Slashdot Mirror

Use the RequestPolicy addon in Firefox. It's a whitelist for allowing certain sites to load resources (of any kind) from other sites. If the pairing between the site you're on and another site is not explicitly added to RequestPolicy, nothing gets loaded (the request is not even made to begin with). It covers JS, CSS, images, anything.

IMO it's a more practical approach than NoScript, although not as ultra-secure.

In case you're wondering what's the difference between RequestPolicy and Ghostery:

• * Ghostery is a blacklist, not a whitelist (blocks only the things in the list, allows anything else). Blacklists are usually a bad idea in security.
• * With RequestPolicy you control the list, with Ghostery someone else does.
• * Ghostery has a lot of extra fluff, RP has only what's needed.

If you can't figure out your web site's font issue, how do you expect us to believe you can code a full-blown word processor?

If you ask me, this problem is a political problem, not just a technical one. At some point, you just have to be willing to let go of some of your Firefox users with weird fonts installed. It's not like LibreOffice can afford to rewrite Firefox from scratch.

This is not a problem with Firefox, SeaMonkey, or other Mozilla-based applications. They use a certificate database separate from Microsoft's, a database that does not contain the certificate used in the forgery.

The certification authority at fault (NIC) has an open request to have its root certificate added to Mozilla's database. I don't want to slag the Firefox devs too badly (hey, it's a free browser)

I wouldn't feel too bad about slagging them, they deserve it.

They've spent their development time screwing up the UI instead of working on a major 13 year old bug that's annoyed everyone since its release.

Unfortunately YouTube's 60fps support pokes a pretty big hole in the current state of Firefox.

To play back 60fps videos you need to be using the HTML5 player and stream the 1080p version. The Flash player will not work here.

The problem? Firefox doesn't support Media Source Extensions, which is what YouTube uses for DASH adaptive streaming. Mozilla's developers are working on the matter, but only for WebM for now. H.264/MP4 MSE support will have to wait.

The end result is that 1080p60 playback works great on Chrome, Safari, and even IE11, but is all but useless on Firefox.

I don't want to slag the Firefox devs too badly (hey, it's a free browser), but once again FOSS orthodoxy is getting in the way of practical feature development. H.264 support took an embarrassingly long time to come, and now Firefox is the only browser that that can't play back 1080p60 on YouTube.

Between this and their constant attempts to turn Firefox into a Chrome-alike, it's getting harder and harder to justify using Firefox.

Even more fun is installing native code plugins, which requires the root password. I went hunting in Chromium's code recently, trying to work out what locations it would load Google's Talk/Hangouts plugin from, in an attempt to trim the list of locations the plugin's files have to be symlinked to when installing it.

Whereas the "old" NPAPI plugins have a bunch of allowed locations, but usually /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins is common to most browsers suporting them and Firefox even appears to allow them to be in in your user profile at ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/plugins/ (MDN docs), the path to the PPAPI plugins directory is hard-coded in the source for Chrome browsers, to <directory-containing-chrome-binary>/pepper/ (/usr/lib/chromium-browser/pepper, /opt/google/chrome/pepper, etc), AND the filenames of the (very short) list of supported plugins is similarly hard-coded.

There appears to be a command-line option to load plugins from arbitrary locations for development, whether that would work to load a "released" plugin like Hangouts I couldn't say.
