Re:Always?
Yeah it was right after PCC announced a line of G3s in the same box as the 225 that Apple ended licensing of clones. I still have that machine around; it came with 96M of RAM and, for the time, it cooked. Best thing about PCC though was their advertising; the posters can still be found here.

Power Computing
My Power Tower Pro 225 is still running smoothly with the original 604, and it boots OS 8.5.1 (which kicks OS9's ass on this machine), debian, and BeOS. Not that I use it much with a G4 867 with OS X sitting here in front of me, but it's a killer machine. Power Computing had the coolest adverts too, you can still find them at powerwatch.

Re:most important feature
That is why images like this image exist
(from speech bubble in linked image) "you can take my mac when you pry my cold dead fingers off the mouse"
It's just like a Mac user to need multiple fingers for a single mouse button:-)
Does the apple switch software also help you get used to all the inconveniences of apples, or does it just hope they'll go away?
If apple wants to convert the users who are too dumb to save their important papers (i still think you're cute ellen) to network drives or other secure devices; well they can have them. This whole switch campaign reminds me of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy book where all the useless people (hairdressers, politicians, etc) were sent to a new planet in the first of three spaceships, to go and wait (snicker) for the rest of the world to come by later (wink-wink). -
Re:most important feature"It's a major comfort issue for them. I think that your typical switcher is going to be one of the people that's less technical than a Windows user NOT making the switch, so things like background photos are a big deal in keeping the new computer comfortable and nonthreatening. It's pretty smart of them to have that feature in the migration software."
That is why images like this (non-pr0n, you can safely click this at work) image exist.

Re:In related news...This is funny as shit but it is true in a way. MS can't kill Linux, because there is no "there there." It's a hydra headed beast that keeps popping out of the ground everytime it gets whacked. While they are distracted playing whack a mole with Linux, Apple quietly slurps up desktop after desktop, and then plops the next Walkman on the consumer market as a freakin' afterthought. M$'s "switch" PR fiasco just shows that competing with Apple is not high on their priority list; they don't take it seriously at all. Of course, Apple isn't in any position to undermine them on the enterprise, but as far as Joe Home User goes, the consumer who wants to connect to the internet with no hassle, write letters, chat, listen to tunes, watch DVDs, look at photos, etc., Apple is getting into a great position to win the battle without firing a shot.
I still remember how many people lost faith in Apple after M$ bought some 150K shares of Apple to save their asses after they 180-d on licensing clones. (I still have a PTP 225, one of the best of that era). My only regret is that I never got one of the ad posters for Power Computing that expressed how I felt about people deserting Apple in those dark days.... thankfully the poster is preserved here...

Re:Nothing new
What about the clone manufacturers? Power Computing, and the others, were left out in the cold - it's no wonder why Apple has litle respect outside the art community.
I'm still bitter that the Newton was killed, but not as bitter as the large number of developers, most of them independent, who got the shaft. Worse yet, Apple claimed the project was completely dead, and then refused to sell off the OS to interested (albeit small) parties.
Apple, RELEASE OSX SHELL FOR LINUX! -
SPOILER: Re: Lots of good logos left!
Always liked Power Computing's logo (when they existed before Apple yanked their license).
Not very big, but you can see it here.
