovation because of these Tax Pirate Companies. Think of the increased taxes that honest companies must pay. Think of the children who can't go to good schools because Pirate companies plundered the public coffers! This is a threat that must be stopped, and the pirate company's officers punished!

Actual Microsoft Link
Since nobody (including TFA) has thusfar linked to the official information page on Microsoft's site...
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/antipiracy/default.mspx
Microsoft has a 6-minute video you can watch in "Zune-quality" WMV or "Broadcast-quality" MPEG.
Thanks to MarketWatch for actually linking to the original source.

Re:This is not meant to flame
FTA the CX1, it is trying to push down into a market where newbies in life sciences, digital rendering, financial services, and other fields are playing around with supers for the first time.
25,000 that seems like a lot of cash to fork for something that you don't know how to use.
It's a fact: Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) combines the power of the Windows Server platform with rich, out-of-the-box functionality to help improve the productivity and reduce the complexity of your HPC environment. Windows HPC Server 2008 can efficiently scale to thousands of processing cores and provides a comprehensive set of deployment, administration, and monitoring tools that are easy to deploy, manage, and integrate with your existing infrastructure. http://www.microsoft.com/hpc/en/us/default.aspx
So this is meant for people that need a rendering farm or some calculations performed but have no idea how to build a cluster, again how big is this market? -
Re:Tired of Perma-Beta
Nobody's talking about perma-beta here. Firefox 3.0 was released four months ago. Version 3.1 has been in alpha testing since late July, is in beta testing now, and will be released in a couple of months.
IE 7 was released in October 2006.
IE 8 beta 1 was released in March, beta 2 was released in August, and Microsoft is currently working on beta 3. (I'm pretty sure they mentioned something about beta 3 in last week's developer chat, but I can't verify that, because for some reason they haven't posted the transcript yet.)
If you don't care about beta versions, maybe Slashdot isn't the web site for you.

Re:The benefits of cloud computing
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997253(EXCHG.65).aspx Everything I'm reading says there must be some sort of shared storage. That makes it a little more then checking a box. It also makes software update take one more step. Ya, it is easy but it's not trivial.

Re:What ye sow, so shall ye reap
If Microsoft kept their own tool up to date (Registry Doctor), Registry Cleaner wouldn't happen. Or just a (light cleaning) option in System. It was obvious that registry cleaning craze (which THEY started) would be abused some day.
I think MS got ashamed of registry needing cleaned or something.
BTW look at the "registry doctor" results on Google, that thing is really out of hand
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=tr-tr&q=microsoft+registry+doctor&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 (All results not malware, just 99% of them)All MS needed to do is keep the GUI tool accessible to user. In System Tools or something. People actually gets tricked by trojan promising a feature which their system already does when it is really necessary.
It is also a good one to show differences between Apple and MS. Since 10.2 (or earlier) Apple and developers deal with needless "permission repair". It was invented mostly as a security tool and the fact that MacOS-->OS X UNIX has huge differences regarding file permissions. You know, evil '666' type of flags. So, they added it to OS X. It became something like phantom fix for every issue, there are people who runs it before and after each update. Apple figured it and instead of fighting their own community (and open door to malware), they OPTIMISED the process. Tiger "repairs permissions" faster than ever! Is it needed? Hell no, in 99.99% of cases. They just improved the mythical "I am fixing my OS" experience of their users (customers).
What MS had to do was provide a basic tool which does the same thing using the Core OS function, a good progress bar. Or perhaps make the own functionality less conservative (scanreg.ini)
For people interested, here is the documentation of actual registry cleaning core command of Windows.

check out MSDN's page on what CSS IE8 will support
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc351024.aspx
If they had simply added to this list: CSS 3 columns, multiple backgrounds, and
border-radius, I think I'd be pretty satisfied with it. *sigh*Well, that's also not taking into account the abysmal js performance
it's going to have compared to FF3.1, Safari/Chrome & Opera. At least they got most of CSS 2.1 in there. We can treat it as the
retarded sibling, rather than the quadriplegic sibling that has to be
turned a couple of times a day so it doesn't get bed sores.I think IE8 will be a great competitor to Firefox.
Firefox v1.5.
