Re:Context for moderators
Yes, well indeed, "The lost levels" IS SMB2. The other one is an Arabian adventure called Doki Doki Panic, with sprites replaced. Thus, the Americans were fooled

Re:jesus fucking christ
Who drew that, an anorexic Rob Liefeld?
In case you don't follow American comics, look at this rendition of how Liefeld "broke" Captain America
This reminds me of a hilarious review of the 40 worst Bob Liefeld shortcomings. Scroll down to item 38 "Feet" -
I don't want an apology for Heroes Reborn.
I was, however, surprised to find that Rob Liefeld was now working for Ralph Lauren.
Look at it. Body parts which were obviously mixed and matched from several different mannequins, a spine that has to travel through another dimension to reach her pelvis, and no feet. Throw in a couple belts covered with pouches and you've got every Liefeld girl ever drawn.

Re:I don't get it
Reminds me of http://progressiveboink.com/archive/robliefeld.html
Comics were once for kids and now they're for the adults who loved them as kids but suddenly became adults with no upward motivation. Talented people did and still work on comics and as immature and goofy as any hobby can be, they should be respected and admired for their work. We don't hate comics. I'm a little more bitter about the loss of innocence than Bill, but we both don't appreciate Garth Ennis having Superman demand blowjobs in a comic and expecting people to call him a genius.
People do. People suck.
If you haven't read that article, it's a real hoot.

Re:nostalgic
Thats because the US SMB2 was not a "Mario" game. It was a rebadged game called "Doki Doki Panic".
The FDS game images exist on the net, as japanese reading comprehension needed is nil. And as expected, Doki is tougher.
Here's a link of differences along with the rom link here. No US SMB2 rom to compare. That'd be illegal :P -
Linked article doesn't have correct info
About.com says: Luigi was Papa, and Toad was Mama The Mushroom Kingdom and Progressive boink: Luigi was Mama and Toad was Papa The about.com article seems unreliable http://nintendo.about.com/od/editorials/ss/marioc
o mpare3_2.htm. The various links provided by other Slashdot users all say Luigi was originally the taller, high-jumping Mama http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb2_ddp.shtml and http://www.progressiveboink.com/archive/dokidokipa nic.html. Considering the Progressive boink article has a copy of the ROM included and strong indications that it's author played the Doki Doki Panic version (instead of only looking at screenshots) I'm inclided to give the nod to him. -
Just plain sad
First of all, until Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island this game was questionable "Mario canon", once Shy Guys started showing up in Yoshi's Island did this game truly become part of the series (in terms of mechanics, etc.). Until then, NONE of the Mario games shared any of the mechanics from SMB2/SMBUSA, this includes the differences in the characters. I don't know why the submitter thought that the panel roulette from SMB3 inherits off the slot machines in this game. Those are entirely different features in the game (with SMB2 requiring you to collect coins to power the slot machine and SMB3 giving you a single shot at a panel with the payoff occuring every 3 levels... totally different). The Super Mario Advance series started with retconning SMB2 into the rest of the series (with changes such as adding a scoring system, turtle shells now bounce off obstructions, etc.) and made changes to the rest of the games to accomodate that (SMA2:Super Mario World allows you to play as Luigi in single player mode, complete with SMB2 jumping and other subtle but interesting changes, SMA4:Super Mario Bros. 3 allows you to give Luigi "low gravity" and add SMB2 veggie sprouts to the SMB3 levels, but only if you have an e-Reader. There's also a couple of e-Reader levels in SMA4 that contain SMB2 elements).
Second, as has been mentioned earlier, there a lot better resources for the comparisons. They are more in depth, hit a lot more differences than the About.com article, and are presented a lot better on the web. Here's what I found just linked off the wikipedia entry for Doki Doki Panic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doki_Doki_Panic Which, by the way, has a nice list of all the changes on its own.

When I see stuff like this hit the front page, it's not hard to see why sites like Digg are gaining in popularity. -
Re:Old...
Here is an excellent, and funny, side by side comparison. It's all on a single page with few ads, and it includes a working ROM at the bottom, so you can play Doki Doki Panic on your computer. http://www.progressiveboink.com/archive/dokidokip

Fuji TV's Doki Doki Panic
How would you feel if you actully knew this song really belongs to Doki Doki panic, and the real SMB2 was actually what was much later known in US as "The Lost Levels"?

Re:Bill Waterson
Perhaps, but did Will Eisner depict the violent death of a man on the cover of the sunday funnies? clicky.

There's a sad story up on progressiveboink.com called Illusion of Gaia and my cousin David that's rather relevant.

Re:Minilla and GINO
Rundown on various offspring of Godzilla in different realities & continuities:
The cute, annoying, pudgy son-o-G in the earlier movies was called Minya. I'm not sure where the name Minilla popped up -- I've heard it before, but never seen it in any of the subs or heard it in the dubs. Then again, more recent dubs have done strange stuff like change the names of Mothra's little twin hotties (The Cosmos), so I just may be out of the loop.
The little fat guy was in Godzilla's Revenge AKA All Monsters Attack (Worse than GINO, avoid at all costs), Son of Godzilla, and used as a greatest hits bit of stock footage in a couple others which are also best forgotten.
Godzooky was the often forgotten American cartoon version of son-o-G circa '79. Think Scooby Doo meets Jaques Cousteau with a big green Scrappy Doo. Completely fucking terrifying to recall now, but I loved it when I was 4. I so wanted a remote control that would call big G to do my bidding. I still want Mothra's little twin hotties, though, but I digress.
Perhaps Minilla is the Americanized name for the baby G that we saw in G vs Space G and vs Destroyah? I think his official name was Godzilla Jr in those, although he graduated and became full blown Godzilla in G2K.
A fairly nice perspective on the big green guy's varied histories is here. Another is here but takes itself a lot more seriously. -
