Excel PacMan. Best thing is it has all the sounds of the original arcade machine, and the graphics are pixel perfect copies.

Re:why is your blood boiling? preconceived notions
Some Japanese guy did a great reimplentation of the arcade version of Pacman in Excel

Re:The article does some heavy glorifying
Japan's internal network is actually quite fast. Things are only NATed because most people do not know how to set-up port forwarding on the router. I currently have fiber and while most things I download only reach ~ 600k, I suspect that in part due to my downloading them from the west (see below) and in part due to my 11Mbps wifi card.
The connection times to Europe do tend to suck a bit. EG it can take 5-10sec to connect via SSH to boxs in the UK an Russia. This is due to all connections being routed via the US. Not to say that the US backbone is slow, but when data has to travel 3/4 around the world and back, it'll take time.
For those that are interested here are a few diagrams of my ISP/ISP backbone's infrastructure. Japanese only I'm afraid. http://www.plala.or.jp/support/network/backborn/index.html

Re:Spreadsheets fundamentally flawedIf you can get a user to understand the difference between absolute and relative cell addressing, the problem with editing individual formulas is made a copy-paste task. Instead of typing (or clicking) all the cell references each time, you write the formula pattern and fill it into the appropriate cells.
I agree that the single-line editor for spreadsheet formulas is archaic. Please give us indented spreadsheet formulas. The parenthesis highlighting is nice, but not enough.
If you want spreadsheets as a "rigorous programming environment," please use Visual Basic for Applications. It's there, and will do many nifty tricks. You even get the benefit of making "compiled" Excel spreadsheets.
Myself, I used an embedded Excel spreadsheet within a VB application to generate charts. Change the numbers in the spreadsheet (via VB), and the charts redrew with new numbers. Much easier to use than the Chart OCX.
Somewhat offtopic, but this is
/. -- back in the mid-80s, there was a database program for the Mac called Double Helix. It used drag-n-drop, flowchart shapes to program how the database worked. As a programmer, it was frustrating to get the drags and drops of the arrows to work properly. As a non-programmer, users were still just as confused as to what the shapes were supposed to do. -
Re: Professional Excel DevelopmentExcel is a fantastically powerful, flexible tool, and also has a portability advantage when working with people who have Office installed, but not Perl or Python (i.e. pretty much everyone). The fact that people here don't know how to do anything more complicated than adding column A to column B doesn't change that.
Now, if they'd only let me use a Mac at work, instead of making me run Excel on this hideous OS...
Obligatory link to the god of Excel programming...

Re:You mean like...
This version seems to work fine with Firefox 1.0. Dated Nov 9.

Re:xml standard??
Apparently the Bookmarks Synchronizer extension for Mozilla firefox (mentioned above) also uses XBEL to store the bookmarks on a ftp server. Bookmarks Synchronizer extension: http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php

Easy...
One option is a firefox extension called Bookmarksftp which basically uploads your bookmarks to a ftp server and downloads them as and when asked (or automattically). A version compatible with Firefox 0.10 is available here
To get the bookmarks in IE bookmarkstofav will do, but theres no proper version for Firefox 0.10

Re:IE User
Another extension that does this and more is External Application Buttons. It puts buttons in your toolbar to open programs you specify, with things like the current url or the page source as parameters. Most people would use it to open pages in IE, view the source in their favorite editor, or just open their email program.
It's very useful for web developers though, too, because you can use it in conjunction with the Multiple IE Versions hack to test your pages in all browsers you're likely to run into. I test all my pages in IE6, IE5.5., IE5.0, Opera, and NS4. I don't always make 'em work, but sure know when they don't :) -
Adblock, Bookmarksync, and Download Mgr Tweak
;i don't know about you, but the first thing i do after i intstall firefox is install adblock (sorry osdn).
;like many slashdotters, i use more than one computer too, so i really like Torisugari's bookmarksync as it allows me to up/download my bookmarks via FTP.
;and as i'm not a fan of pop-up windows, i dig download manager tweak--though it may not qualify as the "schiznit," it is useful.
;as for the snoop, is anyone out there working on a xul version of the shizzolator?

Re:realism
OTOH, you can play from Excel! This link is supposed to have downloads to pacman and space invaders Excel macros, but I've only found the pacman one so far.
The site is in Nihongo, so I can't read it all that well. Anybody want to translate? -
