Re:that's great but...will they revoke the world domination patent?
http://pttbt.ca/2007/11/22/amazon-sneaks-world-domination-past-patent-office.html After following that link, at first I thought I was reading something straight off The Onion, that is until I realized there was no humor to be found anywhere. Whew! That's a relief!
Oh, wait... -

Re:Facebook will Adapt
Why shouldn't you be able to have ex co-workers on your "friends" list? Perhaps thinking of them as friends is the problem. They may not be your friends, but they're social contacts. They're people you might want to maintain some level of relationship with, in case your new job doesn't work out, or you're dealing with your old company professionally, or you just want someone to hang out with when you're back in town, or

Someone else posted a satirical story about Facebook implementing multiple profiles for different facets of your life. In the grand tradition of satirical stories that later prove true, this is a feature that Facebook desperately needs to implement, to secure their own viability going forward if nothing else. -
this is old news...
Facebook has already got this figured out... they're testing a new feature that lets you create alternate personalities to keep your various personalities away from each other...

Re:Not news
Actually, it's not so much American politics as it is the will of American corporations... the government apparently got the entire text of the bill from the MPAA...

Re:Obvious Answer!!
That's exactly right! But this year, Earth lost the Curling Galactic Cup because some fool went and fiddled with the game pieces mid-match...

PJ vs SCO...Perhaps the most notable contribution PJ made to the SCO case was when it became clear Darl McBride was directing company strategy based on doing the opposite of what Groklaw contributors wanted...
However, the strategy appeared to backfire when, on September 14, 2007, CEO Darl McBride saw a comment that read, in part: "God, I hope they don't declare bankruptcy to try and get out of this mess."

astroturfing at its worst
Apparently this is just an attempt by a Utah company to increase holiday sales. Sigh.

the microstatus feature is worse, I hear
Personally, I would be more upset about the Microstatus feature they're testing right now... at least you CAN opt out of the ad one...
-
well, the consensus is that there's no consensus
Even the standards body tasked with determining this very point can't decide whether it's Jar Jar or Midi-chlorians, so I don't expect this'll get answered any time soon.

there was more to it...
The real news is that this revision was just a means to an end, and apparently the patent office fell for it...

not all rosy...
The Russians aren't too happy about this new side to NASA... they're trying to distance themselves from the whole idea...
-
follow-up story...
And of course this discovery can't go without political interference... the White House is already condemning the discovery, calling for a ban.

Re:25 million now...
Yes, but only 15 million of them are part of the government program to help the Russian economy...

it's not all fun and games...
There's a protest against capturing rainbows going on today in NY... looks like it's a murky ethical question...

The editors must be USING this service...Microsoft's New MyLifeBits System Ruins Lives
Early beta testers of Microsoft's new MyLifeBits brain-backup service report serious issues with the service, ranging from garbled memories to combined experiences and straight-up memory loss.
"I'd been backing up my brain to their server for about a month when I decided to try downloading the phone number of this girl I liked," said Sean Plymouth, 22, of Denton, MI. "But after I rebooted myself, all I could remember was knitting sweaters by this big-ass fireplace and drinking decaf orange pekoe."
Representatives for Microsoft admitted some user data had been mixed up in the MyLifeBits server due to the flaky NTFS file system. In Plymouth's case, his experiences had been overwritten by those of an 87-year-old grandmother from Wichita, who in turn had strikingly vibrant memories of being a drag queen in San Francisco. -
Big problems already
Apparently they still have bugs to work out... some people are reporting massive data loss in the beta program...
-
there was some confusion...
It seems there was some confusion about what kinds of devices you could install Leopard on, so these numbers may not hold up for long....
-
Follow-up story
Microsoft is displeased at the leak. Apparently it's not a wishlist at all.

Or how about Sulu being a girl?
Plots schmots... if Sulu is really played by a girl, I'm swearing off Trek forever!
Mostly. -
Re:First off...
Exactly! The TFA has a definite agenda... in reality, this is a competitive move by Maxtor. You have to do extraordinary things to stand out in this global economy.

The one hidden in the Mona Lisa has lyrics too. Da Vinci was one busy beaver.
