Re:DIY still has the Over The Air channels..
There is a Hauppauge card that supports clear QAM as well as the Linux only pcHDTV card (with support right in MythTV).
I'm confused. Are you saying the card you are running does not support clear QAM or that ESPN-HD is encrypted? -
Re:Mine is bigger
Then what your friend wants is the "Import DVD" option on the same menu.

MythTV already runs on Mac OS X
The Myth front-end (the part used for viewing) already runs on the Mac. It's the back-end, the part with encodes video streams, that is not yet ported.

You could have it right now!
If you're looking to have this mythical convergence box you keep hearing so much about. Find out about current, less restrictive, alternatives.
Okay, you know us MythFans would get all foamy about that. -
Re:Mac mini
The HD in the mac mini just isn't good enough for mythbackend (max 80 gigs, 4200 RPM). I have an 80 gig partition dedicated to MythTV - its a little tight as is, I couldn't imagine fitting the OS and all my music in that little space, nevermind recording with half my normal disk write speed.
Myth frontend is available for OSX, and its quite cheap to build a backend linux system.

Re:WTF?
'Cause I think that the Mac Mini would be an excellent MythTV frontend. Of course, there are some binaries for OSX already, but they aren't optimized for HDTV yet. I have absolutely no idea, but perhaps linux development for this project would be ahead of the curve? (Would probably take someone with more knowledge than me to answer this one.

Re:PVR is...
A while ago there was a discussion speculating that Apple might buy TiVo.
I'm wondering if Apple really needs Tivo. Why can't they do what they usually do (BSD-Darwin, KHTML-Safari) which is to take some free software (MythTV, which already runs on OS X ) and make it really easy to use with all the Apple shine. Given that Myth is already such a polished product that would seem like a good idea to me. -
Re:Go for it!
Well you can run MythTV on OS X. Not sure about the hardware acceleration. Here's a good review

MythTV, hands down.
Having tried both, from my experience, MythTv offered far more plugins, far better configurability, and far better performance. It can be harder to set up for the novice. I suggest reading up at the wiki at http://mythtv.info before attempting an install, Or follow Jared's Fedora guide.
MediaPortal, last I tried it, was crashy and very slow (took 30+ seconds to even start up on my XP 2800!), and I couldn't get it wo work at all with software encoding.

Re:Locked in for updates
I've been putting together a MythTV box. I don't know the answers, but get involved in the mailing lists. (See the bottom of this page http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythInfo.)

Re:MythTV Frontend
There is a very functional MythTV frontend for OSX already.
Backend is another story but the frontend is working great. I think this would be great to sit underneath a Gamecube and just use a Bluetooth remote to operate it. Mmmmmm... -
Re:TiVo could simply change their software a bit..
The new MythTV 0.16 has this feature. Note the change log on this page http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/WhatsNew
New Recording Options Screen The advanced recording options screen has been given a much needed make over. The various Qt controls are gone and the dialog is now themeable. Recording options are now set using a list control. The options are grouped into categories and can be selected using the arrow keys and the SELECT button. For simple items such as the start early/end late options you can just use left/right to increment them. For list types such as the recording group selection you can scroll through the options with left/right or press SELECT to see a list of the items and select which one you want. Items that can be scrolled left or right have arrows pointing to the left and/or right. -
Re:MythTV and HDTV?
There's a fair amount of documentation over at mythtv.org, and even more extensive hardware specs (alot of which was written by your truly - please edit it if you disagree!) over at the Myth wiki hardware section http://mythtv.info/moin.cgi/HardWare.
I'm based in the UK so don't know much about HDTV, but IIRC the only HDTV card that'll work under Linux (and Linux only) is available from PCHDTV http://pchdtv.com/
