Soldier of Fortune
Training for real warfare -- gorilla warfare. -
whaaaaa?
Have they gone mad? How can I possibly bring myself to shell out for a new Quake title that Carmack himself didn't lovingly craft with his own hand and sick, twisted brain?
Heresy, I say! -
Re:Not true geeks...
That's very interesting. I'm a game developer myself, and this is actually a huge part of the education I give to people when they ask me about getting into game development: Making games is not the same as playing games.
It actually takes a lot of abiity to become a game programmer. In five years I have 2 Bachelor's degrees (BA in Spanish Lit and BS in Computer Science) as well as a minor (in Business). PLUS I had to fit in a healthy amount of game playing in there (*cough*) to keep up with the state of the art. ;)
I imagine this is a side effect of the game industry getting more attention. More people wanting in, expecting a well-paying, high profile job. These people will inevitably be disappointed since those jobs are rare, and the "cool" job of coming up with game ideas doesn't really exist, or is held by upper management in most cases.
For people interested in getting into the game industry, here's a great website that details a lot of good advice about breaking in: http://www2.ravensoft.com/getajob.htm

Get a job for Quake 4!
Found this over at Raven!

Re:Why?
1) Unreal Tournment 2003, Enemy Territory, Quake3, Neverwinter Nights, etc. And much, much more with Wine such as Soldier of Fortune 2.
2) Grip, VERY good CD Ripping app. Will auto download CDDB, run the encoder of your choice, etc. As for raytracing Povray can do a lot too, but you just need a good modeler, such as Kpovmodeler. As for a one click installer, check out RPMs or RedHat's Package Management System, looks just like Install Shield.
3) KDE,Gnome, etc. You DO know that they can be themed to look just like the crappy Windows GUI too don't you? -
Re:This still doesn't make John Romero cool
Untill Doom III I would agree with you. Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 were simply engines that Raven built good games on. (and hopefully American McGee now....)
But it seems id has renewed its intrest in creating great game play. Grahm was hired and is basically filling the void that Romero left behind.
Having seen the Doom III leak, I have hope. And if id lets me down in the single-player arena, I know that multi will rock and Raven will once again save the day. -
Re:Just Wonderful
No, there's too much focus on teamwork and happy shit like that.
For murder, you want SOF2. -

How To Get A Job In The Gaming Biz
So You Want to be a Game Designer?
(At least two of these articles have sections pertaining to programmers.)
A common thread throughout the articles seems to be that you should know someone who already works in the gaming biz.
If you have been succesful in finding a job, read this:
You've Been Given a Job Offer! (Let's Try to Avoid Getting Screwed)
plus a quote:
The job title "Game Designer" is probably the biggest misnomer in the industry. Everyone seems to want to be a game designer...the idea guy or "think tank" behind every aspect of a game. These jobs do not exist. The only way to become a game designer is to do one of two things: Start and finance your own game company, or work in the games industry for several years and work your way up to the presidency or development directorship of an existing game company. Game companies have more than enough ideas, more then they would ever have time to produce. Game development is a team effort that requires input from every developer on the project. Unless you're an industry legend with a long track record of shipping successful titles, it's impossible to obtain a "Game Designer" position.

Pseudorelevant issue....
On the issue on cheating in online gaming, in my experience with a Q3 based FPS (STV:EF), I've gotten attacked with claims of cheating because of someone else's ineptitude. Maybe they had a laggy connection, and I seemed better than I was, better than I should have been, but they would not let up with their claim that I must be a cheater. Lame.

A good introduction
Almost forgot - while only a guide, this is a very good guide to getting a job in the industry, it covers more than just programming options, and is written by people who know what they're talking about.

Re:To respond to both of you:I'm going to act on these ideals very soon. I'm already engaged in a motion picture boycott (except for Star Trek movies; my mother always drags the entire family along, but hey, why see a Star Trek movie or episode when you can play it out?)
Also, I might be considered a Transcendentalist hybrid, since I'm so engaged in the news. If Thoreau was alive now, he'd be an avid Slashdot member for sure. He'd have opinions on the DMCA, the DeCSS issue, Microsoft's sales practices, and so on.

Re:Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
I E-mailed them asking for a port to Linux (it's based on Quake III and all), but I never got a reply.
Here's your reply:
; 6) Will Elite Force be released for other platforms? Mac? Linux? PSX II? DreamCast?
Other versions of the game including Linux, PlayStation II and DreamCast are entirely dependent on the success of PC version of the game. Financial wisdom suggests that waiting to see that the game is well received and selling well is a logical step before charging into multiple contracts and serious financial commitments. If the game is financially successful and shows signs of a solid launch, the likelihood of ports to other platforms increases exponentially. Keep an eye on your local gaming news site for announcements after Elite Force has been in release for a few months.
