Direct Download-Day Links
The FTP links that have been posted DONT COUNT towards the download day stats.
The official links from download.mozilla.org are:
Win32 (exe):
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US
Linux (tar.bz2):
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=linux&lang=en-US
OS-X (dmg):
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=osx&lang=en-US
happy downloading :-) -
Re:Download
and if you, for example, want to download firefox 4.0, you should change the link like so: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-4.0&os=win&lang=en-US in this manner you can avoid the rush of people downloading 3.0 and the rush that will surely come with 4.0 as well.
-
should've been called Voluntary DDOS Day
I had to use the direct link http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US to download FF3. Otherwise I got "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." and "The server at www.spreadfirefox.com is taking too long to respond." from Mozilla http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/?from=getfirefox and Spread Fire Fox respectively.

It worked for me, but don't know if it will count towards the record. -
Release Day Schedule
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases/Firefox_3.0
Looks like they are running a bit behind. ;) -
Downloading from their FTP server won't count
Here's what mozilla is saying from their ftp server site: ftp://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/mac/index.html We're not quite ready yet! We're just as excited as you are for our upcoming release, but we're still putting the finishing touches on Firefox 3: preparing the new mozilla.com website, getting our severs ready for downloads, and doing our final pre-launch checks. You can follow our progress if you'd like! The files in this directory are - for now - only meant to be used by our testers. Downloading them directly can harm our ability to distribute Firefox efficiently, and will also not be counted as part of our attempt to set a Guiness World Record for the most software downloads in a day. If you'd like to be notifed the minute that we launch, please go to sign up for Download Day. Or just head over to getfirefox.com on Tuesday, June 17th after 10am PDT.

Re:Direct FTP Link to mirror

Direct FTP Link to mirror
This is the link to FTP site: ftp://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/ Not sure if downloading from here will contribute to the counter.

Hilarious!
The most fully Slashdotted sight ever! I can't get any http://mozilla.org/ sight to respond.
Quite humorous. -

Correction to the GPs postI would have modded you down as being inaccurate but doing so would mean that I couldn't correct the inaccuracy. So I'm passing up on the opportunity to mod you and am instead going to fix the mistake.
As of FireFox 3.0b3 browser.urlbar.richResults no longer works. The ability to chose your own search results style was removed by the Mozilla developers as part of bug #407836. They're illogical viewpoint is explained in bug #403159.
And, for the record, Oldbar does not fix the problem. It does not disable the searching style introduced by FF 3.0. It only makes the results look a little more like 2.0.
According to this article browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped no longer works either. The value of browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped is now ignored.
It's not the GP's fault either. Dozens of articles have been published in the past few months that have old, outdated information. Even Redhat put it in their Knowledgebase on 6/4. The sheer number of articles attempting to help people disable the "awesome bar" should make the developers realize that this is not a "feature" that everyone wants. I agree with the GP. I too HATE the awesome bar. It's a shame too because I would love to have the fixes for the memory leaks in FF 2.0 that don't exist but FF 3.0 addresses anyway.

This is what AdBlock plus reports about browser version compatibility at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4364:
> Works with:

Looks like you have what you asked for... -
Re:I hate the awesome bar
I hate the awesome bar too.
In the version of FF I'm running (3.0), I don't have a boolean browser.urlbar.richResults, I have a browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, which is an integer.
Here's a summary of what I've been able to figure out about how to get rid of the awesome bar:
- To revert to the old-style graphics, use the oldbar addon. This has no effect on the actual completion algorithm, just on the way the results are displayed.
- Set browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped to true. This is supposed to make it only match results that you've actually typed before. However, it will not stop it from matching titles of pages.
- Setting browser.urlbar.maxRichResults to 0 does not change it back to the old behavior. It just prevents results from being shown in a pop-up menu at all. Setting it to less than the default of 12 can, however, reduce the amount of screen space taken up by the menu.
- Setting browser.urlbar.matchBehavior to 2 makes the matching algorithm slightly more like the old one. It will only match things that lie at the beginning of a word boundary. This cuts down on the number of stupid matches, e.g., it will no longer match "ebay" with "thepiratebay."
What I really want is a way to make it search only on urls, not titles. When I type a url in the url bar, I have a url in mind. I don't want it to match titles.

Awful Bar
For those who aren't fans of the Awful Bar, there is an add-on to bring back the old bar.

Downloads already up, just not linked to on site

Submission ignored, download 3.0 now
Mozilla's FTP is overloaded, but the 3.0 (non-RC) download was available as early as 7am Mountain today. You can hit it from a mirror via: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US (change os=linux or os=osx if required).
-
Re:DownloadSince not all of us use windows and want their system in english, let's decompose that link a bit:
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US
You select your version with the GET variables. So, for other OS's:- Linux: change os=win to os=linux
- Mac: change os=win to os=osx

Oldbar
For those of us who don't like how the "awesomebar" looks by default, remember that the oldbar extension can save you from becoming insane.
-
Re:I hate the awesome bar
There's also the Oldbar extension.
Seems like the awesome bar is something that people either love or hate. Personally, I don't like it. I prefer my URL bar to do straight autocompletion, rather than search through my history and bookmarks for matches. I use the URL bar to type in URLs, and while the awesome bar adds some nifty functionality it breaks that basic feature. -
Re:And unofficially...
Or for OS X in U.S. English here: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=osx&lang=en-US

You can get it already: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US well, at least the windows, us-en version.

It should be available at 17:00 UTC today.

