Organized pro-Google trolling campaign on Slashdot
GreatBunzinni [slashdot.org], real name Rui Maciel, has been using anonymous posts [slashdot.org] and sockpuppets to accuse nearly 20 people of being employed by a PR firm to astroturf Slashdot, without any evidence. Using his sockpuppets, he mods up these anonymous posts while modding down the accused in order to filter their viewpoints. GreatBunzinni accidentally outed himself [slashdot.org] as the anonymous troll who has been posting these accusations to every Slashdot story. For example, he wrote the same post almost verbatim, first using his logged-in account [slashdot.org] followed by an anonymous post [slashdot.org] days later. Note the use of the same script and wording.
It turns out GreatBunzinni is actually a 31-year-old C++/Java programmer from Almada, Portugal named Rui Maciel, with a civil engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico and a hobby working with electronics. He runs Kubuntu and is active on the KDE mailing list. Rui Maciel has accounts at OSNews, Launchpad, ProgrammersHeaven, the Ubuntu forums, and of course Slashdot.
Most of the users who Rui targets have done nothing else but criticize Google for something or praise a competitor. Many of them are subscribers who get the first post because subscribers see stories earlier than non-subscribers. After one of Rui's accusations gets posted, the original post receives a surge of "Troll" and "Overrated" moderations from his sockpuppets, while Rui's posts get modded up. Often, additional anonymous posters will appear to give support and receive upmods. At the same time, accused users who defend themselves are modded "Offtopic."

GreatBunzinni
GreatBunzinni has been anonymously accusing almost 20 accounts of being employed by a PR firm to astroturf Slashdot, without any evidence. Using multiple puppet accounts, he mods up his anonymous posts while modding down the target accounts in order to censor their viewpoints off of Slashdot.
GreatBunzinni is actually a 32-year-old C++/Java programmer from Almada, Portugal named Rui Maciel, with a civil engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico and a hobby working with electronics. He runs Kubuntu and is active the KDE mailing list. He has accounts at OSNews, the Ubuntu forums, and of course Slashdot. While trolling Slashdot, he enjoys music by bands like Motorhead, Fu Manchu, Iron Maiden, but lately he's been on a big Jimi Hendrix kick, with some Bootsy Collins on the side. He's also a fan of strategy games like Vega Strike and Transport Tycoon.
Rui Maciel accidentally outed himself as the anonymous troll who has been posting his baseless accusations to every Slashdot story. He wrote the same post almost verbatim, first using his logged-in account and then in an anonymous post submitted days later. Note the use of the exact same terminology and phrasing in both posts.
Feel free to email Rui Maciel at greatbunzinni@gmail.com or rui.maciel@gmail.com, or IM him at greatbunzinni@jabber.org. You can also visit his developer blog at http://rui_maciel.users.sourceforge.net/. Check out his poorly written parsers or his crappy cube apps.
Here is a reply from one of the persons he constantly harrasses and accuses of being a shill:
Well, he's listed me as one of those "shill accounts", so he clearly has absolutely zero proof (although I can't prove that to you, obviously).
I've been posting on slashdot since my first time around at university, so that would be 1999-2000 or something? Maybe 2001 - it might have been in my second year when I got a computer of my own rather than the ones in the lab. My UID is whatever was assigned to me when I made the account, and this is the only account I have.
In other words, I've been around here for a very long time (obviously not as long as some of the 4 digit UIDs), so either Apple/MS/Sony/Facebook whoever has been paying for my to post for over ten years, or they approached me recently and started offering cash (yeah, how very likely, that they'd trust some random guy living in the UK to shill for them. No risk at all that I'd tell anyone about it! no sir!).
In other words, the guy is full of shit, and if he'd been around on slashdot long enough he'd recognise that I've been posting here for a decade.
Still, let the kids have their grand conspiracy ranting and raving. I just wish it didn't reflect so poorly on a site I that I've been a member of for so long. How far it has fallen. Hard to have a proper discussion these days without being modded down or accused of shilling if you dare to say anything that isn't in lockstep with the groupthink.

Re:Trade Wars
I'm not sure - it's been a long time - but I believe that version was TW 2001, the precursor to 2002.
I'm not sure where to find the full game, but I did find the source here: http://www.programmersheaven.com/download/4048/download.aspx
It should probably take a few whole seconds to compile =P

Re:Not a particularly exciting release
Hmm. Perl6 is kind of tempting, although I imagine it'll only be really interesting once people port most of CPAN over to it.
From the Perl6 FAQ:
Will I be able to use Perl 5 modules with Perl 6?
Yes; this will likely be achieved by embedding a Perl 5 interpreter, which is what Pugs, one of the prototype Perl 6 compilers, does now. The syntax for using a Perl 5 module is:
use perl5:Module::Name;
So go ahead, move on to Perl 6 and enjoy yourself.
-
Re:future of perl?
Can Perl 6 access Perl 5 modules while in Perl 6 mode?
Yes, Perl 6 will be able to use Perl 5 packages.

