Re:If self hosting, what to use?
I don't like WordPress like some others here do. I think there's to much of an unjustified hype about it. I consider both b2evolution and Pivot superiour in terms of quality, features and usability. Pivot is database free which can be a big performance plus if you're only powering a single blog. I'd actually suggest you check out Pivot. It's backend is approachable and extremly easy to use and the available templates are a wonderfull groundwork to get rolling with your own style.
Of course all these are GPLd blogtools. If you insist on spending money for a commercial blogtool licence I'd strongly recommend Expression Engine over Movable Type or others.
A third alternative are payed blog services. You might want to check out Squarespace which looks like solid functionality crossed with a designers wet dream. -
Re:Don't write anything you wouldn't want made pub
I'm using pmachine right now. It seems to handle 4 years of entries pretty well.

It's not the end of the worldI don't see a problem with SixApart deciding to charge for MovableType. Taking away certain features that have been free before seems like a dumb decision, but what do I know, it might work out for them. This is not such a big deal as a lot of people portray it to be.
Basically, anyone running MovableType right now has several options:- Pay up for commercial 3.0 license if you fall under new categories that require payments.
- Stay with 2.6.x, which won't require anything on your part (unless some exploits are discovered)
- Switch to alternatives, some with similar licensing, some GPLed.
I've developed and ran sites based on MT, pMachine and WordPress, the site in signature is completely WordPress-based and you can read my impressions in WordPress Testimonials section. I find pMachine the easiest to use, MT the most powerful and WordPress the most attractive with licensing terms and least likely to pull shit like that.
Hopefully this decision by SixApart will move more bloggers and developers into WordPress, which would accelerate improvement. I mean, realistically, MT is not that much better, and even though Wordpress can be rough if you don't know PHP or not willing to play with the code, they seem to be progressing at good speed right now.

i've been playing with pMachine for a couple of weeks to see if i could get to do my bidding as a easy to configure CMS for some web sites i'm designing. over all i've been very impressed with the php/mysql based blogger style script. fairly flexible, great support/documentation, and easy to setup and use. not sure it is as full featured as some of the other mentioned so far, but for what most people need it does the job, especially if your all thumbs when it comes to backend coding like me.
