The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments
In this same vein, I came across a torrent for a great book just a few days ago (perhaps on Boing Boing): 1960's "The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments" -- which is a phenomenal read. It's just what it sounds like: a children's chemistry text book. But it tells you how to do all the basic science that freaks out the government. It's an interesting slice of the era, too. It's all "yea, pesticides" and the nuclear future. It is, apparently, the book that inspired that kid in California to try to build his own breeder nuclear reactor.

The MTV stream doesn't work in anything but IE (ActivesuX FTW) and supposedly is limited to US residents. So if you're outside of the US and/or hate IE, you can get the torrent right here.

Re:They used to say the same about the office app.
It's not about looking for problems. Alot of professionals are pinned to certain aps, and those are the ones that are the most likely to switch so it is unfortunate. Also many of you are forgetting something very important. Who says i can't download a free OS with lots of nice aps and all at a nice speed ( http://www.mininova.org/ ). And i also can't get any good aps for 3d work (Maya/3dsMax). I'm not anti-linux, i just think there are a few holes.

Re:Stephen Colbert's Other Achievement
Forget the oscars, he predicted the Irak war before the first bush election!
During the Daily Show indecision 2000* election coverage:
STEWART to COLBERT at "the election center": What do you have for us? What's the word?
COLBERT: Well, Jon, of course, this year is the closest race since 1960, when a young John Fitzgerald Kennedy battled it out with Richard Milhous Nixon, winning by the slightest of margins and ushering in an era of untold promise, hope, and enthusiasm. Of course, an assassin's bullet ended all that. John?
STEWART: Stephen, are you seeing parallels with tonight's election, a country flush with prosperity, two young, energetic candidates, perhaps ready to lead us back to Camelot?
COLBERT: No, I'm getting more of a 'Nam vibe: you know, unwinnable wars, inescapable downward spiral, chaos in the streets. That sort of thing. But you know the night's still early. Be here till 11.
And lets not forget Steward on the recount thing: "People, when we came up with the name InDecision 2000, we thought it would be cute. Funny. We didn't expect you to run with it!"
Also, on the whole speaking truth to power thing, there was the Jon Steward on crossfire thing. (We thought wou were gonna be funny, "No, I will not be your monkey!")
The funny thing is that during the Daily show interview with Colin Powell Steward predicted that Powell that was the closest "they" would ever come to the Bush administration, I guess he was wrong there ;-)
But the best "comedy" political analyis was Jon Steward on Dave Miller live (from memory):
I guarantee that no matter who wins this [2000 presidential] election, we will be showing up on Bill Clintons doorstep butt naked with a sigar saying, "put it anywere you want, but please, come back"....

Torrent link
For the love of God, save this guy's poor server, and use a torrent instead. Remember to seed after you're done downloading. there's a pretty big demand for this clip.
Be forewarned however... the torrent contains the entire C-Span broadcast of the event. Colbert's speech starts around the 54 minute mark. Some of the other bits are pretty funny, including bush playing along with an impersonator, although absolutely nothing can beat Colbert's speech. Watch it. It's funny on so many levels. I've never seen such a huge disconnect between a comedian and his audience -- it took some major guts to do what he did.
I think this one's going to go down in the history books, and is by far the funniest thing ever broadcated on C-Span's airspace. -
Rip it. Seed it. Spread it.
Speak truth to power.

Shields up!
Incoming GOP crap-spewing about how the sketch was inappropriate and Colbert is a no-talent hack. I'm not a fan of Bush but I really felt for him up there - Colbert was brutal. Funny nonetheless.

Quicktime?From TFL
Viewing the trailer requires Quicktime. If your browser does not support embedded files you can dowload the
Whoa! RMS is going to crack it! .mov directly here.It falls to me to tell them they are doing so, that they with their own actions are giving certain large companies more power. When you send someone a ".doc' file, a "Word' file, or an audio or video file in RealPlayer or Quicktime format, you are actually pressuring someone to give up their freedom. Perhaps because I constantly have to bring this up, people believe I don't have a sense of proportion.
Note - I am not making fun of RMS here - I greatly admire his principals even if I am too lazy to always follow them myself.
Sometimes people take for granted that I will participate in those activities with them. Thus, when I webcast a speech, I have to ask which format it is going to be webcast in. I am not going to go along with a webcast of my speech about freedom that you have to give up your freedom in order to hear or watch. Once I put my coat over a camera before giving my speech, when I learned it was webcasting in RealPlayer format. [emph mine]
Oh - and anyone interested in hearing the grey album mentioned in the /. summary, a torrent. It is an amazing album. -

Re:Hahaha! == Iron Mountain"Which leads to the really big question. WHY are the media companies so intent on controlling things by region? What is the possible reason?"
Inside "Report from IRON MOUNTAIN ON THE POSSIBILITY AND DESIRABILITY OF PEACE" the world as we know it is divided up into 10 separate regions, see pictures of that here : 10-regions-1.png and 10-regions-2.png The world maps are from the COR, Club of Rome, and introduced in 1973. So this dividing up of the world is a Global Governance thing carried out by the CFR (Council on Foreign Relations), TC (Trilateral Commission), Bilderberg, Committee of 300 you name it. In a recent update of this map, Mexico was moved from region 6 to region 1. I really wonder now if DVD's officialy purchased in Mexico have their region codes moved from 6 to 1 also.
If you want to know more see :
Iron Mountain 1
Iron Mountain 2
Iron Mountain 3Allthough all OFFICIAL media outlets and payed for stooges declare(d) "Iron Mountain" to be a Hoax, go find out for yourselves if its true. After seeing the Global Agenda being laid out for us day by day, I say its NOT a Hoax.

