Re:Kan we say marKeting?Early this year, c't magazine, probably the most respected German computer magazine, published a quite interesting comparison of office suites. They subjected all of them to a test with very large documents with 140 pages of text, 120 graphics and 240 footnotes. MS Word apparently became less and less reliable as more pictures were added - suddenly they could no longer be moved and aligned properly without destroying existing layout. The tester gave up on Word but managed to do it with most of the other suites (including OO). They also found OO to be on the same level as MSO in terms of functionality.
Now, many bad experiences people may have with OO are probably related to importing existing MS documents. Even though the filters are pretty good, they are obviously not perfect, and last I checked macros were ignored entirely. However, that is not a fair comparison -- Microsoft would utterly fail it, as they don't have the most basic OO import filter. And the complexity of this problem is similarly high as the one of emulating the Windows API on Linux - you don't just have to get the file format right, you also have to duplicate Microsoft's way of interpreting it, even if it's buggy and/or inconsistent.
Nevertheless, the developers are always working hard on improving import filters, as it is obviously essential to business migration. OpenOffice 2.0 will have improved filters, and it will also have much better database management with support for databases directly stored in files (as Access does).
OpenOffice is clearly more performance-hungry than MS Office, although in my experience that is mostly the start-up time. I don't anticipate major improvements in this area. If you're looking for a very slim MS Word replacement, KWord or AbiWord are probably projects worth keeping an eye on. TextMaker, a proprietary package, also exists for Linux. And if you're into DTP, Scribus is quite mature already.

OpenOffice Database User Tools
I use OpenOffice Databse User Tools. It doesn't have all the great features of FileMaker, but serves as a pretty good alternative to that and MS Access. I think the Form AutoPilot and Report AutoPilot address the problems you're facing.

I wouldn't recommend using it to open/edit MS Word documents though, because that "format" is inherently proprietary and buggy. I wouldn't even call it a format since allegedly it's just a memory-dump from the MS Word application. -

Do you mean a filter for use from within OOo? Been done. If you mean for use within MS Office programs, oofda. I can see the utility, but really, isn't it much easier (for those with it installed) to simply do any ex/im from within OOo?

Anatomy of a bug in Open Office...here is a bug concerned with a 'disk full' message. Took a couple of weeks for a developer to respond, and its fixed in the next release.

Dvorak's point:ever-changing suite of .DOC formats
But having said that, you are right. Word file format compatibility is the #1 problem.
Paradoxically, MS-Word does a worse job at compatibility with older versions of the MS-Word format than does OpenOffice.org aka OOo. OOo also has superior support for other legacy formats like WordPerfect, which can be found in abundance in the government or in law firms.Most of Dvorak's commentary is just grumbling about a bad product, but here is what might be the core of the problem:
"The ever-changing
Even saving to olderA more stable format is needed by businesses, agencies, organizations and individuals that value the information stored on their local drives, archives and file servers and/or is finds a benefit from the access or re-use of such information. This is especially true for documents that must be reusable or must be stored for longer than the half-life of the MS-Word formats (about 18 months). For these, there should be some concern about choosing a more stable file format at least.
A more stable file format is not an option when toeing the MS line, because MS uses changes in [default] file formats to drive the sales of new versions of MS Office. Especially since 68% of MS Office sales come from sales of new hardware, where in contrast for MS Windows this is 90%. That means that some portion of that 32% represents the sale to owners of earlier versions and is presumably driven by file format incompatibility. Given that MS-Office is one of the two *profitable* lines for MS, that's not likely to change for the better. In fact, Microsoft has recently quit the U.N. standards group:

and is the only member of OASIS holding back on the XML-based file formats." OASIS calls for OpenOffice XML spec" Most people can connect the dots and see where MS is heading with this. The way out is to insist on products that use file formats well documented for interoperability and long term preservation. Legal issues aside, look at how well GIF and PDF have weathered the years. Try the same with a word-processing document of the same vintage!

One more important missing featureIs Linux OO capable of rendering fonts using sub-pixel hinting (for LCD screens), yet?
A friend of mine with an LCD screen had trouble with the fonts and although his desktop was nicely anti-aliased Open Office stubborny refused to show anti-aliased fonts.
Searching OpenOffice.org revealed this:
"We should do it but I doubt the OOo 2.0 target...."
The issue has been classified as "an enhancement", has 3 votes and thus won't be fixed anytime soon!
I suppose everyone running OO on Linux (except for those three persons) is using a traditional monitor and couldn't care less about sub-pixel hinting.

Licensing?
I'll be really curious to see how the licensing will be handled. While this model of "services" may be OK for corporate and home use, I wonder how it will go for educational settings.
Currently many of my students have Office on their "home" PCs. They can also use it in the labs, since we have a campus site license.
However, if the software moves to the web and is licensed by campus, will the software's access be limited by (campus) IP address? What happens to the kid that goes home for break and needs to use Word or Excel?
Sure, the campus can add some kind of password system to let the kid access the software via the campus license from home, but now you are adding work to overworked (and underfunded) IT departments.
Yeah, this is going to be interesting to watch.
OK, I'd love to see OpenOffice or some other option take off, but our campus is so bound to Word (hell, I get three line memos in a Word doc attached to an email), I can't see the secretarial force even open to considering a platform change to other software.

If all software was free, why would anyone bother developing it?
Gee, I can't think of anyone who would develop software without getting paid for it...
But seriously, there are several reasons people would write software whose price is 0:
- People want better software to do $WHATEVER (for values of $WHATEVER that make money, which is most of them), so they write it
- People want to get a job as a programmer so they write a software package to prove they aren't total code monkeys
- People like fame; they like being admired and appreciated
- An industry consortium decides they need an open, standard, free way to do $WHATEVER
- Some people have a political motivation to undermine proprietary software (we may not have that same motivation; but it is a real driving force for some people)
- Some people like to help others (ditto)
- Your company might want to make your product universally (or nearly so) used in order to be able to charge money for training, certification, etc.
- I mentioned 15 high-profile products that are competitive with best-of-breed and are available for $0 (and not all of it is Free as in speech). All of them were written because one of the above bullet points (or one I forgot) applied.
There are lots of motivations for people's actions besides money.

I heartily agree. I submitted a bug report to OO.o a while ago requesting they stick a bug reporting feature directly into OO.o. Although many would still not use it, I'm certain it would encourage more bug reports and improve the product. My original request is here. As you can see if you look at it, it's dated January 2004. The problem with bug reports/feature requests in OO.o is obviously that they sometimes take a *long* time to be addressed. I guess if people really want to see this feature they can register with OO.o and vote to support this request.
I'm not sure whether this would increase responsiveness to bug reports in general, since this is a volunteer project. That's the Achilles heel of F/OSS, as most here are already aware. -
