Re: Militant Slashdot
As I replied to you elsewhere in this thread, assault rifle is a made up category of rifle that is defined by "it looks scarey". They do not make killing people any easier than any other semi-automatic rifle, so no, its only purpose is not this.
AR-15 rifles are used for hunting very commonly, they are actually terrible for self defense as they are too long and cannot be used effectively in most hallways. If you want a self defense firearm, you are much better with a handgun (which most are semi-automatic as well) or a Mossberg 500 tactical loaded with birdshot or rock salt

The Mossberg works best as birdshot and rock salt is stopped by a couple layers of drywall and the sound of a Mossberg being chambered is enough to make most burglars run in fear. -
Re: a quick search
So a moose is quite harmless but an Elk is not?
Elk taste yummy. Ask to moose and bear meat . . . ? Well, as a friend of mine quipped, "It's tastes OK, if you don't mind the taste of smelly gym socks."
Darwin has taught elk to stay away from people . . . because they taste yummy! If you think an elk is just going to trot up to you to say, "Hello!" . . . well then, ich glaube, es knuscht mich ein Elch"
If you bag a big elk . . . you had better have a good sized freezer . . . and you will have enough meet to last you until summer!
Is that your message?
No, that's your message. I didn't write anything like that. The first thing hunters learn, is to treat their firearms with respect. The second thing is, to treat wild animals with respect.
Take a trot out your front door and talk to some elk hunters, and ask, "Y'all been having problems with too many elk coming up to you . . . ?
Can recommend a "tactical shotgun"

But if was just me . . . and a bear . . . this is would I would like to have:

However, I would not recommend this for ordinary folks. This is a serious firearm.
Shooting a polar bear with with pellet ammunition sounds retarded to me.
You misspelled slug
. Try googling on "rat shot" or "bird shot", if those the varmints that you are hunting.

Re:buy a security system + cameras
If this is legal where you live and you can find it, buy it. It might be outlawed soon though.

Re:Cybercrime Treaty: What it Means to You and I?
Funny, there hasn't been *any* activity on my home LAN for as long as I can remember. Yep, here are the printouts of the logs. See for yourself. Nuthin'. Backups? Got destroyed in the blizzard of aught-six. Sorry, nothing more I can help you with. You want to come in and see for yourself? I don't think Mr. Mossberg would like that

Re:Oh bullcarp
Even on Slashdot there are .45 afficianados! The
.40 S&W is a watered down 10 mm round because the FBI had some small women who couldn't reliably hold the large grip from a 15 round double stack 10 mm and had trouble taming the recoil in the earlier 10 mm frames. The Glock I shoot is actually fairly tame, at least on the shooter's end. On the shootee's side.... Some people credit the plastic frame for reducing the felt recoil. That may be a part of it, but I think the much larger consideration is the gun's geometry and the dynamics at work when it cycles.I'm definitely not a dealer, and I have a general dislike for marketing hype. I use the "+P" designation to refer to loads with chamber pressure above the original SAAMI spec. The modern
.45 ACP has benefitted a lot from improved metalurgy and machining, and can shoot much hotter loads than the original 1911, which is part of what has kept the .45 as a popular round. The 10 mm was designed much later, so it was specified for the much higher chamber pressures that modern handguns can tolerate, so there really are no +P loads for the 10 mm.There is no doubt that the
.45 is a formidable round, and the modern .45 handguns are every bit as reliable as any other autoloader. The .45 has a bad reputation as a twitchy and unreliable gun because many people's only experience is with old .45s that never worked well because they were built prior to WWII, and many of those have been mangled by unskilled gunsmiths. The bad reputation is not deserved when comparing a modern .45 to any other modern handgun.I certainly wouldn't want to be shot by a
.45 or a 10 mm. However, the 25% higher kinetic energy of the 10 mm is a ballistic fact. The 10 mm is often used for hunting bear, probably because the higher energy and slightly smaller diameter can translate into greater penetration if needed. A good hollow point bullet can be designed to expand as little or as much as needed, but if penetration is needed, a slower and larger diameter will penetrate less. I haven't read nearly as many reports of dangerous animals being hunted with a .45, despite the fact that the .45 has been around a lot longer and there are a lot more of them. The ballistics of a 10 mm are similar to a
.357 magnum, but with a bit more mass and a bit less velocity. My G20 is basically a 16 shot .357 magnum. If that doesn't do it, I recently bought a nice 12 gauge defensive shotgun, the Mossberg 590, #50668. After having shot it, I'd say if that didn't stop whatever I was shooting I'd save the last round for me because I wouldn't want to mess with anything that didn't fall to eight rounds from the 12 gauge! -
Re:Don't be a metrosexual
Ok, a lil pet peeve of mine, shotguns can miss, especially at closer ranges. Check the shot patterns of your average turkey load at 15', its about the size of two fists.
Now, what I can suggest is choose a high capacity shotgun, like a mossberg 590 and train a fair amount, at least a few hours every couple of months. If you want intimidation, the 590 is really is useful since it is pump action(very audible) and it can come with a bayonet lug. ;) -
Re:Carry a gunAccording to these guys (in perhaps a more fitting forum for discussing this topic), you may want one of these, or one of these.
And, if you plan on using a firearm, you'll definitely want to be wearing one of these (I gave my wife a set along with her other birthday present), 'cause you don't want to spoil those ears for all that good iPod listenin' just 'cause you deliverd the old double tap to some fool.

Double barrel Mossberg?
Next time you use that phrase, you'd better damned site have this link, or this link included. And for those of you wondering what to buy me for Christmas, go to the second link, and scroll down to the home security 410.
BTW, I don't see anything here with double barrels, unless you count this. Hmm... Wonder how that works.
