I was too young to remember the 1961 season, but soon after I became aware of baseball and even then "everybody knew" about the asterisk. I see this NY Times obituary, but I wouldn't say it's a convincer. There's Billy Crystal's movie 61*, and he'd remember better than I, and presumably he did some research, but I'm not going to watch it again just so I can see what it says.
It's too bad the Wikipedia article doesn't cite a reference for the "urban legend" statement. But considering how, uh, fanatical baseball fans can be, the fact that it is still in the article, unchallenged, must mean something.

See, I think the quote you quoted really doesn't sum up the article at all, or at least, it's very misleading. The article doesn't say that streaks of 56 games are a common occurrence. What it says is that the fact that baseball history has a record of a 56 game hitting streak isn't that rare, given players historical batting averages.
Think of it this way. I flip a coin 10 million times and find the longest streak of heads. Say it's 50 (I have no idea how likely that is and i'm too lazy to actually simulate it, so i'm just going to make up numbers). I flip another 10 million coins, and find that the longest streak is 53. I flip another 10 million coins and find the longest streak is 40. I do this another 10,000 times and record the record in each case, and get a distribution for the longest streak in any given 10 million flips. Now, i'm not going to claim that 50 heads in a row isn't an extremely rare streak. But i can say what the odds are of getting a streak of at least 50 heads when i flip 10 million coins are.
That's what these researchers did. Simulated 10,000 seasons from 1871-2005 (using players historical batting averages as their likelihood to get a hit) and found what the longest hitting streak in each 'alternate history' is. Their claim is that 56 games is not an unusually high number (in fact It looks to be right about the median.) So sure, DiMaggio's streak was great, and incredibly rare. But it's interesting to see what the odds are of having a hitting streak that long.

Actually, its the two 2% paying 53% (which is also in the cite I provided). But close enough.
The trouble however, is that a middle class american pays 30-35% in taxes, while a high-income american pays, on average only 18%.
So sure, if you make 146M bucks, yeah, your paying $26M in taxes. But if you take 1460 families that each make $100,000, that's the same 146 million in aggregate, but they each pay ~33k in taxes on average,... or 48M in aggregate.
Why do they pay 48M when you only pay 26M?
The high-income earners have considerable income from 'investments' not just 'wage/salary' which is taxed differently and wage income has far fewer loopholes and options than investment income, and there are countless more ways to leverage your money too the more you've got to shuffle around to maximize tax savings.
They're more likely to be 'self employed' at least with respect to some investment or other and suddenly that trip to the bahamas is a tax deductible 'annual meeting' instead of a 'vacation', and the twice yearly jaunts to Mexico? Tax deductable trips to inspect their investment rental properties....
Their car? Tax deductible lease payments, maintenance, and fuel... Their mortgage? Bah, who are we kidding they don't have a mortgage, but they do have a HELOC to buy even more investments, and the interest on the HELOC? Because its being used to buy goverment approved investments...you guessed it... tax deductible. The tax savings more than offset the interest, meanwhile the investments themselves can make money too.
The wealthy pay more taxes than the middle in total, but its the ones in the middle who see the largest chunk of each dollar bitten off by the IRS never to be seen again. -

Re:WTF?Walter L. Wagner does not have a PhD in any science related field. He does have a JD from an unaccredited law school in California. He was rebuked in 2003 for acting as his daughter's lawyer when he is not licensed[1] in Hawaii. He was indicted[2] in February 2008 on first-degree identity theft and attempted first-degree theft from a commercial botanical garden he founded.
From the NY Times article[3]: Mr. Sancho, who describes himself as an author and researcher on time theory, lives in Spain, probably in Barcelona, Mr. Wagner said. Since Mr. Wanger is acting as his own attorney, it is odd he does not know where the other plaintliff lives.
Wagner calls himself a nuclear physicist when he clearly is no such thing. I am assuming he went to the unaccredited law school because it was cheaper and easier to get the JD, especially if you have no intention of taking the bar. It looks professional on your resume and you can call yourself doctor.

Finally, of course there is nothing stopping the development of additional nuclear plants in America today. Conservative proposals to spend billions in assisting the construction of these plants or putting the federal government on the hook for insuring these plants seems a poor investment of our money that would be better served exploring renewable alternatives.
Looks like rationalizing, to be honest. The government is "on the hook" for insuring (that's with an i, as in "providing funds in the case of failure) accidents that just won't happen, and even if they did happen, no court would rationally and proportionally assess damages. You can insure "$1 trillion". You cannot insure "how much you got?", which is what nuclear accident lawsuit damage awards amount to.
In buying a car, you don't expect people to insure unlimited damage, why a nuclear plant? And why would I buy an insurance policy that covers $300,000 if simply getting it, causes me to be $300,000 *more* liable?
Nuclear power obviates most of environmentalists claimed justifications, so they have to work overtime to say why we can't do it. In fact, as I've noted before, a federal lab has the details worked for "nuclear powered octane". That is, take water, atomspheric CO2, and energy from nuclear reactions, and store the energy in gasoline (basically equivalent to reversing combustion, though not necessarily through that process). THen, with no infrastructrual changes, cars are carbon-neutral.

