probably due to new tivos with dvd-r
The new Tivos have a dvd-r. It would cut down on selling of sports dvds if you can just "burn your own" so content makers are going to freak. It still doesn't seem to restrictive since I don't watch pay per view or the NFL.
like this one tivo / burner from pioneer -

Moving shows with Tivo
"Nope. Just out of interest, how do you record something for someone else with TiVo?"
With the built-in DVD burner. -

TV Recorders...Just having gone through the research of buying a home dvd recorder, i can say that in those, dvd-r seems to be the overall leader, by about 2-1, the only brand that will burn both is the sony.
this was a completely informal survey based on the "info cards" at my local electronics store.
the biggest problem seems to be that none of them would pass the "girfriend test", except the $900 tivo/dvdr from pioneer.

Re:Poor manufacturing, but still far superior to TNot only that, but unlike with a ReplayTV, with a TiVo, you don't have to go to the trouble of setting up a network with your computer and transferring the files over your network to your computer to burn DVDs.
You can just buy a TiVo and burn with the built-in DVD burner.

Re:Don't do it for cost
You are aware that you can buy a tivo unit with built in DVD burner for under $700, right?

Re:The appliance that never was (TiVO Mafia?)
Erm,
Check out DVD recorders, especially ones with Hard drives. They are not as good as tivo, but do everything you mentioned, plus allow you to dump stuff onto DVD (which until the latest DVD tivo combo, which has no monthly fee for tivo BASIC (no TVGuide)
