Technically Amazon will still be running on Oracle
Amazon Aurora is technically Oracle-based, depending on how you look at it, since it's based off MySQL, which is currently an Oracle product. According to https://www.percona.com/blog/2..., it is based off the MySQL database source code of 5.6.10, which was released 2013-02-05, 3 years and 1 month after Oracle purchased Sun, which is 2 years after Sun bought MySQL.

Re:Galera Clustering
If you're using Galera, I'd recommend you to read this - https://aphyr.com/posts/327-ca... . Depending on your application requirements, you may have unwanted behaviour from your cluster.
And then read this, after that, as it is a response from Percona about the first article . https://www.percona.com/blog/2015/09/17/clarification-call-maybe-mariadb-galera-cluster/

Re:Down-market is Oracle too
Yes, Larry's minions may have their hands on the old MySQL code, but there's this little project called MariaDB that is MySQL++++. It is a direct, bit-for-bit drop-in, and it's faster and has more features and they even do bug fixes for (gasp!) free. Admittedly it's run by a guy who probably doesn't know that much about MySQL, but he seems to be muddling through.
Oh, and there's a company called Percona that actually does support for MariaDB, adds features, and then feeds them back to the MariaDB community, but that's clearly an unsustainable model.
There are also a few people out there who would suggest that moving "downmarket" from Oracle to Postgres will actually feel like upmarket. And it's supported by professional groups on six continents.

Re:Google Apps
There's also Percona server, which is very well supported.

MariaDB and Percona
Oracle is not that big a of concern.
There is MariaDB which is data-compatible with MySQL, and has some nice additions (like microsecond performance data), and there is also Percona Server.
If Oracle messes up, like they did with OpenOffice, there will be another version that they cannot touch, like LibreOffice.

PerconaDB
PerconaDB is a drop in replacement for MySQL. If you don't know who Percona are, you're missing out on some magic - these guys are MySQL tuning and recovery experts. I'd trust this over MariaDB - never even heard of MariaDB until I saw this article. http://www.percona.com/software/percona-server/downloads/

MySQL Cluster
MySQL Seems like it could be interesting, but I can't get over how it requires the whole thing to be hosted in memory. I'm much more interested in Percona Cluster which is also based off MySQL.
