Ubuntu comes with Wine by default, and it works fine with Word Viewer, so simply downloading the Windows version of Word Viewer and installing it, should be sufficient.

That said, I use PDFCreator because it supports all programs, not just office...

And while OO.o is great, it still doesn't support > 64K rows like Excel 2007 (it will open the doc, but silently truncate the rows!). And before you all start flaming me, no, I do not think it is a good idea to use Excel for spreadsheets with 64K rows, in general. But from time to time, someone makes one, and being able to read it is nice.

For the record, Microsoft has a free, supported, and well-integrated PDF exporter for Office 2007. It actually used to be part of the base install, but Adobe threw a fit so MS made it an optional download (with a link in the base install that says something like "Download a tool to safe in Adobe PDF format..."

I use it all the time, since I get free printing on the department's Linux computers and don't trust OO.o not to screw up the formatting on my papers/resumes/whatever.

Fact check: Office 2007 can save as pdf with the download of a free plugin from microsoft.com. Also OOo can apparently read and write Office Open XML but only with the help of a plugin authored by Microsoft but licensed under a BSD license. I think it can natively read (but not write) Office Open XML.

Save as PDF or XPS from microsoft. Works like a charm. I have no idea why they didn't include it as standard.

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook. It has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor (with hyperthreading, evidently), 1.5GB of RAM (I upgraded it from 512MB), an 8GB SSD drive, and a 1024x600 screen.

It came with "Linpus" (a horrid distro of Linux), which inspired me to try to install a different operating system. (It performed OK, but they did their best to hide any advanced functionality like, you know, installing a program. No package manager for you!).

If you're a college student, Google "Microsoft DreamSpark." Ballmer is giving out free, full licenses to Windows Server 2003 and 2008, amongst other things, presumably to brainwash the latest generation of human capital. So, I installed Server 2003 Standard on my tiny little netbook and got some Enhanced Write Filter drivers from an XP Embedded ISO. It runs amazingly fast (EWF drivers are similar to what Live CDs use - writes are committed to memory instead of disk, which makes fetching those files later extremely fast), and can even play World of Warcraft.

So, what I suggest you do is figure out how to get Enhanced Write Filter drivers working on your machine. Prior to installing them on my machine, Firefox was almost unusable - scrolling down one line would cause a torrent of disk activity, which would lock the machine until it was finished. (Windows really isn't meant for solid state drives, it seems.) After installing those drivers, it boots faster than my gaming rig, and is hyper-responsive.

Since Tablet XP seems to have the proper handwriting support you want, try installing those drivers. It made my Server 2003 install perform leaps and bounds better; I'm sure it'll help XP Tablet, too.

Back then I remember buying a serial modem, plugging it in and being impressed that Windows installed Dial Up Networking, the Windows PPP client.

This COM port Plug'n'Play was still around at least until XP, there was a driver called SERENUM.SYS in the stack for serial ports that did the bus enumeration. I don't have any Vista machine with RS232 ports, but a quick Google search makes me think it would be present on a Vista machine that did.

Observation: For Every OS before vista/2008, it is a _Critical_ update. For Vista/2008, it is only "Important". Same vulnerability, same vector, same bug. Somebody is obviously sandbagging the exploit counts to make the new OS look better.

This is a real problem - how do you enforce copyright and intellectual property rights when the victim may have no idea they are in violation?

I know quite a few people who have been bitten by Windows Genuine Advantage. They purchased computers from a vendor who in fact sold them illegal copies at full market price. So they have effectively paid for an XP license but the copy they were sold is illegal.

Maybe we need to treat PC vendors like pharmacists? You must be licensed in the state where you want to sell a computer. Every computer sold must have your name or company name on it, and if you are caught selling a computer without a license it is a $1M fine.

Nobody's talking about perma-beta here. Firefox 3.0 was released four months ago. Version 3.1 has been in alpha testing since late July, is in beta testing now, and will be released in a couple of months.

IE 7 was released in October 2006.

IE 8 beta 1 was released in March, beta 2 was released in August, and Microsoft is currently working on beta 3. (I'm pretty sure they mentioned something about beta 3 in last week's developer chat, but I can't verify that, because for some reason they haven't posted the transcript yet.)

All MS needed to do is keep the GUI tool accessible to user. In System Tools or something. People actually gets tricked by trojan promising a feature which their system already does when it is really necessary.

It is also a good one to show differences between Apple and MS. Since 10.2 (or earlier) Apple and developers deal with needless "permission repair". It was invented mostly as a security tool and the fact that MacOS-->OS X UNIX has huge differences regarding file permissions. You know, evil '666' type of flags. So, they added it to OS X. It became something like phantom fix for every issue, there are people who runs it before and after each update. Apple figured it and instead of fighting their own community (and open door to malware), they OPTIMISED the process. Tiger "repairs permissions" faster than ever! Is it needed? Hell no, in 99.99% of cases. They just improved the mythical "I am fixing my OS" experience of their users (customers).

What MS had to do was provide a basic tool which does the same thing using the Core OS function, a good progress bar. Or perhaps make the own functionality less conservative (scanreg.ini)

Well, that's also not taking into account the abysmal js performance
it's going to have compared to FF3.1, Safari/Chrome & Opera.
