Re:Wow!
On a side note, try dialing numbers like 1-800-F**K-OFF. Last time we checked (party, late at night) they were assigned.
It could have been any of the following (or more):
1800-dual-Ned
1800-dual-med
1800-dual-nee
1800-dual-odd
1800-dual-ode
1800-dual-offCourtesy of http://www.phonespell.org/

Numbers are easy...
Look at your slashdot ID. 157947 can be written as 1 - 57 - 9 - 47. Its all downhill from there.
47 is easy if you are a Star Trek or a Hitman fan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/47_(number)
9+1 are 10. Which is how much you need to add (as you are going downhill, or backwards) to 47 to get the SECOND PAIR of numbers.Or you can start at 15, the first 2 digits, divide it in half like they are integers and get the 7, add 2 and get 9, add the 2's you used so far to get 4, and either subtract that 2 you added to the 9 earlier to get the final 7 or just remember that 1337 starts with 1 and ends with 7.
Yeah... I know... I've been confusing people with my number mnemonics for years.
I've looked at my fiancee's phone number thousands of times since we started dating 7 years ago, and all I remember is that it has like an 8 in it.
Or, why don't you try spelling it?
Or use some other mnemonic

Round it...
I remember Pi as 3.14, rounded off. My phone number is something like 834.21, rounded off.
Seriously though, they put letters on the number keypads for a reason. http://www.phonespell.org/
Just make sure you're comfortable with what your number spells before you give out this "trick" to your friends for easy remembering. I'm sure people with the number 257-8xxx would not be enthusiastic to tell people to "Just Dial 'Al Queda!'"
Yes, that's a real number in many area codes (I blanked it out, which won't stop the ingenius here from looking up what it really is, and Googling who actually is stuck with that horrible number). I feel worse for them than people who get prank calls to Jenny at 867-5309. Just don't call these people up asking for "Ben". I'd feel bad if months from now I made that prank call and one of you spoiled it for me. ;) -
Re:Any good info though

It dosen't give words, though, it just converts the numbers to their corresponding letters. Somewhat interesting anyway. -
Re:Okay, so that was probably a joke

Re:Generally sillyness...Remember what happened when 800 got crowded? They added 888, then 877 shortly after that. The TLD space is overcrowded, so shouldn't the same thing be happening?
WRT vanity 8xx numbers: Have you been to PhoneSpell? A phone number that spells one thing usually spells several others. My company's customer service number (software sales) spells the company name, although it can also spell several other things that could be construed as sexist/misogynist statements...
