Re:Alternatives, in that case?
The list misses Pivot and all those Blosxom variants and many others. You have plenty of choice.

Why?
Why is it that WordPress has such a fanbase within the geek croud that it is mentioned every odd week on slashdot and simular forums but such powerfull well-built open source blogging tools like b2evolution or the awesome Pivot never get mentioned - even if they reach a major release? I've mostly heard programmers rave about WordPress but it doesn't appear to me as the cream of oss server side goodies, so what is it all about?
Anybody care to shed some light on this for me? -
Re:If self hosting, what to use?
I don't like WordPress like some others here do. I think there's to much of an unjustified hype about it. I consider both b2evolution and Pivot superiour in terms of quality, features and usability. Pivot is database free which can be a big performance plus if you're only powering a single blog. I'd actually suggest you check out Pivot. It's backend is approachable and extremly easy to use and the available templates are a wonderfull groundwork to get rolling with your own style.
Of course all these are GPLd blogtools. If you insist on spending money for a commercial blogtool licence I'd strongly recommend Expression Engine over Movable Type or others.
A third alternative are payed blog services. You might want to check out Squarespace which looks like solid functionality crossed with a designers wet dream. -
Pivot
seeing as my blog is done with it
:) Its from our friends in the netherlands. Main page is here -
Switched from Blogger to PivotI switched from blogger to running Pivot on a unix server I have an account on. I did this for two reasons:
1) I wanted to know whether anyone was actually visiting my page and from where and how often; and
2) I wanted the option of putting my own advertising up in the event I ever get a significant number of hits. Sure I might make $2/yr, but the option is still there.
Yes I could have configured blogger to upload to the same account, but in the end, I chose Pivot. Good reasons for choosing it were that you only need PHP and berkely db running on the box (very very common software), so you didn't need to configured any backend databases. The only downside to this of course is that you need to make everything under the blog dir writable by the apache process.
