This was in the New York TimesI wonder why no one mentioned this is a quote from the New York Times? I saw it yesterday syndicated in my local paper.
I'm surprised they didn't even mention the other big players: http://www.grapheety.com , or http://www.plazes.com.
It is going to be a whole new world once the world is casually tagged with stories, and pictures, etc. Where one can explore without even going outdoors. Personally I think Grapheety is the best at that...

Track People Based On What?
Is this anything, like, say, http://beta.plazes.com/?
Ah, another fine 'innovation' from Microsoft. -
Re:Huh?
did anyone mention plazes yet?
Plazes is a grassroot approach to location-aware interaction, using the local network you are connected to as location reference. Plazes allows you to share your location with the people you know and to discover people and plazes around you. It's the navigation system for your social life and it's absolutely free. -
www.plazes.com
And www.plazes.com is building initial database of such beacon point locations. It could have some pretty cool uses, provided that privacy concerns are adequately addressed.

Location irrelevant?
From the article:
And with proliferating access and declining price, the user's physical location has become less important than ever before.
I beg to differ on this point. Since we can change our location -- Wi-Fi allows us to unchain ourselves from our desks -- location can now be used to provide a richer computing experience, as in applications like Placelab, and Plazes.
Chalk another site up on the list to wardrive. -
Create maps of hotspots
Use a service like Plazes. And yes, they offer web services, are friendly developers, and will be probably adding some Semantic Web output in too.
For instance, I'm sitting right here. -
