  1. Not stable for me yet... on Ubuntu 9.04 Released · · Score: 1

    I've spent the last week trying to get the RC working. I started with fresh install and ext4/encrypted home directory. It appeared to work but locked within an hour. (hard lock sometimes with caps/number lock flashing)

    I noticed they had a problem with deletes in ext4 and so reformatted to ext3. Then I got kernel oops with what appeared to be the encrypted home directory stuff. So I turned that off as well and still was getting lockups. After days of reading bugs with the kernel 2.6.28, nvidia 180 drivers, and the intel 4965 wireless, I've still not solved the problem. It's hard to troubleshoot as there are no logs and the system is dead even to sysrq commands. I did see an issue with the hpet having problems, so I tried the other modes such as jiffies. Even used noapic/etc trying to get a stable system. Nothing seems to work. Funny thing is that 8.04 and 8.10 were rock solid on my system.

    In many cases, running firefox and trying to watch flash video causes the lockups. Sometimes in less than five minutes.

    If however, you disable extents, then yes you can mount it as ext3. And as you know, ext3 can be mounted as ext2 without the journaling.

    I agree that the win32 ext2 drivers need updating. I would hate to lose access to ext partitions for dual boot systems.

    Before everyone gets all worked up about the great access time (~0.1-0.3ms) and great read times, consider this...

    Two issues plague SSD are write times and write wear. Just like thumbnail drives, they will "wear out" with use. Most of the newer models have wear-leveling and that reduces it greatly. But it's still an issue. Don't take the MFG's MTBF specs for face value. Then you have the huge issue with write times. Many reviews show real-world speeds of 3-4 times SLOWER then a typical 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD.

    You may think that isn't much, but it can be. Things like moving files around, compiling software (Gentoo :), or just using swap space, will show huge hits in performance.

    That said, if your reasons are for battery life and/or durability, then the cost may be justified. However, at the current cost per GB ~$10-15/GB, it's just not worth it in my opinion.

The other two cores are not used at all. Multi threaded programming isn't easy, and these quickie games are almost never designed to take advantage of threads and different cores. Hopefully it will change as more are more people get these processors. Simple things as putting AI,UI,and game logic on different cores would make a huge difference.

  8. Seems they forgot a few things on DNS Rebinding Attacks, Multi-Pin Variant · · Score: 3, Informative

    I did RTFA, and it seems to me they made an oversight in the fact that most ISP/corp sites use a caching DNS server. A repeated lookup to the same domain will return the cached result. Their POC depends on the client doing another lookup and getting a different result. This would attack would depend on the client being able to the attacker's DNS.

    Now they do say that the attacker DNS returns more then one A record for each request. But they are ignoring the fact that the serial number of the zone would have to change for a refresh to not get cached. And even if they did create a new zone record for each visit, with the target's IP (seems unlikely), all the servers back to the client would need to respect it. Again, my ISP Qwest, has a bad habit of ignoring the TTL in my zone files.

    example 1:

    target lookup (T0) -> www.attacker.com
    www.attacker.com -> 192.168.0.1

    target lookup (T1) -> www.attacker.com
    ISP/site cached reply -> 192.168.0.1 (attack failed)

    Example 2:
    target lookup (T0) -> www.attacker.com
    www.attacker.com -> 192.168.0.1

    target lookup (T1) -> www2.attacker.com
    attacker's ISP cached reply -> 192.168.0.1 (attack failed again)

    The only case I can see this working if the zone records contain an IP for some third party source that they want to try and abuse. So say www2.attacker.com points to 10.0.0.1 and that number is static in their zone record. Which appears to be much less efficient zombie scan with IP spoofing.

    And finally, this is all dependent on the attacker tricking the client into loading Flash/Java/Javascript from their box. Another win for noscript.

    Bottom line here is that there was evidence of child porn found locally at the address connected with that IP. So it's not really "using an Open WAP defense" as it would seem from summary. If they found nothing to collaborate the on-line transmissions at his address, then it would be more believable someone else could have done it.

    You see, this issue just brings into light the whole concept that is so bad about publisher over-the-net supplied games. Let's compare this to a regular CD/DVD/etc game. Lord of the Rings BFE2 just came out with a major patch that completely changes unit times/strengths, etc. It's almost like playing another game. Not getting into a debate of if it's good or bad, but if **I** decided I don't want to apply it then I can keep playing. As long as others out there don't like it too, I can even play on-line. In CS:S, we are screwed if we don't update. You can't play period. That not only gives steam control over when and where you play, but your game experience. Don't like what they've done now, too bad.

    Who knows how long they will continue to support HL2. But without their auth/update servers, the game will not work. I won't be buying anything like this again for that very reason. Anyone else notice this is the new trend. Even MS is moving toward this model. Complete control, and I'm not going to give it. Voting with my wallet, suggest you do the same too.

    It depends on the game.

    I do droks runs in guild wars for a few reasons. I've not only been the runner, but been ran by others myself. In guild wars the lvl cap is 20. You are free to change your secondary class as much as you want. But you cannot change your primary class. This means there are several other builds you could try out. However, before Factions, it took a very long time to get where the good stuff was. Droks armor is highest in stats (not best skin/but AC rating), plus the skills trader has more advanced skills.

    If you've already played the game through say 4-5 times then doing it again and again for each new character type is boring and painful.

    And before factions, we were limited to 4 characters per account. Which meant you had to delete your old ones before trying out different classes. Guild wars isn't a level grinder like most other RPG games. After you hit 20, that's it. You just focus on better skill combos and different areas. Why make the players go through the entire noob areas again?

    If you look at factions, this is what the game devs did. They made it so you can level up to 20 in two days with 3000+ XP quests. In GW1 it took week(s) at 250-500XP per quest.

    And finally, running is a quick, not always easy, way to make some money. They have nerfed all the good farming areas and made it so money is much harder to aquire. Granted green/gold drops help, it's a pain trying to do player-player trades. In one droks run I make 10-15k in 35 minutes. When a full suite of nice looking (15k) armor cost me 150k it's still hard work.

    And if you're wondering, playing with skills and builds is what it's all about. I just got my ele to do 2,672 damage in one spell hit. (4x-668 damage to lvl 5 guys). =)
