Re:Blizzard wants to finish it
Actually, they don't have the developers. The original development team of Starcraft:Ghost was a studio called Nihilistic Software, who still has it listed under their projects. Eventually, it was moved to another studio, and then the project was cancelled entirely.

Vampire: the Masquerade
I happen to know of at least one AAA game which used Java - it used it as a scripting engine.
Nihilistic's Vampire: the Masquerade - Redemption, back in 2000. As I recall, in the Gamasutra postmortem, they commented on how well it worked out for them.
Sadly, I don't know what JVM they were using - but they did say in the postmortem that they didn't write it themselves. -

Re:Story and gameplay vs visuals
Well, that's the exception, yeah. It smells like a quick cash-in to me. It's not even being developed by Blizzard, they farmed it out to Nihilistic Software. Here's hoping it turns out well, at any rate.

Re:Brand names
Interesting point, actually.
I think the game _could_ be interesting because it's developed by Nihilistic, who did the pretty decent Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, and are mainly ex-LucasArts people from the tail-end of the 'good' era (Jedi Knight, etc.) Also, Blizzard tend to be decent about quality control (they cancelled Warcraft Adventures when it wasn't up to scratch.) But.. a license does not a game make, and we'll have to see how this stacks up. -
Re:Obligatory
Blizzard is NOT developing Starcraft:Ghost. Don't confuse this. They are simply the publisher. The good people at Nihilistic are developing it as a third party. Though, given the quality of Nihilistic's last game, Vampire, I'm sure Starcraft:Ghost will rock.

Re:The last time
The last time Blizzard tried to make something with another group of developers, it turned out to be such crap that they canned it...
Don't worry. Nihilistic are a class act.
