Re:Doomed to repeat history?
Feature-wise the original N-Gage gave an absurd amount of bang for the buck, but the games were missing and it competed against the GameBoy Advance that was half the price and had lots more games. I think adding a phone to a game system with the kind of game industry backup Nintendo has is far more likely to be successful than a phone maker attempting to make a phone into a GameBoy.
An "entertainment" version of the Communicator, with games, decent movie and mp3 playback, might be a better option for Nokia. -
Re:That could be the case, but ....
I've got a Nokia 1100. It cost about 60, well over six months ago.
In real-world terms, the battery still lasts well over a week (even in marginal reception areas like where I lived in Britain) and gives far too many hours of talk-time for my needs. The predictive text thing works quickly and efficiently (and the default dictionary isn't filled with txt-spk crap), and it's generally cheap and cheerful.
No, it doesn't have a camera (I've got an EOS 350D with chunky lenses for that ;-) ), it doesn't surf the interweb (MacBook Pro, anyone?) and its most advanced feature is an LED flashlight which switches on when the 'C' button is held down.
I really like the user interface on it, and it's probably the best phone I've had so far. Despite being given heaps of apparently vastly superior hand-me-downs by family members. It seems to be working on outliving their new phones, too... -

Something like Nokia 7710?
Sorry, it's in finnish, but at least you see the pic: http://www.nokia.fi/puhelimet/puhelinmallit/7710/
And yes, there is a proto-chip to get it to tune in TV too. -
Re:Just one question:
"Is there anything wrong with a cell phone that's just a phone? All I want to do is make calls."
For fuck's sake, when will these trolls not be modded up anymore? If you want to make calls only, then get a simple phone, retard. And no, I refuse to be civil towards these posters anymore. Their arguments are refuted every single time, and they keep being modded up.
You are no better than the idiot teenagers who think stupid ringtones are the shit. You're just at the other end of the spectrum. You're trying to sound cool by putting down something you don't understand. Luddites of the worst kind. What the hell are you doing on slashdot?
Now that I'm done ranting, I'd just like to note that I, for one, *would* like a phone that can do SSH, thank you very much.

Re:Alternative music licensing/Music + TechnologyBy the same token, some phones are "Java-enabled", but does that mean you can write your own apps? Hardly.
I have actually written several small apps for my phone, a Nokia 7610, mostly just to see if I could. And according to the info at Forum Nokia it seems to be possible to also write apps for the phone in C++...

Re:Just One More Reason
How about you take a look at the models that are already on the market? Nokia has lots of simple models (model numbers in the 1xxx or 2xxx range). And besides, over here in Europe, most people want advanced features. So quit whining.

It gets even "better"
Nokia has announced a remote camera which operates in GSM network (page in Finnish) which should be available in Q2-2003.
This acts just like ordinary web-cam, but it transfers images to your email (via GPRS) or to your MMS enabled phone. It can be programmed to take images when it detects motion, or between specified intervals. It has even one-way voice communication which allows you to listen what camera is hearing.
This will be a scary tool for stalkers :) -
SMS fanatics
Even though I never quite understood why my fellow Germans write so many messages on their teeny-weenie pieces of Finnish or German ingeniouity (or just plain Taiwanese ingeniouty, if you're gonna be nit-picky), they will have to love this. I've seen cell phones that no longer had writing on their buttons because they'd been pressed so much in the process of writing important messages like "I was just thinking about you" or "I'll be running 3 minutes late" and the like.

Helsinki, Finland (Linus' U, Nokia)What we lack in telecomms competition here, we make back by having a population extremely advanced in technical things and English language.

I could talk about University of Helsinki's CS dep. as well, but I won't. It seems that the Technical University would be a better place for studies.
Whatever is said of Stockholm, Oslo or Copenhagen, also applies to Helsinki - except for difficulty of the local language, which you don't have to learn if you stay just one year or so, since everybody really talks some english, most people fluently.
Want more of an experience? Choose Reykjavik, Iceland. That's where I'm going to go one of these days.