I'd say it does
Until I start seeing a Linux-compatible site anywhere near as comprehensive (and inexpensive!) as mininova, I'd say I have no interest in downloading music! (Well, just kidding with mininova though – most of the stuff I download is Linux software
;-) The nice thing about CD's, other than being conveniently portable and not to mention available absolutely everywhere, is that there's no DRM... well, there may be software like Sony puts on the things but the music tracks themselves are unencrypted and easily accessible to CD-ripping programs like cdparanoia.
Kind of a bit off-topic, but I'd say it's also true with software stuff, too – while downloading can be convenient, it's also a real pain in the ass unless you have a really high speed connection, a CD/DVD burner... and it's even worse if you're on the server side. With my Linux distribution, I've actually been mailing out physical CD's to some of the mirror sites, because BitTorrent's just a bit tricky, and my server's located on my home connection, so FTP isn't really an option... -

Re:A Linux box and a cable modem
I second the notion to just host it yourself on a Linux box, and use BitTorrent to handle stuff. I was in the exact same situation as you once with my own distro, Ultima – and look where it got me. I've had over 8000 downloads now, all running off 384k uplink, a 700MHz Duron, and endless BitTorrent seeding
:-)
Couple tips if you're going to be creating a Linux distro:
Tell DistroWatch.com and get yourself famous. That's more or less how I got well-known. I'm not sure if they do the Windows-based distros, but it's worth a shot.
Know the good BitTorrent sites such as mininova, one of my own favorites, and The Linux Mirror Project. There's a ton of people on those sites who will download stuff just because it's there, and trust me, if you want instant fame that can be a very good thing.
If you need FTP, may I humbly suggest telling MadTux.org about your project. I myself heard of them when they e-mailed an offer to host my project for FTP download, and they're very, very friendly people. They do have a fee for downloaders, but to get your distro's ISO's or whatever hosted with them is free. (Tell them that I sent you, they'll know what to do ;-)
May be a few other things I've forgotten, but those are the big ones. Good luck! -
Religious works need fact checking, too.We need much better fact-checking on bibles.
Richard Dawkins, the well-known Oxford biologist, has been pushing for this lately. His two-hour series on Channel 4 in Britain, investigates religion the way 60 Minutes investigates scams. Part I, "The God Delusion", includes a visit to a US megachurch in which the interviewer asks the preacher some tough questions. He also visits Lourdes, and asks questions about the reported miracle cure rate and the types of miracles recorded. It's consumer activism applied to religion.
(The audio of the show is available on the site above, and plays fine. The video is available on BitTorrent but seems to have some formatting problems.)

Re:Unless you plan on getting /.ed...
Sorry I'm replying to myself, but one more thing I remembered:
If done just right, you can set up a Linux server and totally forget about it until the end of time for all anyone cares. My own machine, a 700MHz Duron with 256MB RAM, manages to run Apache, sendmail, VSFTPD, and BitTorrent – and not to mention MySQL and a few other internal-use-only-type things – oh, and OpenSSH as well for remote logins, and the occassional VNC session – without any problems; you just have to know what you do and don't need. I've set it up so that it only allows around 20 or so simultaneous connections, and just about the only time it ever needs tweaking is if there's a new version of Ultima Linux out. (And I should know...)
Another suggestion would be to choose a different program to run the site. I hear that lighttpd is pretty good, and mininova would probably agree with me here... I haven't used it much personally, because I've become overly dependant on Apache's mod_rewrite, but it's worth checking out if you don't want to over-burden the server.

Beyond American Shores? - There aren't any!
Wherever you are from, there is already a wonderful worldwide distribution system. It allows you to enjoy commercial-free TV shows, first-run movies (although a bit dodgy), almost any remotely popular DVD, LOADS of pr0n, games, appz, books, and almost anything digital you can name. It also has a filter system surpassing that of any system google or others can invent. The popularity of what you can get and how quickly you get it is based entirely on how much others like it. The sad state of the world is that this 'light-years-ahead of any commercial enterprise' system is so amazing, companies are messing their pants because they don't know what to do with it. One day, they will realize the error of their ways and follow the twelve-step prayer--
Dear Lord BT,
I admit that I am powerless over the addiction to entertainment I have created in others.
I admit that others become unmanageable if I try to control them.
Help me this day to understand the true meaning of powerlessness.
Remove from me all denial and help me embrace what I have created.

also everyone in this discussion (especially mr scented cone, who must have a pretty sweet job to be posting all day) should watch status anxiety and the ownership society. it addresses all these issues and more.
basically the guy argues that the culture americans (and indeed the world now adays) lives in is completly based around accumulation of wealth. That should be pretty obvious to anyone who doesnt have alot of wealth. Then he goes on to say that this culture, which has replaced christianity as the ideology of our times, creates status anxiety. Status is being determined more and more by your $ value. He also illustrates why it wasnt always that way.
you can get it from mininova.org its like 2gigs. you people probably wont like it though as it kinda invalidates your life. -
One Word - Analrapist
"Arrested Development", From S0303:
Tobias - "I'll have you remember I was a 'professional' two times over. Both an analyst AND a therapist, an analrapist."
Lindsy - "Yeah, and the business cards almost got you arrested."
Tobias - "I did NOT quit my job because of the police inquiry but because I wanted to help raise my daughter."
This is just a glimpse into the writing in this show, which has social commentary on par with South Park: George, seeing a military humvee and a pope mobile decides to escape in the pope mobile as it has "actual armour".
It has EVERYTHING. And it does it all well. The show is just as good if not better than The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad. Like those, it tries to capture the essence of American life in a humorous light. The problem is that unlike those shows, it has a bit of sexual innuendo humour. In fact, a big theme of the show is repressed sexuality, which is a perfect allegory for the American way of life. Violence is primetime viewing and a nipple is a national scandel. Sad. But a reason to cancel a great show?
