Re:Not enough ram...Agreed. I'm still using a 5000, and with OpenZaurus and
/home configured to reside on a 256M SD card I could not bring myself to shell out $699 for this.Maybe when there's a 64M RAM and OpenZaurus is proven on it, but not as it is now.

Not enough ram...
to match it's other abilities. I run OpenZaurus on my SL-5500 and I can pick a kernel to use all the ram for swap, 48 swap / 12 storage, etc. This thing's biggest drawback is it only has 32mb of RAM, and my SL-5500 is pretty slow on some applications like the TKC apps when it only has 32mb of swap to chew on.

RAM Decision
I think they made a bad decision on the ram:
Rather than using a split-RAM architecture like the Sl-5500 and Pocket PCs do, the SL-5600 will have 32 MB of RAM that is dedicated to just active memory.
While the Sharp rom on the SL-5500 leaves your hands tied and dedicates the 64MB built-in ram 50/50 to ramdisk and available RAM, various custom ROM images like the Crow rom and OpenZaurus let you move the ramdisk to an SD flash card while freeing up all 64MB for usable RAM.
Having only 32MB for main memory REALLY ties your hands. Is SDRAM really so expensive that Sharp couldn't have used 64MB for main memory? -
Looks fairly similiar to the Zaurus SL-5500which I picked up fairly recently and is exactly what I've been looking for in a PDA (with OpenZaurus its even better). However:
this machine does not feature the slide out keyboard, and while it is quite small on the zaurus, I'd say I use it about half the time (hey, you ever get drunk and try to use graffiti?
;) )the machine [looks] very large! Like a Jornada or something!
;)I'd rather see 802.11b than bluetooth...

Re:And this is news, how?
>So, a company releases a proprietary DivX player
-Yes... tckPlayer is propriatary
>for a proprietary window system
-Nope... The windowing system and toolkit are GPL. For an entirely GPLed enviroment that will still run standard Zaurus apps (minus Java for now, sorry) see Opie which is the UI for OpenZaurus. We're building a player for all these formats as I type this.
>running on hardware that's mostly used in Japan
-Nope again. The Zaurus 5500 is a US/EU product.

Re:Other links
For example, the apps are rough around the edges and source code for them doesn't seem to be available.
OpenZaurus is a community version of the root filesystem / romimage for the Sharp Zaurus SL-5000d PDA (the developper version you could buy at LinuxWorld or JavaOne prior to the official launch of the Zaurus). The current release is beta 2.6 and it is fairly useable. A SL-5500 version will probably be released soon (there are very few hardware differences).
On a side note, you should have a look on the Zaurus-general mailing list archive for all your questions about this fabulous PDA.
Disclaimer : I'm probably biased as I bought one at LinuxWorld, and I'm in loooove with it. ;-)
