ToddlerKeys. Great free app. Locks the keyboard, power buttons, drive eject buttons, whatever you want. -
Netbook + Toddler Keys
I have an Asus netbook that works pretty well for this situation. Cheap enough that I don't give a damn about it, really, and it's held up reasonably well to my 2 year old daughter. Install Toddler Keys http://tk.ms11.net/ so that she can bang away on the keys without it doing much of anything, and disable the "close lid = standby or hibernate" feature because that'll cause some hangups. After that, you're pretty much golden, and at least in my case my kid is more interested in the Skype session because she can move the whole computer whereever she wants and sit down to talk to Mommy.

Toddler Keys
Toddler Keys worked great for my kids. It locks down your machine (including CD ROM drives and power button) with a password which you can optionally display in one of the corners so adults don't have to remember what the password is. You then point it at a directory full of images and another directory of sounds. Every time a key is hit it displays a random image and plays a random sound. It's fun if you point it at family photos as you can see your toddler begin to recognize family and relatives.

Re:One thing that RIM is crippling
You can teach a TEN year old not to play with your phone, but a TWO year old isn't going to listen to your explanation about not playing with it to dial 911 by accident.
A phone is not a razor blade, grenade or flame thrower. I let my kids play with my phone (when locked), the remote, the mouse and keyboard on the computer (with Toddlerkeys enabled). They see their parents hitting buttons and doing things and they want to emulate us to some extent and see what the big deal is about and their curiosity should be encouraged. The problem here is entirely with RIM, any keypress which can accidentally happen just by shoving the phone in your pocket and dial 911 is not a feature, it's a bug. -

I would add, get a Lawyer, as in, have a Lawyer (anyway).

Re:Why not?Sure, the OS was a fancy DOS shell that sucked balls compared to any real OS if you were trying to develop software on it, but it made a damn good single-user home/gaming platform. If it weren't for the 137GB drive (not partition, drive) size limit and the 512MB RAM size limit, I'd run it today as my gaming rig.
An unofficial service pack for W98se addressed the 512MB limit (though to what extent I don't know). It was reported on /. way back when, and seemed to be pretty well recieved by most who installed it. But it was easier to Google its site itself than it was to find the old article.Dunno about the 137GB drive limit. I'd imagine I'd have multiple drives if it became an issue.

For dial up 98 users use SP 1.5
Look here for a nice custom patch. I just had to reinstall Windows for someone (not spyware, but just as dumb, they tried to install Win2k over Win98 with the disk scratched all to hell). I start with that, install the the free AVG and then Zone Alarm, Adaware, and spybot. I figure (hope) that'll keep the computer from comming right back to me.
Still, I wonder how long until Microsoft notices (and sues) this guy (whether what he's doing is legal or not won't matter to good 'ol MS). -

As I got a few moderator points (offtopic question: do anyone know why, since the beginning, I get all my moderator points in the week-ends and not on week days?) I was ready to moderate this topic, however, I could not find a mention to the downloadable file itself so I'll be burning karma instead.
A quick Google search provided me with http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html, which hosts several mirrors to the so-called service pack.

Re:The eternal question:
Of course you can trust him! The URL has the word "security" in it!
Actually that is just where the article is, the guy hosting the software is located here: http://exuberant.ms11.net/
No "secure" in the URL, so it can't be trusted! -

Yep, it's Windows 98, alright.
