The Story of the Gold Farmer
The Deadalus Project has a massive update looking at Player Opinions of Gold Farmers. While farming activities are well documented, Mr. Yee opens up the dialogue about the topic by looking at player opinion in a larger context. From the piece: "Of course, the story of prejudice against the Chinese during the 1800s is far more complex and nuanced than stemming from just the laundry workers. And, of course, the parallel that I'm trying to draw isn't perfect. But the juxtaposition of this historical narrative with the much more recent narrative we typically tell about 'Chinese' gold farmers reveals its disturbing metaphors and framings. The contemporary narrative starts to feel too much like the historical one - Chinese immigrant workers being harassed and murdered by Westerners who feel they alone can arbitrate what constitutes acceptable labor." -
New Issue Of The Daedalus Project
Nick Yee writes "The Daedalus Project have new findings and a news survey. The Daedalus Project is an ongoing online survey study of MMORPG players that started 5 years ago and has surveyed over 35,000 players. Some highlights of this issue's findings: While the media likes to talk about how "virtual" relationships in MMOs are, about 80% of players actually play with someone they know in real life (a romantic partner, a family member, or a friend). PvP servers attract younger players as well as more men than PvE servers. This has implications for gender-bending rates. On PvP servers, female avatars are much more likely to be played by men. 22% of respondents said that they had purchased virtual gold. On average, these players have spent $135 USD on virtual gold. While older players are more likely to have done so, there were no gender differences." -

When MMOGs Ruled The Quickies
This summer it seems like Massive games are the only good news going, and this week has been busy. R. Spencer writes "1UP explores MMO addiction and, in true confessional style, opens the floor to heavy users and recovered junkies. It's especially interesting how much the mechanisms of MMO addiction have in common with other forms of addiction. The primary source of addiction nowadays seems to be World of Warcraft. If you're jonesing right now, you might want to check out this Guide to the Creation of the Scarlet Monastery on the official site. Additionally, Mogg writes "For new players, GamerGod has a up part one of a guide to the game World of Warcraft." This is Tobold's first writerly foray at the new site. Luck to him. For something a little different, 1up explores the world of Sociolotron...a Sex MMOG. Speaking of sex, SOE has been busy lately. The end to the Quest for Antonia search is almost here. They've put up new details on future EQ2 content, and announced a dramatic downsizing of The Matrix Online. See, when no one plays, you don't need as many servers. The new content mob is rearing his head all over with Secrets of the Syren in the works on Star Wars Galaxies, CoH Issue 5 coming up soon, and screenshots from the next Guild Wars update available. MMORPG.com continues to put out interesting editorials, with a look at the stories in Massive Games. Finally, the highly respectable Nick Yee has published a new edition of The Daedalus Project. The seminal source of MMOG statistics on the web has articles on participation in games at the level cap, introductions to the genre, and the stress of loot. As always, participation in the survey helps ensure future issues have good data. -

New Edition of the Daedalus Project
Nick Yee writes "The Daedalus Project is an ongoing survey study of MMORPG players. Over the past 5 years, more than 35,000 MMORPG players have participated in the study. A new issue is now available at the Daedalus Project site. Some highlights from the current issue include: About 26% of female players are introduced to the game by a romantic partner, compared with 1% of male players, An extensive interview with the leader of a top-ranked WoW guild (they just killed Ragnaros recently), and Narratives from players who play with their romantic partners, family members, friends and co-workers illustrating the good and bad things about playing with someone you know in real life." -

New Issue of the Daedalus Project
Nick Yee's seminal Daedalus Project has released a new issue. Topics covered in this release include MMORPG Hours vs. TV Hours, Transfers of Stereotypes into virtual worlds, and a look at the virtual police state. As always a new issue means a new round of tracking on the Daedalus Survey, so if you're a MMOGamer go answer some questions. From the Television article: "MMORPG gamers spend on average 21.0 hours per week playing the game (N = 1996), and spend on average 7.7 hours per week watching TV (N = 1996). The national average for TV watching per week is around 28, which is what the above averages add up to. In other words, this lends support to the claim that time that was spent watching TV has been displaced by MMORPG playing." Commentary on Terra Nova. -

New Daedalus Project Results Up
Thanks to TerraNova for the news that Nick Yee's Daedalus Project has new results and a new quiz available. This ongoing research project into Massively Multiplayer Gamers and their habits is probably the most comprehensive one out there. The new data is interesting as always. If you're interested, you can participate in the next portion of the survey. -

First Wave of Project Massive Study Complete
Project Massive, a Carnegie Mellon University study into the habits and tendencies of Massively Multiplayer Gamers, has completed research into their first wave of questions. The results are available on their site, and include some interesting observations (nearly 30% of players spend time in a MMOG to interact with real-life friends). If you're interested in participating, their second wave of questions is available. Similar projects include Nick Yee's The Daedalus Project, the TerraNova Blog, and Constance Steinkuehler's Selected Papers. Thanks to clampe for the submission. -
New MMO Survey Discusses Addiction, Perspective
Thanks to Terra Nova for its post pointing to new results from the 'Daedalus Project' MMO survey, since, "over the past 4 years, the study has surveyed over 30,000 MMORPG players." Some of the findings include MMO player's opinions on addiction ("About 40% of users would consider themselves addicted to the game. This percentage is quite striking given the social desirability bias built into the question"), and preferences for first or third-person MMO gameplay, with male players strikingly more likely to want third-person play (surveyor Nick Yee suggests: "In very broad strokes, female players are more drawn to relationship-oriented activities while male players are more drawn to achievement-oriented activities... goal-oriented users may be more likely to treat avatars as tools/pawns to achieve goals, thereby encouraging a preference for [third-person play] that objectifies and externalizes the avatar.") We've previously covered other Daedalus Project results. -

Gender-Bending In Online Games Investigated
Thanks to Terra Nova for their article discussing the prevalence of gender-bending in online RPGs. According to statistics worked out in the piece, "[in EverQuest], every 1 out of 2 or 3 female characters is being played by a male player, while every 1 out of 100 male characters is being played by a female player." The article also notes that, according to the statistics, "The demographic that is most likely to gender-bend is not male teenagers, but men over the age of 25", suggesting one reason for this might be that "younger male players are probably less secure about their own gender identity." -
On Interpersonal Compatibility In MMORPGs
Thanks to Terranova for their post discussing how MMORPG players are pre-selected for relationship compatibility. The post references a specific part of a larger survey on relationships in MMO titles that points out that "MMORPG is a highly specific kind of entertainment... [which] effectively attracts people with similar interests and attitudes", referencing stats such as: "MMORPG players who are employed tend to work in the IT industry (36% of employed EQ players.)" It also points out that these relationships evolve in a very different way: "People like to share personal details online and you only learn the mundane details when you meet them in real life." -

Quantification of EQ Players
Nick Yee writes: "As part of a psychology thesis project, I collected data from about 4000 individual EverQuest players who together filled out about 25,000 surveys that focused on many facets of personal and social dynamics in real-time 3D immersive virtual worlds, such as: gender differences, gender-bending, addiction, friendships, romantic relationships, people who play with romantic partners and so on. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. " -
