Re:FireflyWell 14 if you consider Serenity as 2 episodes, which Fox aired as 2 episodes. If there is a 15th episode, I don't know about it.
Check this out:
In the USA and Canada, starting on September 20, 2002, Fox broadcast the episodes on Fridays at 20:00 (except for the second hour of the pilot which was shown at 21:00). The order was 2-3, 6; 7-8, 4-5, 9; 10, 14, 1; with 11-13 still unaired.
The lucky English:
In the United Kingdom, starting on May 12, 2003, Sci-fi broadcast the episodes on Mondays at 21:00 (except for the first hour of the pilot which was shown at 20:00). The altered episodes of the first season were shown in the originally intended order.Source: NationMaster.com

Re:Amazing coincidences! The original version of these amazing coincidences was published in Scientific American. American educator Martin Gardner used to use his fictional alter ego, "Dr Joshua Irving Matrix", the World's Greatest Living Numerologist to poke fun at the credulous. In the quarter century that Gardner ran a Mathematical Games column in Scientific American he devoted each April column to a tongue in cheek report on some topic from the fringe of reason. Seventeen of those columns involved an interview or letter from his good friend Matrix.
Gardner's genius deserves more respect than to be misquoted anonymously.

Re:Now we know...First of all, thanks for being kind in your answer, it's worth the read and it's not a flame like some other answers to my topic.
It's also considerably easier to insulate against cold than it is against heat.
But wait a minute, isn't it the same problem ? When you need to cool the place you need to prevent cold air to go out. When you need heating you need to prevent cold air to go in, right ? I hardly see the difference. I'm ok that it's harder to cool than to heat but are you sure it's a so big difference ?
Look at that. Do you think the difference between heating and cooling does explain that ?
The US has to provide power to roughly 5x the number of people on roughly 20x the amount of land.
Yup, but there are some big spaces uninhabited like in Texas for instance. I'm looking for statistics about percentage of people living in cities because I think France has much more small villages isolated than US. I'll try to find that kind of statistics and post it.
Take a look at Russia, the Ukraine, China, India, or any other large, geographically diverse country. How much of it is wired?
Unlike USA, those countries can't really afford it...
France doesn't have to deal with a lot of the issues that the US does. Like ants that will happily chew through electrical insulation (fire ants in the SE US; between that and clay soil it makes burying cable extremely expensive)? No permafrost either. Tornados? Hurricanes? Nope.
I didn't know about the ants. I've read a book where the author explains that ants rule the world... BTW, we have some strong thunderstorm in France and some flooding too but our electricity grid uses redundant connections much more than the American power grid so it's rare that we have a problem.
But we have some of the cheapest power in the world, and the cost of power is a baseline for everything else in the economy. It's one of the key reasons that we have such a strong economy, and have had one since the advent of industrialization.
I agree on this but what's the point to have cheap power if it fails ? I mean I think you will have more and more problems in the future if you don't upgrade your power grid.

Re:Now we know...
Source? Proof? Let's move on to the next lie
Just for electricty: here. Do you want the numbers for the oil consumption too ? Because it's damn WORSE.
Neither do we. Mine does 22, and my wife's car does 35. I can't think of any SUV that gets 10 MPG, except maybe a Hummer but those are exceedingly rare. Next lie.
The Dodge Durango v8 of one of my colleague isn't doing more than 10 mpg. A typical European car do more than 40 mpg.
Could that be because the government takes more, and the average Frenchman works ~35 hours per week?
Absolutely our government takes a lot and we work less. That's the reason I'm in Florida: money, do you think I'm here because I like the country ? If so you are wrong and I'm not alone.
So stop wasting energy; buy energy efficient appliances, add more insulation, read by candlelight
I'm renting the place where I live and here the government doesn't help you financially when you want to make your home more energy efficient. In France it does.
Somehow I think that $60 difference (and probably more) is hidden in higher taxes. So what brings you to this American hellhole, zeux?
I never denied it. Once again, why do you think I'm here ? -
Kucinich was on top of First Energy
First Energy has been a major concern of Congressman Kucinich for a while now. There is a long standing feud between Kucinich and First Energy-at this point it looks like Dennis was right about these folks.

