Re:How much time before this is illegal?
This was from about 1980-85 so it was way before Internet...
It was demonstrated with a 60w light bulb, sure it was not as bright as it would have been if connected to the cord, but the coil was for sure no more than a kilo, mostly copper. The light bulb was connected to the coil and it was demonstrated holding it up in the air, I were allowed to hold it up myself. The closer we got by the power lines the brighter the light. The method is mentioned somewhat here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductor
The one we used looked more like the middle one in the upper picture on that page, but it was bigger, had a finer copper wire, and it was twisted around the ring much more than that one.
The essential point is to get the coil in the same frequency as the your power grid. The one who made the one I saw was a electrician by profession, and knew the math behind it well. Note also that it was done in Europe with 240 volt power, but I believe the grid we was close to had an even greater voltage(?)
This guy claims he got 4kwh from what to me sounds like the same mechanism, though he was an amateur originally believing he got power from the aether... : http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/exclusive/wireless_transformer/
The article is most certainly correct that it is prohibitively expensive if living even a few hundred meters from the power lines. But the electrician who demonstrated it was also the one stating the company could notice the power drop on the line when used extensively, and would then investigate it, find you, and prosecute you.

Re:Exponential rate
FTA The following article was written by my associate, by Paul Noel with some editing and input from me.
Paul (Noel) holds three bachelor degrees and one associates degree, in Business Administration, Computer Science, and Applied Science, respectively. His study included: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Microbiology, Nursing, Business, Statistics, Economics, and Computer Sciences. Paul Noel
Not the best of credentials there.
The site the profile of Noel is posted on had an article about "Free energy" and "former CIA directors" on the front page, so there may be a signal to noise problem there as well. -

Re:Lay off the weed, man!
I dunno, there are stories that when you hold up a tube lamp under a high-voltage-line, it will light up, anyone know anything 'bout that ?
Yes! -
Re:Freedom of speech, or freedom to hate?
I'm now convinced that America has no friends in the middle east- only trading partners controlled by the enemy of us all, the petroleum corporations.

Aluminum can act oddly in the presens of magnetic feels. see this link for information on how it might be able to bens platters.

Re:I think we all know the problem with this
or do you have the mistaken idea that water moves from liquid to vapor by breaking down into its constituent parts?
No, I'm not an idiot, and I'm not talking about evaporation.

Re:no mention of bio-diesel
Thanks. I've added the following sentence to the article, per your comment:
"Converting diesels to run on veggie oil gained momentum in 2005, and will likely gain many more advances in 2005; but it will probably be a decade before our highways smell like French fries."

Re:Pole Reversal?Yes it is (both). This article goes into some speculative detail. Upshot is, possibly damaging a shed load of electrical devices, disruption to electrical grids, etc....
Could be interesting times (mental note: buy manual tin opener)

I think Slashdot is being had
This is the third post I recall by Stirling D. Allan recently, the others being
The first in that list featured complete crackpot pseudoscience. The second seems to be of dubious scientific merit. A quick look at Mr. Allan's website shows they are involved with a number of other areas of pseudoscience (or to put it less kindly, scientific hoaxes) such as "magnet motors" and "zero point energy" (as an energy source). That together with the two other submissions he's made leads me to doubt the validity of the information in these "stories". The main problem, however, is that these are not balanced informative articles, but rather they seem to be little more than ads seeking venture capital. Furthermore, it looks like Slashdot is soon to become little more than a mouthpiece for opensourceenergy.org at this rate.

Correlation?
Is there any relationship between this phenomenon and the Earth's magnetic fields weakening?
I read that the Earth is due for a reversal of its poles.
While human activity on the planet is undoubtedly contributing to global warming, are there other forces at work here that may be larger than the sum of the individual parts? -
Pah! Thats nothing take a look at this...
A man in England has some different ideas concerning the fluorescent tube.
Seems kinda dangerous - not something that you should try at home... -
The author also wrote about alien technology!
Not to bash this solar lighting system or anything, but the author of the article is a bit of a nutcase-- she wrote a whole article about how we're all doomed because of the impending Magnetic Field Revesal, and another article about a scientist was killed in a conspiratorial fashion because of his "new energy" discoveries, which apparently came from space aliens.
So take this article with a big grain of alien-free salt. -

Re:cold fusioncheck out one of the decmber 2004 issues of new scientist. cold fusion is real, its just still n lab deveolpment and my not be scalable for large scale use....
Cold fusion is sufficiently real to the powers-that-be that the principal expert in the field was mysteriously murdered by a mugger in rural New Hampshire. Lot of violent muggings up there, let me tell you. Then the man accused of murdering him was murdered.

Other fuel-cell projects ...

Re:Prize for Fuel Cells?
I feel someone should offer a nice prize for creating an efficient and clean way of producing hydrogen for fuel cell technology.
Does this count? -
Efficiency, and alternativesActually, they're not using fuel cells--they're just burning the hydrogen in an internal-combustion engine.
I discovered that some folks are tried to split water thermally using solar energy to heat the water. Check out http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2004/07/09/

Re:who remembers
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105788/
I have been following many developments of rather exotic alternative energy and free energy theories and technologies (vaporizers, water-based fuels, zero-point energy and magnet-powered motors, cold fusion, radiant energy, antigravity/electrogravity machines, Tesla-inspired devices, DePalma-machine variants, Bearden-inspired devices, Searl-effect generators, you name it) over the last year and half. To say that many of the people working on these are paranoid is an understatement, mailing-lists associated with these are always laced with some of the wildest conspiracy warnings and alarmism.
Occasionnally some of them would shut down their website, hide plans and machines and prototypes and make themselves discreet for a time, for various reasons (including strangers taking pictures of their work through their windows at night). And a couple of them I haven't heard of since. And news like this ain't helping. It makes one wonder... -
Why not allow cutting edge technology?
Jimbo, Considering the high calibur of your encyclopedia generally speaking, I am disapointed that you shun alternative energy technologies. You will not allow such topics as magnetic motors, gravity motors, etc, even though there is a growing body of claims and even evidence. It seems quite cowardly to not tackle these topics just because they are sometimes laughed at by the mainstream. Why will you not allow such bleeding edge topics to be addressed, identified as such? Re: end of wiring
here a picture of it being done Field of light
We used to do that as kids. Not nearly to that scale, though. We'd get a handful of fluorescent tubes and play light saber underneath the power lines. Of course, we'd eventually end up hitting them against one another too hard and they'd break. Protective eyewear was a must. The tubes were easy to come by. There was an industrial park nearby, and there'd always be some in a dumpster behind one of the many office buildings. The fact that they'd flicker a lot made them look even cooler.
