Re:It's not like they risk anything.
I understand that they take up a very dangerous mantle
They like to create that perception, but it's really not the case, they rarely make the top 10 dangerous jobs. For example, this list pegs them at number 18 with 11.7 deaths per 100,000. And it's not getting shot that causes that danger, the most common cause of on-duty police officer deaths is traffic accidents. I worked for many years in a much more dangerous job but nobody had parades and 21 gun salutes when one of us died.

I don't think he could fit in one that size.

Fat Ass Republican
When I read about this creep fondling his foster daughters, and then trying to finagle a censorship of the story through copyright law, I said to myself, "I'll bet this guy's a fat ass Republican".
Confirmed:

That's a whole lotta love
Holy crap. I didn't realize that the Streisand Effect was where you suffocate your bed partner. Props to the Rapid City Journal for using "Rapist" as the first word in the headline of their story about his copyright claims. Since he is a convicted rapist, it's a matter of public record and totally OK say that Ted Klaudt is a rapist, right?

Re:Pre-Emptive Strike? Here's the deal, man: I start off with the assumption, based on hard experience, that all conservatives are liars, especially when it comes to the GOP.
And yet htis gets modded interesting? yea this is not a troll/flamebait. I love it when Democtrats and Republican knee padders point to eachother and cry *liar* voting for a 3rd party this time around its great to see.
You point out something with a little more substance, we'll talk.
Ok put your knee pads back on cause I have something for you and I know your going to have to find a way to ignore/spin it.
South Dakota, Dems Paid $12,000 to South Dakota Vote Fraud Figure
The South Dakota Democratic Party reportedly paid the person at the center of a growing voter fraud investigation more than $12,000 in the last three months, according to the Rapid City (S.Dak.) Journal which revealed that the figure is shown in Federal Election Commission (FEC) records from July, August and September.
The FEC records revealed that Becky Red Earth-Villeda got 18 paychecks totaling $12,867 allegedly for administrative costs or voter drives. One of the checks in the amount of $3,500 was racked up as travel expenses.
Sarah Feinberg, indented by the Journal as a Democratic Party spokeswoman explained that contractors are paid by the number of voter registration cards and absentee ballots they collect.See, I AM a Democrat, an active one
No fsck? really? I never would have guessed by the wear mark on the floor where you, ummm, assume the position for your party.
and I have NEVER heard a fellow Democrat encourage vote fraude by either word or deed. I HAVE heard Republicans defend it.
Oh well if a democratic partison says so who am I to argue..

Re:Mirrors and being self aware.
One thing that bothers me about warning tones; when I'm pissed at something (frequently while reading the news online) if I start swearing to myself Pook thinks it's directed at her. I have to give her extra attention. Bandit doesn't seem to care. (Tir never seemed to care either, and neither did Mouss, the female I had for a year after Tir - she died of feline leuk
:( ) But then, living alone as I mostly have, I tend to be rather, um, vehement *cough* when reading the news online and other crap during my evenings. I do wish it didn't bother Pook, tho. She does get a lot of extra attention at some times, which is all I can do...
Very much agreed with your analysis of Pavlov and a lot of other research, it more or less parallels my own thoughts. The (few) studies I've read I've found hilarious, because they don't seem to describe the animals I have experiences with. I do suspect that with cats, at least, the behavioral aspects are probably more to do with experience than dogs are, maybe 10% or more. Cats seem to exhibit much more variation in behavior, anyway. Perhaps in another twenty years I'll have some comparable data regarding felines - I keep a pretty good journal.
Parrots; aye! :) That link is a good one, seen it before. As Heinlein would say, it's a "funny always". Birds are one pet I'll never get into, however. I'd have to keep them in armored cages :) and I'm not much for caging any animal unless absolutely necessary. [ Caveat - around here - the Black Hills - my cats stay indoors unless I'm around to watch them. We have mountain lions here! They did finally get that ML; sad, tho - the local paper here headlined it "Killer Cat caught" - 'Killer cat'?? - not like it had a taste for people; although it certainly wasn't scared of 'em - I'm torn on that one ]
I'm ashamed to admit that I've read very little Vance. Sigh. So many books, so little time...
Cheers!

Re:This is a non-story
Without a license, you can't get insured and screw with rates. If you get caught without a license, you get fined or worse which would give reckless drivers incentive to slow down and pay attention.
If these people have already had their license suspended, then they probably don't have insurance anyway. I don't see a fix here.
I work for a local law enforcement agency. Just 2 days ago, a guy was busted by state highway patrol doing 65 in a 40. License had already been suspended because of excessive infractions, no insurance, no valid tag. They guy's in the county lockup right now, but he's not going to be there long.
The problem is something that's not going to be fixed easily. If someone can come up with something short of euthanasia for fixing it, I'd (and I'm shure many others) would be interested in entertaining it.
Here's my "discusting piece of law enforcement" link that stands as just a little more proof that this isn't going away: The first part of the story The rest of the story.
100 days for *KILLING* someone.

Re:still need ...An article describing some sc/ramjet technology. For the impatient:
The scramjet propulsion system uses different kind of technology than traditional rockets. Instead of carrying both fuel and oxygen to ignite, the scramjet uses oxygen in the atmosphere. To get the oxygen to ignite the fuel, it needs to take the oxygen into its combustion chamber at extremely high speeds.

So how long before...
So, how long will it be before warflying is illegal or requires a permit. Here's a funny/sad/true story about a guy who recently got into a lot of trouble for hunting from an airplane.

Re:I like this kind of data collection
I think a far more common approach to the 'having to watch distastefull commercials during dinner'-problem is to turn off the tv and talk.... atleast rather than you spending dinner all bitter and sour..
For some families, talking during dinner leads to sour bitterness, in which case, it's better to have the TV on. And then of course there are all those americans living alone: Elderly people living alone comprise close to 30.5 percent of all older households, with women accounting for almost 78 percent of all elderly people living alone. (AARP's Public Policy Institute, "Elderly People Who Live Alone" Fact Sheet) and "...there are 27.2 million householders who live alone." (Hooray for the internet, the most powerful library of the world has ever seen. Alexandria can blow me.)

Re:IronyYou speak as if you speak for the Forest Service ("Our mission"), so I'll say "you" when I really mean them, not you personally, OK?
1) Your mission statement should be on your home page, or at least linked there, not buried under your "jobs" page.
2) If you really mean that "Listening to people" line, then why this proposed change? And why attempt to "put a torch to citizens' rights to challenge federal agencies' land-use decisions"?
3) If you really mean those "Protecting" and "practice good stewardship" lines, then why promote "salvage logging" when it's been shown to cause more harm than good?
-
Re:IronyNo, you haven't been paying attention. Visit the U.S. Forest Service's web page. Even their About Us page doesn't state their Mission Statement, if they have one. Under this Administration, their goal -- as is the goal of every Federal Department -- is to maximize profits for contributors to the Republican Party. The Forest Service cares not about saving trees, but cutting them.
Flamebait? Maybe, but it's true.

Horta EggsNSF has proposed building a new neutrino detector and National Underground Physics Laboratory in the soon to be closed Homestake gold mine at the 7400' level. In addition, other experiments not related to horta-research could be performed.
