A ray of goddamned sunshine doth sparkle down...Yeah, this jaded game writer/journalist finds himself still mourning over the death of his beloved Bleem, which was surely the darkest day in console emulation's short history.
But this development on the emulation front surely hauls my spirit out of the icy mud in whence it has lay for the past twenty two hours...
Now, most of you "l33t c0unt73rs7r1k3 d00ds" out there could probably care less that Mame(mighty mighty Mame), runs on Bill's little black-and-translucent-green baby. You'll just go back to your pansy girl game of Counterstrike, secure in knowing that you'll never put money into the Beast From Redmond's coffers, that you'll never wrap your greasy, sweaty hands, hands that still reek of smegma from your last session of furious masturbation to shoddily rendered Sailor Moon animated
.gifs... No, you'll never wrap those hands around the meaty, massive, beautiful Xbox controller. No, you'll just go back to bitching about snipers and wall hacks.
This bitter, dissafected recluse, on the other hand shall be clamoring for an Xbox. For you, little whitebread Halflife-playing suburban pinko, will never know the utter joy that I, and folks like myself will be partaking in when we boot up the Moon Rangor, Monkey Donkey or Photograph Boy rom images.
You folks may be content with playing you Halo, and your Munch's Oddysee, or even the purile Counterstrike, but as for me, baby. As for me, I'll find my evenings curled up in front of a roaring, sparking space heater, Xbox controller in hand, pounding the mortal fuck through the Insane Worrier...
I bid you, fellow Slashbots, a warm farewell...

Like game music? Like electronica?
Then you need to check out Overclocked ReMix. There are some excellent game remixes available. Right now the downloads are limited to certain hours (bandwidth issues) unless you use a mirror. It's really cool to hear how creative people can be with the old game tunes you grew up playing.
-
Retro Tunage...There's a great collection of retro (although not necessarily "vintage") tunes available at:
A ton of old NES-era games remixed with new instrumentation and some downright questionable rescoring.
Fun memories, if nothing else.
-
Game MusicThe problem I have with a lot of old game music is that the volume isn't tapered at the end, so it just drops off. Even better than the original music, however, are some remixes; Overclocked Remix has quite a few good ones, and they've just redone the layout on their site to make things easier to find (although the downloads can be a bit slow). I recommend the c64vibe remix of the good ole Arkanoid music, myself.
Most of the later Squaresoft rpgs were released with full soundtracks, as well, most of which you can probably find on ebay.

My CDs I burned from MP3s
95% of all the music on my CDs is legally free for download over the internet, and the rest is stuff that you couldn't find on a commercial CD if you tried, because it is released by the original artist/remixer over Napster, WinMX, etc. While I have in my posession some pirated music, a lot of the stuff I got off of Napster was 100% legal in one way or another (example: my mp3 of Weird Al's Amish Paradise is legal because I had the tape and not the CD at the time, thus I couldn't [easily and with comparable quality] rip my own MP3 to put on my comp. example2: The Tetris Techno Remix that starts with a synth-voice saying "Let's play some Tetris motherfucker" is, last I checked, not a commercial song. Example3: pulse120's red planet is free for download at his mp3.com artist page) In other words, my use of Napster has largely not detracted from CD sales, and yet the RIAA doesn't let me use it to get free music that I couldn't find anywhere else. Leave it to the people in power to screw everyone else over.

Sounds like the SDL website would be more helpful. That's at http://www.libsdl.org. If you're writing games for Linux, it should always be your first stop.
If you want to learn OpenGL, your next stop should be NeHe's tutorials on Gamedev.Net.
GameDev itself is helpful...
As is Flipcode...
If you're interested in writing a good game, you should learn from those that came before you. Check them out using emulators from Zophar's Domain...
Also, no game developer worth his salt can ignore the virtual treasure trove of information archived at GamaSutra...
And finally, you'll want some cool free video game tunes to listen to while you code. The two best sites for video game remixes are Bart Klepka's remixes and Remix at Overclocked.org:
http://bart.overclocked.org/
http://remix.overclocked.org/Go to it. I hope to play your games soon.

Re: Your .sig (even more OT) - myoff-topic replyWhat game is that from? It could be the next ALL YOUR BASE!
I doubt it...but it does still crack me up. Anyway, the game is called BattleRangers, and I found the image zanyvg.overclocked.org. Most of the stuff featured there is boring but I should give credit since that's where I stole the image from myself. I put the image on my roommate's computer so I could get a shorter url that would fit within the 120 char sig limit.

Re:Uhh Duh... (OT)Interesting sig. Are you trying to create the next "all your base are belong to us"-type catchphrase?
No. I first got the image from zanyvg.overclocked.org (the game is called Battlerangers) and I've been cracking up about it ever since.

Re:money talksOne solution for him would be to offer some sort of payment form via some banner or advertising to record companies which I haven't seen on any article.
Please visit eFront.com to get your site hosted and use a banner ad payment system. That really works!

Re:HELLO GENTLEMANThe true origin was a "competition" by overclocked.org to dub the intro to the game Zero Wing.
-
Re:Hidden message in slashdot story!!Some info and t-shirts for this all your bases thing...
-
Re:For great meaning click all zig...ZeroWing
Apparently a line of games from SNK have been bad enough in translating english to lead to the term SNK-glish being coined. This was all news to me.

-
Origin of "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"
It's from the intro sequence of an old SNES game called Zero Wing, where all the english is apparently the result of a horrible mistranslation job.
You can see an animated gif of the intro sequence here. -
"All your base are belong to us"

Re:WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN?
Here. It's in Quicktime.
-
Re:Heh
From Zero Wing, to be precise. See http://zanyvg.overclocked.org/zerowing/index.html
