Re:Could do well
Same.
I wouldn't move to NZ
.. however if Abbot signs the ACTA then we are screwed. At that point it may be worth moving to NZ. -
Re:All minor parties are teaming together
No surprise here. All the minor parties are doing the same thing.
Some parties are. Not all of them. The Pirate Party in particular opted out of those deals, and allocated preferences according to a vote of the membership. The party has also published its preferencing process online, which you can read at http://pirateparty.org.au/2013/08/18/preferencing-statement-for-federal-election-2013/

Re:Aus Labor Party is anything but democratic
:D :D :DWell, you can still order
* mango and bean sprouts salad (but don't mix seafood into, it may become explosive!) with or without a side of feta
* shipwreck stew or...
* even Ecuadorian sitting duckBesides, the last election showed a change in the added spices and... yes, not to be missed... we've seen some Queenslander's eggs being powdered in the process (and now being reconstituted), so nobody can deny it was interesting.
As the patrons pay only if they do not order, the change in the served dishes will happen if enough patrons ask for a it. -
Why not join with PPAU?
In terms of principles and values Wikileaks has a lot in common with the Pirate Party and the Australian chapter ( http://pirateparty.org.au/ ). I see no reason in making yet another party. Unless they just want to capitalize on name recognition. I guess that's probably the sole reason - ro re-invent that wheel (pirate wheel: http://falkvinge.net/pirate-wheel/ ).

Re: sensible, realistic protection
Have you read the Pirate Party's submission regarding copyright review, or their submission regarding patent reform? Do you have specific points of disagreement other than just implying that it is not sensible?

Re:rms on pirate party
If the Australian Pirate Party go for 10 years not 5, then we can assume RMS won't object to that either.
Current PPAU policy is for 15 years, so I'm guessing RMS would be OK with it?

Here is the current platform. In it, copyright is limited to 15 years.
I'd encourage you to read the whole thing, and if you've got ideas to contribute, please jump on IRC or a mailing list:

If you ever see anything like this in Australia then contact the Australian Pirate Party who are fighting against this nonsense down under

Re:I find this hard to believe
Of course there is: Pirate Party Australia. Problem is that Australia is just like Canada, the US, and the UK: in national/federal elections, most actual votes cast are *discarded*.

Re:Oh no! National interest trumping the Free MarkIt's unlikely to have much to do with the Australian national interest.
The current Australian government has been making increasingly bizarre decisions, many of which will clearly will be to the detriment of Australian citizens. It's very likely this decision to ban a specific vendor, along with many other recent government mandates are at the behest of their puppet masters.
“Four Corners” itself noted that the key Labor coup plotters, as revealed in WikiLeaks cables, had long been secretly informing Washington about the internal workings of the Labor government. The same cables make clear that the Obama administration was disenchanted with Rudd over a range of issues, especially his attempts to moderate rising tensions between the US and China. Gillard, on the other hand, was viewed in positive terms as someone who could be counted on to toe Washington’s line.

Re:So what now?
I'd stay away from the Australian Greens if I were you, they're not at all like the European Greens.
Australian Greens (source: http://greens.org.au/policies/media-arts-science/arts- )
"introduce legislation to protect intellectual and artistic property rights."European Greens (source: http://www.greens-efa.eu/fileadmin/dam/Documents/Policy_papers/Creation_and_copyright_in_the_digital_era_EN.pdf )
"We want to shorten the protection time to something that is reasonable from both society’s and an investor’s point of view, and propose 20 years from publication."What?
Not convinced yet?
OK. Let me put the final nail in the Australian Green's 1880s era coffin:
The pre-decision draft (PDF) of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has drawn praise from the Greens, but the party says the devil may be in the fine print.Pirate Party Australia has decried the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
Australians. You decide what future you want... but at least DO something!

So, as an Australian I know complaining about this is going to do jack. So how can we protect ourselves?

It's worse than that
According to documents released under Freedom of Information, the Attorney-General wants a "solution" to "be educative and aim to change the social norms."
That's right. They want to force "education" onto the population to make them want to prop up the content industry's failing business models.
Of course, only industry groups were invited to this meeting. I have to say, Ludlam is the reason that I voted greens in the last election.

Re:Pirate Party Australia not Impressed
Australians can currently join the Pirate Party of Australia for free.
We currently see a massive offensive aimed at the US's strongest allies: the UK, Canada and Australia. Once Big Content gets their agenda settled overseas, they will then try to implement the same thing domestically, pointing at these same allies and then saying US legislation should be brought in line with their allies' legislation.
-
Pirate Party Australia not Impressed
http://pirateparty.org.au/give-no-quarter: They recognise it is impractical, won't adequately protect privacy or due process and is just the ISPs trying to avoid regulation. That's my interpretation of their release, anyway.

