Technology services?
Didn't they just announce they are getting rid of that via CSC? HP Enterprise Services, formally known as EDS, WAS the technological consulting services. What's left to get rid of? Seems like the only thing that will be left soon is the server/network hardware, and their crappy cloud...neither of which require many employees in the US. HPE will probably just black-label AWS, Azure, and GCloud as their own, and manufacture everything overseas. It will be a bunch of managers who oversee all contractors. The c-level execs will be the only actual employees. At least the HPE people get severance packages, and expanded unemployment benefits.

Voter registrations are NOT privateNote that a state's voter registration records are NOT private data. Its public record, and anybody has a right to ask for it. For example, here's a link to where you can get the entire registration database for my state.
Voter registration records include voters' name, address, date of birth, political affiliation, voter ID number, precinct and voting history, technology center district, school district and municipality.
I used to have a copy for my precinct on my hard-drive. A candidate just up and emailed it to me, unasked.

Re:No surprises
And of course they're all teaching to the state end of course tests too, probably because those are used to measure administrators' performances.
Parent of 3 school-age kids here, and this right here really bugs the bejeebers out of me. For normal school tests, the ones that count for my own kids grades during the year, and their own ability to get into college, etc., I don't hear a peep out of a teacher ever. I don't even know they are happening unless I interrogate my kids every day.
But when those EOI tests come around, which are important for the teachers and schools but don't do squat for my own kids, they damn sure let me know all about it! I get voicemails. I get emails. I get robocalls. Their grandparents get called. I messages sent home with the kids. All informing me how important it is that this one day they get lots of sleep and a good morning breakfast.(!) Even worse, the kids come home all stressed about it, so I know the teachers have been beating on them about it at school too. Over a test that doesn't help them at all.
This is actually one of the "better" school districts in the state too. But after a 15 years of this, its pretty clear that the system is not set up in a way that makes my kid's grades a priority for the school or for their teachers. Its gotten to the point that I've set the caller picture for the school's robo-calls to the album cover for Queen's News of the World, so I can instantly recognize them.

Entire Course is online
The teachers of this course pull up this website on the overhead and teach directly from it. There's no deviation from this course material. So if you want to know what they're teaching, feel free to look through it.

Re:we've legislated before we've innovated.
I'm guessing by your description that the state you are talking about is Oklahoma, and yes, they have an online renewal system, because that's the one I used last week.

State of Oklahoma as well
This frustrated me this year. I received a pre-pair card from the State of Oklahoma for my OK Tax Return. I swear I filled out the direct deposit info, but perhaps I didn't (I could check my copies...). What upset me is the fees for funds withdrawals/etc. This is my money, the state and its corporate partner shouldn't be making money off me when I try to get it.
The card did allow a single withdrawal without a fee at an ATM. I couldn't find an ATM it would work in. Finally logged in to the associated website and transferred to my banking account, with a $0.75 fee. What a crock!
Here's the Oklahoma website pdf detailing the info: http://www.tax.ok.gov/it2011/RefundCard.pdf
and their FAQ: http://www.tax.ok.gov/faq/faqDEBITCARD001.html -

Re:Someone may be stupid
As for chickenpox, at least half of all people 85 and older will have reactivation of herpes zoster, resulting in neuraglia (commonly known as "shingles"). Having shingles is a miserable existence. This can now be largely prevented by immunizations, also of those who have had chickenpox as a child. http://www.ok.gov/health/documents/shinglesadult.pdf

Re:Good ided but.. what does that make them .. you
All that depends on your instructions in your will. They are only permitted to do what you instruct them to do with the accounts, whether that be provide for their continued operation or simply shut them down . Anything else is a violation of existing estate laws.
The law itself is quite short. The "where otherwise authorized" bit is the key part. This law only applies if you instruct them to do something with the accounts.
Section 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified by the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 269 of Title 58, unless there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows :
The executor or administrator of an estate shall have the power, where otherwise authorized, to take control or, conduct, continue, or terminate any accounts of a deceased person on any social networking website, any microblogging or short message service website or any e-mail service websites.
Section 2. This act shall become effective November 1, 2010

In many areas you cannot use the term "Engineer"
For almost 20 years I've used the term "Engineer" associated with some other term as my job title. But recently I found out that this is not legal in the state of Oklahoma and in many other places across the world. The term Engineer and Engineering is reserved for those with specific Engineering training, degrees, and licenses. Wiki details some of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engineer
My place of business recently had legal notice that it had to cease using the terms "Network Engineer", "Director of Engineering", "Software Engineer", etc. The board that sent this is State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, http://www.ok.gov/pels/ and by state law they have the right to stop anyone from using the term Engineer if they are not licensed correctly.
Also I saw someone say they used the term "Software Architect", "Architect" is also a legally protected title in many places.
So now I'm a Consultant.... I've sent a letter to my legislators to complain about the boards actions as I feel that the term "Engineer" has become associated with someone who has a general area of expertise, not someone who has a specific license. But I doubt it will have any effect.

This Friday (the 10th) in Oklahoma
Here in Oklahoma your registration application must be postmarked by this Friday to be elegible for the general election on Nov 4. If you live in Oklahoma, you can check your voter registration records with the state here, and download and print out a registration application here.
For other states, I'd suggest getting information by visting this site. Google also has a nice site set up, but it doesn't seem to have my state's polling information loaded yet. Perhaps you will have better luck. There's a new Will.i.am youtube video promoting it too. I'd link it, but I'm at work. Search youtube for "5 Friends" and you should find it easily.

Re:Hi, Americans are stupid
How does this translate to most, many, majority, all or half?
Well...
Stars:
Accuracy of survey results is within +/-3.1% for overall measures for the poll.
Branches:
Individual poll questions have an error margin of 7%
Plants/Science:
The data came from a National Science Foundation survey from 2000. The survey methodology description below is from the 2001 version of the same survey. One assumes that the NSF can perform consistent scientific surveys...
Population Target: The target population of the 2001 survey was noninstitutionalized adults, age 18 or older, residing in the United States.
Sample: 2,000 completed interviews.
Variation: The coefficient of variation for a percentage estimate of 50 percent in the total population in 2001 was approximately 2.5 percent.
Investing Knowledge:
For results based on the total sample, it can be said with 95 percent confidence that the error attributable to sample and other random effects is plus or minus 4 percentage points...
Earth/Sun:
The source data was same NSF survey as the Plant/Science data, with the same sample and variance.
Aside from the indirectly quoted NSF survey, all of the error margins were published right on the same pages where you got the sample sizes. Don't you understand what they mean?
How ironic that you attempted to debunk surveys that measure knowledge. -
Hi, Americans are stupid
Only 70% of americans know how many stars are on the flag
60% of people cannot name the three branches of American government, 37% could not even name one branch, and 89% don't realize the Patriot Act allows secret search & seizures by the government
30% of americans do not know that plants produce most of the Oxygen on earth; only 11% can describe radiation and only 13% know what a molecule is
Only 38% of *investors* know what a "no-load" fund is (Which I suppose goes to show that just because Americans get involved with something doesn't mean they bother to actually know anything about it)
Only 50% of Americans know how long it takes the Earth to circle the sun
Frankly, we need to stop encouraging people to go vote. If you don't know why it is important to vote, then stay the hell home, because you probably don't know enough to intelligently cast a vote anyhow. "Get out the vote" campaigns are at best drives to sign up supports and at worst just base demagoguery.
