Re:Kazaa vs. eDonkey
If you have a *nix box (even an apple if it's OS X) you can use mldonkey which is a very nice client. You can operate it remotely from another box, it uses both edonkey and overnet protocols simultaneously, it's partially open source (there is a key component kept secret for security reasons, the one flaw in thes protocols is that they require trusted clients unfortunately) and it really gives you the best of edonkey and overnet both, as well as supporting the move to overnet since anything you're downloading from edonkey or sharing out will also be shared to overnet.

OT: VMware alternative
There is BOCHS, but it emulates every x86 instruction, rather than being optimized for specifically running an OS. The developers (in the FAQ) do not recommended for the purpose you intend. I have not tried it.
Plex86 touts itself as *the* free (as in speech and beer) alternative. I have not tried this either.
Connectix makes Virtual PC, which is not free. I have not tried it. -
Re:You don't need root Plex86 is here now.Plex 86 is locate here now - http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/plex86
Old site is down....
RvnPhnx - 2002-Oct-06 22:30 - 0 messages
The old plex86 web site is no more. I was wondering how long it would take for them to take it down, but it is now--the wondering is over. In any case, this is where the work happens--so be it. I have the old cvs still, in case anybody wants to play with it. I may get it posted here, and then branched/modularized, etc.--but the development is going to focus more on the plex86-release stuff for now. -
Re:Peng great idea, shitty execution
Well, it's true that peng is not really easy to compile/install.
Official owner of peng do not continue to maintain it, that's why a new project called pengfork started on savannah:Pengfork on savannah
It's only available with CVS and is not fully stable and finished. It's still under heavy development but you will find a configure script ;)
Pengfork team also continue to maintain peng code to resolve important issue when we see one cause peng is more stable.
I'm a developer of pengfork so I'm really concerned with the Arent Fox issue. What cause us fear is not the fact they ask us to stop use the domain pengaol.org this seems to be legitimate even if I don't like the method used...
Points I fully disagree are:
1)"You are also distributing software products that interacts and/or interfere with our client's proprietary software"
We do not interact/interfere with the AOL interface if this is what they mean...
2)"AOL still is considering the propriety of your software and reserves all its rights to object to those products"
humm... what means propriety? if they mean we don't show unwanted ads they're right...
3)"Your commercial use of our client's AOL mark"
What commercial use!!!! We didn't ever earn a cent for the use of peng nor AOL software.
Furthermore you will not find any link nor sentence that could induce AOL's customers in error. Peng is not an official AOL client and don't claim it by any way. -
Consider Debian-sourceforge version
I think sourceforge could help you out a lot. Stay away from the alexandria project, it was not a very good public project when it was active and has been in active for about a year now, use the debian-sourceforge packages hosted on savanna:
This project is a _working_ easy to install sourceforge system based on the last known public sources before VA pulled it in and made it proprietary again.
The two main authors (lo-lan-do and cbayle) have done an outstanding job fixing bugs and hard coded stuff VA left in there (which I think they did on purpose to make it hard to install so you had to pay them their USD100k to install it for you basically) and getting a nearly fully functional system that is accessible to all.
I like sf as a development management system very much, even though the public version they left out there is far from perfect, with several features missing that I think are close to essential for a dev mgt system, but overall I am more than willing to live without them for the rest of the features of sf and its easy to use interface for end users.
If you don't know the nightmare of installing the old 2.0 or 2.5 version then you will not appreciate fully the work of these two folks to bring sf to the average user. My thanks to them and I encourage anyone who might make use of their packages to contribute back to them in some way to say thank you.

Re:You guys are phonies
Hmm, Mozilla doesn't like it.
I have been playing with MLDonkey, an EDonkey implementation on Linux. It is controlled using a web interface, I can access my home machine from work, to run searches and start downloads.
The homepage is here:

Don't use Kazaa, try Edonkey
I think Kazaa will die like Napster or AudioGalaxy did. Don't use Kazaa. Please try edonkey2000 network. It's free, it's available not only for Windows, and you don't need to watch any commercials.
official (closed source) client: edonkey2000
free (GPL) client: mldonkey
free, Windows-only client: emule