Down Under
"Do you come from a land down under? Where business rules and their men plunder? Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover."
If you're living in Australia, visit your local Pirate Party and consider to join for free. That is the only way to stop this madness; the same-old, same-old parties will never give in.

Re:I'll just leave this here
According to Wikipedia, they couldn't run due to registration requirements. It turns out they tried to register but this wasn't completed when the election was called.
According to Pirate Party Australia's website joining the party is free of charge at the moment, so if you agree with their constitution, by all means, do sign up and even better: become an active member. As far as I know Australia doesn't have the undemocratic "first past the post" system so, just like in Berlin, you actually have a change to score some seats. Provided, of course, that you get your message out, in particular to the younger voter and that you can actually get them to go out and cast their ballot. Again, it worked in Berlin (8.9% of the votes).
-
I'll just leave this here
-
Re:Arrr!
Yeah, you could do that or you can join for free and contribute something by advocating for saner laws and stronger civil liberties.
-
Re:Arrr!
Not "like", join the actual Pirate Party Australia! Why? Because it's part of Pirate Party International. These things can only be successfully challenged with international cooperation.
-
Pirate Party Australia's stance
Pirate Party Australia has recommended the implementation of a voluntary classification system like the ESRB or PEGI, the removal of the Refused Classification category and the ability to sell unclassified material to adults only, and of course, R18+ for games. It can be found here.
All the other submissions can be found on the ALRC site here.

Re:What's with minority governments recently?
In the Federal election last year here (Australia) I honestly found myself completely disliking EVERY candidate for one reason or another
... first election I've ever felt that way. Apparently many in the UK and Canada feel the same.Oh really? What's there to dislike about these guys?

Political party against it
Complimentary pirate party against ACTA. http://pirateparty.org.au/
There's some discussion to protest the next ACTA meeting in Sydney. It would be great to emphasise how shocking it is for ACTA discussion to be held behind doors when it affects everyone in Australia.
Please do post other options or suggestions against ACTA. I don't want this gross violation of democracy to occur.

If you really want to go against it
Political party Pirate Party Australia
We would really appreciate volunteers! Ask in the forum how to help. You can also help by advocacy. Get people to think and talk PPAU when angry about copyright/patents/internet/etc.
Note: PPAU were not in the recent federal elections because registration wasn't complete by the time the election was called.

Re:What can be done about this - in 3 weeks?
Russell Wattie (Camel) is running for a place in the Senate. He is a spokesman for the United Motorcycle Council of Queensland. He is against the anti-freedom of association laws (aka anti-biker laws), the ABCC and for a bill of rights.
There is also the LDP http://ldp.org.au/ who might prove worthwhile and if they can get it registered, for future elections the Pirate Party Australia http://www.pirateparty.org.au/
-
Re:The ASP
The only realistic vote in Australia seems to be a vote for the Australian Sex Party.

Re:Somebody fill me in here
It just so happens a number of those seats are, currently, in and around Adelaide; a highly religious, conservative city known as "The City of Churches".
That's a bit misleading: Adelaide is actually less religious than the national average. It's where I live, and I haven't met anyone here who knows about the proposed internet censorship and thinks that it's a good idea. Admittedly, my sample is rather biased, comprised mainly of like-minded friends. (Some even members of our Pirate Party.)
-
Re:Looking slightly dangerous for Rudd
So your argument is: “Last time they raped us a lot, but this time they promised to rape us less than who is currently raping us, so: Vote for them!”
Honestly: How fuckin’ stupid are you?
You know exactly that as soon as they have won, the’ll fuck you over majorly. Because it happened every single time before. Yet weirdly, by the end of the next term, you have conveniently forgotten that, and believe the new set of lies.
How about voting for... you know... neither of the two?Protip: http://www.pirateparty.org.au/

Re:Elections are coming, Labor wants votes.

They only need a few more members to be able to officially register as a political party and it's now FREE TO JOIN! Just print out the form, sign it, scan/photograph it, email it in and be part of the solution. -

Re:Gah - somebody stop this ridiculous man
Better yet vote for Pirate Party Australia or The Australian Sex Party both of whom are against internet censorship in their policies.
-
Re:Gah - somebody stop this ridiculous man
Or maybe even the Pirate Party. They are on a membership drive, nows your chance to get on board and support a Party that believes in maintaining our rights and freedoms.
-
Re:Now does everyone realise
I'm a climate skeptic though...so no Green for me.
I'm voting Pirate if we can stand anyone up for it

Re:Good to see game developers put their foot down
What are people supposed to do? No politician is going to get elected on the platform of allowing an R18+ category or doing away with censorship.
I suspect these guys hope you are wrong about that.

Gah gotta reply to myself, Really should check my links work before posting, getting close to sleep time and my submit finger is being a little trigger happy! Pirate Party Australia
