Re:Motivation to invest in this sort of advertisin
Come on, wouldn't you want to click on a link that says "Even Monkeys Fall From Trees"
I think the runner up (for me at least) is "Don't Click"
because the alt text says: Fine, if you really must click, go ahead...
P.S. I found Waldo in the pic too

Opera / SSH UMD for Sony PSP ?
Jon,
It's been mentioned in the Opera forums that if there were sufficient interest, Opera might look into doing a browser for the PSP. I would be delighted to plunk down $30 for an Opera + OpenSSH for the PSP on UMD that would play on older PSP firmware. How many users will make it worth your while?
-
Already beat to it.
Look! It's another example of Microsoft innovating.

Re:Implication
Wow, Firefox is so innovative!
Sorry, but this is far from a "good implementation". First off, it's an extension, so there are probably going to be next to no new BT users that wouldn't have been able to use another client anyway.
Second, the implementation you are talking about, which could hopefully introduce more widespread (legal) use of BitTorrent to conserve bandwidth, is Opera's integration of a BitTorrent client back in July.
Anyway, judging by the screenshots (coralcached), this is really not that similar to a regular BitTorrent client anyway. It actually seems more like a FastTrack client to me, what with the friends and the browsing shared lists and stuff.. perhaps BitTorrent is just chucked in there as an add-on? In any event, I don't see it being any better than Opera's BT (which is not very good/configurable).
One of the main problems that people need to get over to get BT to work well is connectability. I would say most people these days are unconnectable when they first start using BT (behind a firewall/NAT and can't accept incoming connections) and this is a big barrier to BT becoming something that anyone can use.

Coral Cache Improvement
Here's an idea for the Coral team: what about converting to Coral all links in a coralized web page?
I think it would improve greatly the effiency of the cache system.

Re:avoid slashdot effect?
Speaking of the
/. effect, I can't get to the Allpeers link in the story but the Coral link is definitely working! The Coral FireFox extension rocks! -
Re:Free?
Actually, it doesn't sound like a BitTorrent client at all. It sounds kinda like AIMster if you remember that thing. You add buddies from some network to the sidebar and you can trade files with each other through that sidebar.
It says "the power of BitTorrent" it says nothing about actually implementing the BitTorrent protocol. It sort of sounds like a "friends only" file trading network. However, since it doesn't actually exist yet, and the screenshots look faked (specifically this screenshot, the UI in the window is the Windows XP "Silver" color scheme, while the rest is using the default "Blue" color scheme), I'm not really all that impressed yet.
Although my personal favorite claim on that site is "Share your videos without uploading" - um, right...
My bet is that this is just Yet Another Proprietary File Sharing App - "free" as in "free beer" like you expect, but not as in free software.
If anyone wants an actual BitTorrent extension for Firefox, I'm in the middle of writing one. It's not complete yet (that pesky "downloading" bit is incomplete) but it'll be GPLed. (It looks like I should actually be able to implement the entire thing in JavaScript, meaning it'll be crossplatform without requiring native binaries. Although perhaps a bit slower than if native - but the magic of XPCOM mean that theoretically I can do both.)

y /12-05/12-24-05/a01lo719.htm/ [nyud.net] -
Here's a really good foot in mouth story...
Once upon a time a student writing a paper on Communism for a class on fascism and totalitarianism told his professor that he had been visited by agents of Homeland Security because he had placed a request for Chairman Mao's Little Red Book through the inter-library loan program.
Agents' visit chills UMass Dartmouth senior
http://www.southcoasttoday.com.nyud.net:8090/daily /12-05/12-17-05/a09lo650.htm
There's just one little thing the student didn't count on...
Sometimes professors do not take things at face value, sometimes they actually do some research and they check things, they ask questions, and sometimes they notice inconsistencies.
They're smart like that. They really are. That's why professors are professors and why students are students, and why small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri are small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. But I digress...
Anyhow, to make a long story short, this student's professor asked some questions. This student's professor noticed some inconsistencies in the student's story. This student's professor asked the student's parents some questions. This student's professor found more inconsistencies in the student's story. This student's professor did even more checking.
In the end this student's professor found that not a single thing that the student had told him could be verified. The professor confronted his student who tearfully admitted that the story of being visited by agents of Homeland Security was a complete fabrication.
Federal agent's visit was a hoax
http://www.southcoasttoday.com.nyud.net:8090/daily /12-05/12-24-05/a01lo719.htm
This student's cobbled up story which had caused news articles and editorials to be written, which had caused much heated discussion on the Internet, in the end was unravelled and shot to pieces because the student's professor had not taken it at face value and had asked questions until he got at the truth of the matter.
Now, you may ask, who put their foot in their mouth in this story? Well, I'll tell you. Many people on the discussion board where you now read this very post put their feet in their mouths by spewing intemperate comments as a result of uncritically accepting the statements of a liar as the truth. I'd say that's a pretty good foot in the mouth story and a pretty good cautionary tale as well. -

Provide false and misleading information?
You mean like telling your professor how Homeland Security visited you because you tried to get Chairman Mao's Little Red Book via inter-library loan?
Then being exposed as a liar because you could not resist embellishing the story and some professor did some fact checking? -

BTW- If something is illegal for export, that means the only people who will get in trouble are the exporters, not the people 'illegally' obtaining software.
Hell, if it's illegal to export something, is there any reason to buy it? If you don't do business in/with the U.S or Canada, what is the gov't/company going to do if you pirate unexportable software? Sue you for violating their copyright? -
Re:What did NeXT use?
It had its propietary graphics system, not based on X11. It used Display Postscript as its backend rendering system, somewhat similar as how MacOS X uses the PDF engine and is OpenGL based.
I have an old BYTE magazine dating back from 1988, in which they reviewed the NeXT as the 'Computer for the Nineties'. It has a very thoroughful technical review and on it you can surely appreciate how ahead of its time was the NeXT, when comparing it with other reviews and ads on the same magazine. I have scanned the article and uploaded it here (using Coral Cache to avoid getting my server hammered too hard) and you can check out the page detailing the use of the Display PostScript system right here.

Re:AdBlock
It might be better to use a regex like
/[\W_]m?ad([sz]|v(ert(i[sz]e(ment)?)?[sz]?[\W_]/ (remove spaces if they exist). The key to making good filters is using [\W_] to delimit simple words like "banner", "ad", etc. In fact, I've got an extensive filter list available that I've been using and working with for over a year. That filter is synced with the Filterset.G lists every once in a while, so you get that along with ones I've added. -

Re:evolution VS. God
it is possible that these two ideas don't have to be mutualy exclusive?
http://www.envoymagazine.com.nyud.net:8090/backiss ues/1.2/marapril_story1.html
From the link:
"A few years ago, a Catholic friend of mine visited a dying relative in the hospital. The old woman had led a good life, but could not see her way to a belief in God. She was not a militant atheist, simply an agnostic, like so many modern people. God, in her view, had not given enough "proof" that He exists. My friend gently tried to argue the point, but to no avail. Finally, she produced the trump card which so often ends these discussions: "But, Jim, evolution has been proved by science. So the Bible can't be true!"
The article goes on to explain how Darwin's theory was formed, and that Darwin's theory is not the only one that could define evolution. Finally, it states (and explains) the Catholic Church's point of view regarding the book of Genesis and Evolution.
