MarkMonitor/WHOIS/What the hell is this?
I was curious, so I looked up YouTube in WHOIS. They use MarkMonitor as their registrar. Not surprising - you pay a whole bunch for registrations and the registrar doesn't roll over at random DMCA requests.
But, here's what was in the WHOIS response, along with the other data. WnTF did this start happening?

DNS IssueI had noticed the outage and think it may be a DNS issue. I guess I won't be buying anything today. Take a look at the whois output for amazon.com:

Re:Tucows
What is the exact problem? You can try logging into your control panel directly at the OpenSRS (Tucows) site, skipping the reseller:
https://manage.opensrs.net/
The same username & password that you use with the reseller should work. -
Tucows / OpenSRS
Wonder if Tucows / OpenSRS will make a bid -- though I haven't seen anything on their reseller resource center. I'd trust them over MS or Verisign - they listen to their customers and actively support the Linux platform (heck, even their site is PERL and PHP).
/me wanders off to call his Tucows rep... -
Re:Not possible....
What he's talking about is a host record with the registry, which is the structure that stores information about authoritative name servers for a domain.
Yeah, I know what a glue record is. I've set them up before, and there was no need for reverse DNS to be set up.
Some registrars require reverse DNS for these and some don't.
Therefore you "don't have to have reverse DNS set up to set up a host." You just have to use a registrar that doesn't require reverse DNS.
You definitely cannot use a dynamic ("semi-static") IP address (well, I guess you could, but it would be a massive hassle and your domains would fail to resolve half the time).
Depends on how often your IP address changes. Many of us have IP addresses which only change every few months, if even that much. The TTL is usually set at a day or two, so like I said, you have to be "willing to lose mail for a day or two whenever you have to change your NS records." So your domains would fail to resolve more like 1% of the time, and the "massive hassle" would be to log into your registrar's management system (such as https://manage.opensrs.net/ and change the nameserver IP address.

Re:Good ideaThat wouldn't help
... I don't trust VeriSign! :-)Seriously, though
... eNIC (part of VeriSign) has seriously screwed up one of my DNS server's glue records under one of our .CC domain names! We had to renumber our network (our ISP finally got their own IP space) and I sent the request in through their web control panel. Yes, they did add the new IP address glue record, but they kept the old one! So now our DNS server's glue record points to two IPs -- one which works and one which doesn't. (And we do host a lot of sites, so I'm sure users are starting to feel the lag.)I've been trying to resolve this situation for TWO MONTHS now, and no one at eNIC seems to have a clue. Ignored most of my mail until I sent a somewhat-nasty one to them and threatened to change registrars, and they claim to have made the fix. (However, ns1.globaldns.com and others have yet to show that up, and it's been almost a week.)
I'll be SO glad when management finally approves the switch to OpenSRS (RSN!) so we can get away from VeriSign... I'm beginning to prefer to deal with GeoTrust for SSL instead (none of that "fax us your business license" garbage
... and it's a 10-minute deal.) -
What does this mean for OpenSRS et al?
Does this mean that all of the "other" places to register your domain names (like OpenSRS) won't be able to do it anymore? I've found everyone BUT Network Solutions to be incredibly helpful and much better priced for domain name registration. Any insight into what this means for the open competitors, anyone?

Simple, don't use NSI
I've only just seen this article, and I have to run, so I'm sure many people have made the point, just don't use NSI, IMO they are money-grabbing tossers, there's plenty of alternatives, go to Tucows and you'll find many resellers of their OpenSRS system, like this crowd. The only domain that is not allowed, is 'example' for use in textbooks, plus the tlds themselves., (not the cctlds mind) Blah, I'm rushing. There is no banning of vulgar words in tlds, just some regitrars who are afraid of getting hassle

Re: No Problem with GoodbyeNSI and Tita-nic
it is very easy to switch. NSI engineered these fears. it is pure manipulation.
the risk is far greater if you stay.
Use any OpenSRS registrar for easy fast and safe transfers:
the one you find on Tita-nic.com for example is very good.
please don't pay more then 11 - 15$ per domain per year.
we pledge to track any abuse by NSI you report to us.
we will publicize it widely. KeepYourDomain .
>How do I know which Resistrar I have my domains with ?
on Tita-nic.com push "who owns/whois",
search for your domain, then see: "Server used for this query:"
for any transfer, it is not necessary to know.
just get the transfer done with a few clicks
and have the domain for a full additional year
on a safe place within 5 days.