Re:Hard core?I didn't have to try very hard at all, I just had to remember that the US has about 5 times the population of the UK and click the "per capita" link.
Bugger. I pasted in the wrong link. This is the correct one. Using "per capita" goes without saying.
:-)No nation bashing, but you brought up how dangerous the US is. Certainly you don't mind if I point out how dangerous your country is?
Sure. But it's not relevant to my initial point to an western poster (most likely American) who assumed that Nigeria is an unsafe place, a thought likely based somewhat in racism and ignorance.
-
Re:Hard core?see that the UK leads the world in assaults and total crimes per capita
What's your point, caller? Did I say it were any safer here? Or, have we decended into the predictable nation bashing.
;-) Believe me, I live in Glasgow, I know how dodgy some places can be!! Like any country on the planet, you are fine if you know what areas to avoid.Oh, and yes, I am aware that you had to try several pages before you could find one to bash me on.
:-) The most obvious assault statistic on that site places the US as more dangerous. Funny that though, the UK is ahead in "assault victims", while the US leads "assaults". You gotta just love statistics. -
Re:Hard core?
That's a good one. You obviously didn't spend much time at the site you linked to, because if you did, you'd see that the UK leads the world in assaults and total crimes per capita.

Re:Just because their black, ...I thought maybe you were replying to someone's post saying that because these people were black, they were dumb. But no. Looks like you just put that out there yourself, and then refuted your own statement.
I see where he is coming from. There is a definite racist attidute in most replies on this topic, and I reckon your parent post was refering to that in general.
So far I've seen most posts hint to them all being stupid and thugs. Are the KKK active on Slashdot now? Ironic, given that the USA has some of the highest illeracy rates in the west, as well as being full of very dangerous people. Pot. Kettle. Black.
America is a racist country. It was built on racism. Get over it. Americans have been conditioned to hate the (in a roughly cronological order) Native Americans, Africans, Mexicans, Germans, Japanesse, French, Russians, Cuban's, Vietnamese, Arabs. In fact, anyone that isn't a white capitalist. Most of you aren't aware of this.
Appologies if this comes off as a troll, it's not. I just hate how most Americans are completely unaware of their racist tendancies. It's conditioned into you from an early age from many different sources.

Re:Hard core?they're thugs too. And hard core in Africa, even a (relatively) stable place like Nigeria does not equal to hard core in the US, believe me.
You make me laugh! Visiting the USA is far more dangerous. Or have you never seen the murder rates for the USA, one of the few western countries to make it into the top 25 most dangerous countries in the world?

Re:In the land of the indolent
And the UN has turned tail and run, clearly showing how interested they really are in long term results.
You mean: And the UN has told GWB to go stuff himself for having the temerity to ask for financial help [1] after blowing the off [2]. You're welcome.
What's happening in Afganistan? We dealt one of the world's major terrorist operations a critical if not fatal blow. We've freed the people who live there from a regime that killed people for such horrible transgressions as being a female teacher, and kept those same people from reasserting control.
Congratulations! You know what would have been even better? NOT DEPOSING A LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT IN ORDER TO PUT THIS MAJOR TERRORIST OPERATION IN POWER IN THE FIRST PLACE. [3]
What's happening in Iraq? ...(blah blah blah)... We're establishing a police force that's not controlled by a sadistic madman and his sons.
Congratulations! You know what would have been even better? NOT SELLING CHEMICAL AND CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS TO A SADISTIC MADMAN IN ORDER TO ALLOW HIM TO ESTABLISH A VIOLENT POLICE STATE IN THE FIRST PLACE. [3] [4]
For the first time in memory, Iraqi's are allowed demonstrations, private newspapers, and free speech.
Well, at least we have proof that you're an American: your memory only stretches so far back as American meddling in the Middle East.
Er, yes, because there was no terrorism before bad ol' America got involved. Just like there were no Nazis before Churchill got all worked up over that silly Poland thing and ruined peace in our time.
http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/g/Godwin_s_ La w.html
If we were all just nice to the terrorists and left them alone, why then they wouldn't have to hijack planes and ram them into buildings and burn thousands of innocent people to death with jet fuel.
Here's a better way to solve that problem -- don't play footsie with the Bin Laden family. [5]
Or blow up crowded night clubs.
Or blow up Federal Buildings in Oklahoma.
Or stage deliberate attacks the UN and Red Cross.
Or blow up life-critical civilian infrastructures in direct contravention to the Geneva Convention. [6]
Or detonate car bombs on streets filled with Iraqis trying their best to rebuild a society suffocated under decades of sadistic totalitarian rule.
Or overthrow a legitimate president and put a brutal dictator in his place in order to save 12 cents on copper.
If we had only left them alone then they'd have converted all their training camps into teddy bear factories and spent their time collecting butterflies instead of stoning women and blowing people up.

