Re:iPods
What I meant is that the connector socket on the iPod side is not a standard USB type. Instead of using a standardized USB (or mini-USB) socket together with a standardized stereo line out Apple created their own version. That means that you have to take your cable with you if you want to hook up your iPod since none of the standard USB cables will fit.

Re:Why USB?
That's great reasoning for a home stereo, but hiss isn't as much of a problem in cars because there is so much other background noise... engine, wind, wheels. Yep, you're still limited to a range of inputs, but I was lucky and found maximum-volume works with my line-in adapter.
The ipod doesn't have a digital audio out. I don't see why you think the icelink has this. I'm not saying it couldn't -- it could mount the ipod as a drive and do its own mp3 playback of the data files -- but that's not the intuitive approach. -

No. Gigabit ethernet uses the same pairs as 10/100 ethernet.
Um, 1000base-T DOES use all four pairs. A quick google search turned up the following links...

Your best bet as far as wiring goes is to cut apart an extra USB cable. The wires are color coded to correspond to pin numbers.
Referencing your orininal connector and getting pin numbers simply connect the following pins to wire colors:
1-red
2-white
3-green
4-black
(ignore the shielding on the USB cable or connect it to ground (pin 4))