Apparently US legal system is a bit messy. Eventhough the federal government has to obey the treaties, according to the supreme court, States do not have to obey all treaties.
Not justifying the US actions here, but occasionally foreign courts refuse to obey US courts - I agree that disobeying US court orders (whose opinions are valid through bilateral treaties) is slightly different from WTO obligations, but I think in general we can safely say that international law is not always smooth -

In the U.S., road thickness is not more than 16" and that is only in the best of conditions. Maintenance of the autobahn is also much more rigorous compared to U.S. roads. Living in PA, I can attest to the poor state of our roads that we regularly are rated last or next to last in the nation.
In addition, when driving on the autobahn, you are driving the car. Not sipping your coffee, eating a burger or talking on the phone. You're driving. As the story goes, German car designers couldn't understand why people in the U.S. were asking for cupholders in their cars.

Apple purchased the right (with a large amount of stock) to look over Xerox Parc's work, hire some of their developers and then reverse engineer the GUI they saw there. So yeah, they did build on what went before but they paid for the privilege. And the way Apple stock went up back in the 80's, Xerox did pretty well. But apparently Xerox didn't agree because they sued Apple in 1989 for $150 million. One thing they got wrong is that when they saw Xerox's GUI, they thought they saw windows tiled over each other. Apple then had it's engineers go and figure out how this was done when Xerox actually didn't have that happening. Sounds interesting, but the Xerox Star (introduced in 1981) did have windows tiled over each other. Apple's Lisa wasn't introduced until 1983. Apple also came up with the idea of icons representing verbs or actions as opposed to just representing objects or data files. Yeah, that sounds so impressive compared with Xerox coming up with the idea of ICONS.
Apple did a great job building on Xerox's innovations, but the revisionist history of Apple fanatics is pretty funny.

I have a brother-in-law who's a middle-ranked professional musician; don't know how many CDs he's got out there, but he has multiple gold records, so it's in the millions. I don't pry into his finances, but if he had earned $1.60 a CD, he'd be living a lot more comfortably than he is, and he wouldn't have to do so much session work. -

About the casualties(drifting slightly off-topic) I think the most alarming are the psychological effects.
There may be 4000 soldiers dead, but those returning home after an utterly meaningless time spent in a country thousands of miles away, are the ones tearing my heart apart. It is one thing to lose a limb or an eye. That is terrible, but at least you can try to move on with your life. But to have your body whole and yet be wandering like a madman (or literally as a madman) with a gun at night, in the streets of your home town, because some ABSOLUTE MORON decided to send you to war with a secular country that had nothing whatsoever to do with us.. I think that is the saddest thing in the world. My heart goes out to all the people we killed, and all the soldiers we lost, and all the money that could have saved millions and done miracles in supporting science and human welfare. War is such a bitch. -

Road tax is a separate issue, people who use the road pay the tax to maintain it. Even if it is Amish, if they pose danger to the public, we have the right to restrict them. But in principle, we do have the right to tax them for the road, for their property and even to collect school taxes for the county, even they don't send their children to the county schools. We the government protect their property from intruders and provide for a non violent conflict resolution mechanism. Without our protection, those peaceful Amish would have been eaten alive. So we have the right to tax them. But usually we don't because it is so unfair to tax such peaceful people.
The original poster is making the point that it is one's inherent right to use the roads as long as he is not engaging in commerce, and he does not need any license, he need not obey any fitness-for-the-road criteria etc etc. Such claims are unreasonable.
You can argue, the license is just to make sure the driver is competent and it should not be used for the identification of individuals etc. Or you can argue a particular requirement does not improve the safety of the road use. Or any such arguments on specifics of the law. And use democratic ways to elect people to change the law. But to make a blanket statement, anyone can drive a motor vehicle on any public road without license as long as he/she does not do it commercially is complete idiocy. It is not reasonable, ethical, moral, libertarian or legal.
First concern I have is my safety. Second is fair use of all people to use the roads. Third is the court deciding whether rights claimed by the individual are really his rights. Anyone who calls the judge a traitor, is not going to have my sympathy.

All serious human rights organizations have found the shambles of Guantanamo as one of the most egregious violations of human rights by a liberal democracy (of course if you compare this with other countries, like your allies Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, then you are doing fine).
The Bush administration has broken pretty much any moral and legal precedence by setting up this concentration camp (honestly, I can't think of a better description) and as an aside, has created precedence that even US citizens can be denied funddamental rights if the terrorism word is involved in there somewhere.

When compared with a defense budget of $480 billion and $140 billion more for the war on terror, I'm not entirely sure earmarks are the most pressing case of fiscal irresponsibility. For the 2008 budget, they comprised only $17 billion out of $2.9 trillion. As far as the present discussion goes, it's worth considering that it is McCain who is most adamant about keeping us in Iraq, a war which has cost half a trillion dollars already, and an estimated $3 trillion before it's all done.
I do sometimes wonder how we're going to pay for all of this...

The taliban wasn't even an organization until 1994 or so, well after the soviets bailed out and we stop our support of the mujahadeem.