Not sure it's about being hardcoded
First an OT "Howdy!": I think we've crossed paths before on LJ. (lj user=mr_z) Howdy.
:-) BTW, where'd you go to school at? It appears we're from the same neck of the woods. Oh, and I turn 33 in a couple months myself.Swinging back on to the subtopic: Probably one of the larger motivators for Segment + Offset addressing was so that pointers (or, at least the live portion manipulated during loops) could fit in a single 16-bit register. The 8086 was a 16 bit machine, and there was significant advantage to building small applications in a "near" model, and slightly larger applications that rarely dealt with objects larger than 64K.
The 8086 was architected to allow porting 8080 code to 8086 with a minimal translation. This is likely why the 16 bit registers are also addressable as 8-bit H/L pairs. The 8080 H/L registers themselves correspond to the 8086's BX, which explains addressing flexibility heaped on to BX. (As you may recall, the 8080 ganged these two 8 bit registers up to make a 16 bit indirect pointer register.) You might get a larf reading through that XLT86.ASM I linked above--it appears to have been translated by itself! (How's THAT for a test case?)
The segment-offset model also allowed for fixed offsets to be compiled in for "large aggregates" when coding for one of the "large data" models. Large aggregates are things like large arrays and large structs in C. This mode of course requires 32-bit pointers (which are really just seg:ofs pointers, so they only give you a 20-bit address space). This may've been what your professor was thinking of.
I know I've abused the various segmentation models before. I've even used the CS register as an extra data segment in loops that needed to address three separate tables that weren't in the same segment before.
:-)As for SPARC, it just uses a nice, linear, flat 32-bit address space for each task. 32-bit registers make it easy. Even UNIX works that way on 32-bit x86 machines generally. Pointers do, in a sense, get "hard coded," or at least fixed to specific virtual addresses, at final link time. Final link can be at program load time for dynamically-linked binaries, or before that for statically linked binaries.

mixed case?
mixed case file names that work on Windows but not on a Linux webserver
In my experience, mixed case is respected by Linux but not Windows (e.g. if you're testing links on your Windows box, FILE.HTML is the same as File.html; but on Linux they're distinct), which is I assume is what is meant. I use a tiny DOS app called tolow which makes all filenames lowercase, as Windows apps often do capitalise names spontaneously. -
Re:move along.
I had a Phoenix BIOS on one of my older systems that was discussed earlier on slashdot:
http://slashdot.org/yro/01/06/19/2039216.shtml
Basically, it was smart enough that it would detect when the computer was connected to the internet (on any interface, a PCI modem in my case) and then automatically download icons for their services onto the desktop - completely bypassing any software firewalls (ZoneAlarm, in this instance).
Yes, there was an option buried in the BIOS to disable the feature. However, the fact remains that it was able to (without asking permission or alerting a program):
1) identify and use an Internet connection
2) communicate with its host server
3) pop up annoying dialog boxes
4) write changes to the file system
There was obviously enough room on the BIOS to enable this level of functionality - and this was in 2001. I daresay modern chips have plenty of space as well.
Granted, this only worked on Windows 98, and it was "benign" in that it was produced by the parent company. However - it is an established example of what could be done in BIOS if a malicious program was used instead. It would not be trivial, but it would most certainly be possible to create a platform-independent version of the same.
As far as the space issue goes - there is practically no limit how small something can be made if one is clever enough. Most viruses/worms right now are huge - but that is because the programmers are lazy. I don't know how much space the PhoenixNet software occupied in the BIOS - but as an example of what can be done in next to nothing, here is a link to a multi-layer side scrolling starfield - that takes only 24 BYTES of space.

Re:An uneducated guess...
Uhm, additionally?
My post was about Linux & Windows... try keep on the topic I used, please, thanks.
BUT, there is RealBasic & I mentioned it in another reply here, it WILL write one codebase for Win32, Linux, & Macs. I have not tried it, and it is relatively an "infant" still, but imo?
A "baby hercules" really... especially for a 'write once, run everywhere in TRUE std. stand-alone .exe non-interpreted form" from a single codebase type of app on ALL 3 platforms.
Again - I haven't tried it, but like the sound of it already... especially imo, for the future of OS' being more "interoperable" & also having more common apps too!

Borland wrapped up a double play by taking home our Best Linux Development Tool award for Kylix in yet another landslide. Kylix finished with 50 percent of the final vote. I was mildly surprised to see KDE Studio finish as first runner-up with 14.4 percent in our Linux category, slightly ahead of Metrowerks CodeWarrior for Linux with 12.4 percent. Its interesting to note that these three tools accounted for over 75 percent of the votes cast in this category, so obviously these companies are doing something right."

Lots of great code, ideas, articles and such on just about every programming topic and problem.
