Re:Pepperidge Farm Remembers
For entertainment value, here's the Nvidia driver download page from 2001, with the driver weighing in at 6Mb.
Compare with 15 years later, driver is now 300Mb....
Software bloat at it's finest.
Even more entertainment value: https://sourceforge.net/projec.... The libraries that get linked in/to are much larger now as well.

Re:Disable Java == Broken Websites
I haven't seen a non-work related website requiring actual Java in years.
KeepVid (download youtube videos)
Granted they aren't super common sites to visit, but people would enable Java applets there (if they can -- apparently chrome can't) to use them.

Re:Umm...
Recent GPUs have hundreds of relatively simple cores. As you can see here.

Re:Tip for Terry
Existence of a free and open source openCL renderer of professional quality would force closed source developers to develop GPU based renderers as well or lose customers.
Like this ? http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/gelato.html
Don't kid yourself, true professionals use the professional/closed source solution
Don't get me wrong, Blender kicks ass (while has its warts) but it's far (albeit not very) from 3DS/Maya/Cinema 4D

Re:SLI: Sorely Lacking IMO
From the nvidia driver download page for their latest driver release:
*Note: The following SLI features are only supported on Windows Vista and Windows 7: Quad SLI technology using GeForce GTX 590, GeForce 9800 GX2 or GeForce GTX 295, 3-way SLI technology, Hybrid SLI, and SLI multi-monitor support.
I've tried every possible configuration available, it does not work. But thanks for your helpful and informative post, which yet again fails to invalidate my experience by way of your (highly questionable and completely unsubstantiated) claims.

64 bit drivers from nVidia

Re:you're all confused
No it's not, it's a graphics card. Most people buying them will be doing it for realtime rendering. Something like volume rendering can use boatloads of memory. Certainly we were using 1Gbyte of texture memory in 2000 on SGI machines.
If you want a 'science processor' you should be thinking about a Tesla http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/tesla_c1060_uk.html.

Re:pointless
Here are pics from the Counter Strike Masters competition from 2004. I wouldn't exactly call them fat ass IRC chicks.

Re:Worldy Wisdom
Secondly, this software isn't designed for joe schmo, its designed for professional applications.
"The Celestia program has broad appeal--from second graders all the way up to NASA scientists and engineers. By driving high-performance imagery from high-end servers onto commodity hardware, NVIDIA also brings this capability into every classroom and home. Celestia is a fantastic programming achievement--it gives everyone a window into our universe."

Re:Shoryukens and wedding bells
The dark haired girl with the red lips is doable, but calling these girls "hot" is kind of a stretch. A big fugly, if you ask me. So they have breasts and aren't fat. That doesn't makeup for having a freakish face or looking like you tripped and fell head-first on a pile of bricks.
The dark haired girl gets a 7/10 but the rest get a 6/10.

Re:What would be a great "desktop focus"
Oh the irony... my fortune at the bottom of the page is "This sentence no verb."
Anyway, what I meant to say was that the 5336 drivers for ia36 were released yesterday.
Might as well chuck in a link while I'm at it. -
