Re:One Useful App
One problem you have with Mame is the fact that the ROMs take so much space. (My collection alone is over 7 CDs, and a friend's is larger than that)
Anyone know of the feasability of using this with the broadband adapter to hook into your network and pull ROMs from another machine? (just map the shares and let it rip)
Heck, for that matter how about being able to run an MP3 server like this by doing the same thing?
And when you add in the VCD player that's already available for the Dreamcast. All we need is a DIVX player and we're set.
(Now I wonder if all this would actually work?)

A few linksI was getting all geared up to build myself one of these almost 2 years ago, did some research, bought most of the parts, and then didn't have any time to actually build the thing. Ah well, such is life.
;-) For now, my custom perl script allowing me to instantly call up any of my 300 CDs worth of mp3s is good enough. Here are some useful links I found while doing my research:
- First, check a similar ask slashdot story
- MP3 Server Box
- An even older related slashdot story
- LCDAT - Linux Compressed Digital Audio Transport
- Linux Central has lots of LCD display modules that are perfect for this.
- Cajun Car Audio Jukebox
- Linux MP3 Players Project Page
- You already know about LIRC but here's the link for those who may not.

Do it yourself Linux TVI've been running my own doityourself Linux TV typing thing for a couple of months now. Photo's of the actual TV, click here (1) and here (2). The setup supports everything from basic text, mp3 playback, gnapster'ing all the way to fullscreen DVD viewing.
Hardware:
- Sony PAL TV with s-video and dual SCART input (G4xx supports both PAL and NTSC output)
- AMD Athlon 700
- Matrox G400 MAX (any G4xx dualhead will do)
- Hollywood+ / DXR3 MPEG decoder card
- Trident 4DWave NX
- Wireless SK7100 keyboard (full Linux support using 'hotkeys')
- Logitech wireless mouse (PS/2)
Software:
- Linux 2.4.0-XFS (80Gig *bloody fast*, journalled XFS data partition)
- Debian Woody (the best
:) - XFree 4.0.2 + Matrox mga.o binary with HAL
- WMaker 0.60.4, for proper Xinerama support
- aviplay + plaympeg for fullscreeen DivX
;-) / MPEG2 playback - AlsaPlayer for music *grin*
- ROX for cool desktop icons and File browsing
- Anything else that runs OK at 640x480 or 800x600
The TV..erh..Linux box automatically boots up in KDM so logging in is as simply as switching to the "X Win" channel and typing your user/login :) Unfortunately KDE2 (still) doesn't support Xinerama properly so running it on the TV-out screen :0.1 is tricky at best, impossible for newbies. The Trident NX card, using ALSA, is also hooked up to my Dolby Digital / DTS amp through the S/PDIF which gets me full 5.1 digital audio out.
Latest addition to the software list is MP3sb which catalogs all your MP3's and has provides you with multiple views of your colection. Konqueror displaying the PHP3 client. Anyway, lots of fun hacking this stuff...

mymusic/mp3sb + NFS?
There are two packages - mymusic is on freshmeat, and mp3 server box - that do something like what you are looking for. If you combine one of them with NFS mounts of the different machines' music directories, I think you'll have something close to what you need.
If that doesn't do the trick, I'm sure that minor tweaking of the code of either project should get you there. -
Real Men Do it themselves...Why not just take a P-90-133, install Linux or a BSD, and use one of the many cool mp3 server programs, like MP3SB?
Personaly, I just use a P-100, 24M ram, and a 20 Gig HDD for my mp3's... telnet, web, wap, ir, lcd - it suports them all, plus I can upgrade it anytime I want.
Why waste time hacking a comerical product when you can make your own for less?

Mp3Box better option
I would rather just fork out the extra money and build one of these

Re:remote control, etc
Check out The MP3 Server Box. I'm in the process now of creating one of these beasts. I remember them saying that you can pump the audio to another system if you wanted. I'm not sure about the searching capabilities of it since I haven't gotten it all working yet, (not a software problem, hardware I think) but they do supply you with a choice of different clients (php3, gnome, console, etc.). All that's need for the base system is a Linux box with a sound card. There are a couple of the beta testers for it that have used the software to make one of these for the car, with directions in French I think. There are plans, or something, for an LCD interface as well. This should take care of the music side of things. As for the rest...., can't help you there.

Build your ownMP3 Server Box can be used with an old PC. I'm doing this with a hacked iopener.
What's slick about MP3 Server Box is the number of ways you can control music playback, IR Remote, Command Line, multiple GUI clients, Windows clients, and my favorite the CGI client. Lets me control from any system w/browser on my home network.

Suggestion - MP3BOXI'm hacking one too(but am not part of the pilot 100). I've got Linux installed, beta USB ethernet going(though it locks up hard on occasion - waiting for 2.4.0 to be finished). I'm making mine into an MP3 player w/photo slide show for the screensaver.
I found MP3BOX which has a way-cool CGI interface so you can control the MP3 playback from any system on your network!

iopener hackThis sounds like what I'm doing with my iopener hacking, the last pieces I need arrived today
:-)I'm planning to hook it up to my stereo, have it networked with my other systems via a USB ethernet adapter, and running Linux. Using the CGI client for MP3 Server Box I'll even be able to control the music from any system in my house.
Since the system will be in the family room, I plan to have a photo-slide show running as the screen saver.