So it's Tuesday and I don't see firefox 3
Well, it's 10:20AM (2AM GMT) and firefox 3 still isn't available for download.
This link, however, exists: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US -
Re:Gender differences
Maybe it's not so much an issue of writing "better" code as it is an issue of having a sense of humor.
The problem with code is that people have to see code that works to take you seriously before they begin to "get" your sense of humor: the tactics / strategy things someone wrote of earlier. Many females have a difficult enough time being taken seriously and spend maybe a little more time than necessary on their comments; as the OP stated, crafting a "roadmap" of sorts can save a lot of time on any potential future iterations of code.
Example. I wrote what I thought was an extremely useful (but somewhat punny) "JavaScript Skeleton", intended to be nothing more than some semi-useful documentation regarding comments and formatting for JavaScript and comments RE JavaScript in HTML. I placed this "JavaScript Skeleton" in a section near the "JavaScript Shells" section of wiki documentation at http://developer.mozilla.org./ Lo and behold, some dolt void of humor proceeds to remove the contribution and to climb back on a high horse. I would have (should have) objected, but it would not have been worth the effort. Let idiots' actions speak for themselves.
Point. It IS possible to write documentation and to maintain a sense of humor. Documentation with a sense of humor might not be quite as bare-bones as possible, but at least it's not boring. However. It's sometimes just not possible to get others to see or understand a particular person's sense of humor. Something about funny bones and all that. . .

Re:Fear not...
FEBE is what works for me,and it does so much more than simple bookmarks. I can save my preferences, themes, passwords, extensions, search history, etc. I simply save it to a folder and keep it on my flash drive. And if you need access from anywhere simply make a password protected zip folder or self extracting password protected
.exe and email it to yourself. Then you have everything in an easy to use form without worrying about it being a security risk. But that is my 02c,YMMV -
Re:Delicious!
The extensions are what keeps me on Firefox, otherwise I would have went to the faster Kmeleon. And while we are recommending extensions,I'd like to add my vote for iMacros which I put up there with Adblock and Noscript as a "must have". Basically anything that you do repeatedly in a browser iMacros can automate it. Filling in forms, downloading files from a website, etc. And it is really simple to use: simply hit the record button and do what you would normally do,then press end and rename it something easy to remember. And it comes with a couple of dozen sample scripts that are really easy to customize for your own use. I highly recommend it!

Re:Bookmark sharing without using third party serv
Can you explain how you are sharing the places.sqlite file then ?
I've tried a symbolic link on Linux to the same file. The bookmarks are displayed but I cannot alter (add, delete, etc ) them.
Theres a bug here marked WONT FIX for setting a path to the places.sqlite file
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=385077
It seems like the people from Mozilla are suggesting use Mozilla Weave as an alternative. -
Delicious!
Never used google browser sync... but i can't use firefox without the delicious extension.
having one pool of bookmarks on the net, and then selection which group to show on each computer is just what everyone needs.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3615
And i'm using it with firefox 3 already. -
Re:Fear not...
Use Gmarks. It lets you export your Firefox-bookmarks to the Google-bookmarks and then access it through a Firefox-menu. Once you have exported your present Firefox-bookmarks, use this GMarks menu for adding new bookmarks or deleting old ones. It seems to be a better option than the Google-sync because Google provides you a web-interface also to access the stored bookmarks. It means, u can access it anywhere, even if you are not using Firefox.
-
Sync and Sort?
I've been using Bookmarks Sync and Sort for quite a while now - all you need is a FTP/WebDAV server on which you have an account, which I guess every slashdotter should have...
The extension does everything I need, and it works like a charm; the only problem is that is not (currently) FF3 compatible. -
Groowe toolbar is the best and it does Google!
Still no Google love for Firefox 3 but I found a cool addon toolbar name Groowe. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/534 it has all the known toolbar's in one and you can add more if needed. It has a drop down menu to change between toolbar's.

Re:I have firefox 3.0 beta
You might like this extension.
Unfortunately, not updated for 3.0, but it might work anyway if you force it, but I haven't tried it. -
Re:opera is faster
Minimo (based on the ff3 tree) is faster, supports more javascript, and has a smaller memory footprint than Opera does on my 400Mhz Nokia N800. Minimo runs flash better, too.
Firefox 3 is a tipping point. It is the point at which Opera's claim of greater speed is quite arguable if not entirely unfounded. Considering that speed and portability are essentially the only things that Opera has going for it, the latest version of Firefox may actually destroy Opera's market. -
Re:I'm waiting.
Many existing add-ons work fine with Firefox 3 but haven't been checked by their maintainers. Solution: override Firefox's compatibility check for that add-on.

Yes. Apparently it's especially annoying when you are demonstrating something to a client and they get to see all the websites you were exploring the night before...
You need to use private browsing. For Firefox, there are several extensions. I use distrust (although Safari's private browsing is actually much better than what FF extensions can do). -

Doesn't work for me eitherThat about:config setting didn't do anything for the shift+enter. I finally gave in an downloaded the URL suffix addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/443. Once its loaded, just select options for it from the Add-on list and delete all the entries. That will take care of it once and for all.
However, I'm still on the hunt for a simple about:config setting.

Re:ZoomStealther is your friend. Two clicks (Tools->Stealther) puts you in porn mode.
Is there a reverse of this? I am not so concerned with porn as I am with revealing to one client names of my other clients, etc (by virtue of browser history) - so it would be nice to have a quick toggle of turning all history completion options to off from time to time.

Too bad for those with GTK 2.8
Firefox 3 needs GTK 2.10+. Too bad for those of use with Enterprise distros such as SLED10 which has GTK 2.8 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=418885

Firefox has severe problems with IPv6
Firefox basically can't do SOCKS proxying and connect to IPv6 sites, even if you configure a SOCKS5 proxy which can handle IPv6.

Re:Addons
NoScript, Adblock Plus (w. Filterset.G) and FlashBlock are supported in the current 3.0pre Firefox, so they'll work in the final build. Checking Mozilla's addons website isn't that hard, really.
