I suppose Apple needs the rabid fanbase as they are advertisers that pay the company for the privilege. Maybe Apple should even thank them every now and then for keeping the company afloat for so many years.

Speaking in evolutionary terms, doesn't the survival rate of a species increase with rapid, frequent, and earlier reproduction?
In a massive die-off, it will be the offspring of the poor who are better suited for survival. They have a more diverse gene pool, and they have sheer volume on thier side.
That's the way it would work in the animal world, at least...I know humans can [somewhat] alter the dynamics of survival of the fittest, but in a true die-off scenerio, would wealth/power/access to healthcare be enough? The influenza epidemic of 1917 comes to mind.

Radio Shack went downhill when they made Cellphone and Satellite TV service their primary sales vehicles. They ought to get back to their roots...providing components for tinkerers. I know there's not as much potential profit in this, but if they were to partner with the editors of Make Magazine, they could become the new hope for the home brew crowd.
Example: In this month's Make Magazine...there's an article on how to receive free (not illegal) satellite channels by using inexpensive materials. Radio Shack should be the source for this material for those who don't want to scrounge!
I know this has been a huge plug for Make Magazine...but for goodness sake, when I used to need some obscure part, I knew it could be had cheaply at the Shack...now you have to order a lot of parts.
Sticking one's head in the sand does not make the issue disappear.
It's a nice ideal to live and work in an apolitical world...unfortunately the reality gets in the way. Unchecked, it will ultimately threaten a person's ability to write and publish free code. (the recently proposed legislation outlawing free software in France, for example)
How about doing a review from the perspective of someone who has never used a computer before - then lets see which one is easier to use (hint: the answer will be Windows XP by a massive margin).
Why not throw Mac/OSX into the mix as well?
I think once you remove the fanboism from all sides, you'll find that there's no perfect solution -- each has room for improvement.
Why aren't car engines designed like modern train engines? I believe most trains are propelled by elecric motors which are in turn powered by diesel engines, which turn generators.
Why doesn't this idea scale down to automobiles? Is it the continued dependence on fossil fuels / generation of greenhouse gases, or is there some point where the size/weight/power ratio no longer makes sense?
Impossible to consistently implement on any level other than that of the individual.
For example, I have steadfastly decided not to:
1) Shop at Wal-Mart; 2) Buy any music CD; 3) Use any Microsoft product on my personal computer.
I'm not proclaiming this as a way of saying "Look at me!" I've just made a conscious decision that as a consumer, I have a choice where my money goes, and I'm making that choice.
If enough people feel the same way as me, they may choose to make similar choices and the market will respond. If not, I still feel that my choices are right for me.