[2] Beat it, loser. You're past your "prime", and completely irrelevant. Oh, by the way, can I borrow a few billion dollars?
[3] Gee, I wonder why American foreign policy is looked down upon..
[4] Oh what tangled webs. What makes Americans think they can better the Brits at trying to tie puppet strings to the world? The Brits were the best in the business since the Romans, and they -still- failed.
[5] I'm going to do you a favour and prevent you from looking too stupid: Your first reaction faced with this link will be cognitive dissonance. Please consider the fact that this is a BBC news link before shouting the stock "conspiracy theory" rhetoric.

Re:At least China is better than AmericaWe have on of the highest literacy rates in the world.
Thanks. I had a good laugh at that!!
In fact, you have one of the lowest literacy rates in the western world. 65th to be exact, behind countries such as Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
You are probably forgetting the 12.1 million American children that live below the poverty line. But, that doesn't form your picture-postcard Fox news view of America, so forget about it. Ignorance is bliss.

Re:Ditch binary units
They didn't have RAM chips back in the "way back time". There were serial delay line memories and core planes. With magnetic core, the address was decoded to select a specific row and column in a set of core planes. Binary addressing wasn't universal. Some older equipment used decimal (BCD) for addresses and data. The IBM 1620 came with 20,000, 40,000, or 60,000 "digits" of core. It had a 5-digit address bus.

Re:UK has left-wing policies
(UK) Taxation isn't that high
No, taxation here's really quite reasonable. -
Economic Freedom map
As for your North Korea example, you seem to be getting things confused again. The number of truly non-capitalist countries in the world is very small, almost vanishingly so.
If you want to see just how free Africa is economically, look here.
It's pretty obvious that Africa mostly economically unfree. If you study the history of Africa, you'll find that most countries became socialist states during decolonialization in the 1960's.

Re:Or....
If you're concerned with overpopulation, there's plenty of countries with far higher growth rates. Take a look here for a list of projected popuation growth between 2000 and 2050.
You'll notice that African countries dominate the top part of list. The U.S. is right in the middle and I'd bet that much of that growth is due to immigration. The US may hit 500 million by 2060, but the rest of the world won't exactly be standing still. -
Re:software
"The DISTRIBUTION was legal, and they are still going to pay and be punished. Why is that?"
Because they can't prove it was legal, and as I posted above just a second ago (after you posted this... not implying you should already have seen it) there is likely a kind of presumed guilt here, as when you claim tax deductions but later can't provide any receipts.
"Finding stolen property is not illegal. Keeping it is though. Keeping it when you didn't know it was stolen, again, not illegal. Keeping it later when you find out, is illegal."
Well you obviously must return stolen property, because 'impoundment' is a pretty thorough remedy when we're talking about tangible goods! You can obviously reverse your loss by retrieving the goods. And again, with IP, 'Keeping it later when you find out' is not illegal, not until a court orders impoundment, which may not happen even in flagrant cases, because it depends on the effectiveness of impoundment as a remedy rather than on the obviousness of the crime. The only reference I can find so far is a bad one, here though it does contain a very good review the the topic so I guess that speaks in its favor. It states that "Possessing stolen physical goods is a criminal offense while mere possessing of goods which infringe on copyright is not." -
Re:2x10^7
You would be correct. See here. This site lists gun murder rates per capita... you'll notice Britain is right at the bottom of this list, while the United States is number eight (out of 32 nations listed).

Re:Come on.......
I find talk like that extremely insulting to Africans as it suggests they are not as "advanced" as Western civilizations and cannot control themselves when presented with military technology.
Some of us feel that Western civilizations cannot control themselves when presented with military technology. -
Re:From Brasil, too, but...
Rich and poor, very defined.
Not different from US, UK, Spain...
It is very different. Brazil has one worst income distributions in the world. Brazil is the 10th economy of the world, but what make us an undeveloped country is the wealth distribution where 10% of the richest have 50% of the country wealth.
