I'm working on it...
Believe it or not, there's a small business who recently hired me to get them out of the mess that is FileMaker 5.0 -- if that, I think the majority of their machines run 4.0. I basically told them that to recreate their FileMaker database as anything relational (which they understand and want) will take about the same amount of time, whether I do FileMaker 8.0 or something else. Chances are, I'll take something like Glom or Rekall, maybe even Gnu Enterprise, create their database in that, and extend it.
I don't know if it'll do taxes, but it will do everything else. And I'll probably GPL all my work, too.
This is what Open Source is all about -- when you figure a system like this will probably cost you several thousand dollars anyway, why not pay a programmer to do it for you? It may end up cheaper, and it certainly means you can hire other contractors to mess with it later.

Tie yourself up now
If you still haven't tied yourself into Access proprietary formats, language and practices (we told you so it would be a bad idea), you can tie yourself now to KDE and Rekall: http://www.rekallrevealed.org/
Bonus-points for those who manage to tie themselves up in this _and_ MS Access or some other obscure format without having a path of migration ready. ;-) -
Rekall is not bad
Rekall is not a bad database frontend with Access like style, but that can be used with a range of database backends (mysql, postgresql, etc). Like other Kompany products its is even dual licensed under the GPL. See RekallRevealed.Org

Re:How's the database?
rekall
Now get to work, they need help :) -
Rekall Revealed
I think you were meaning Rekall Revealed - the open-source (GPL) version of Rekall.
-
Re:I've been waiting for this
There are a few:
* Gnu Enterprise (never used it)
* Rekall (Python based)
* pgaccess (TCL/Tk based) -
Rekall
Yes, there is. The commercial version is available for Windows.

Re:AbiWord is good
Rekall is a very mature replacement for MS Access. It was commercial software once but has been since been open sourced. I am not sure whether it can import Access files yet - OTOH the data itself would be easy to import.
And then there is also Kexi, which looks very promising and will be part of the next KOffice release. -
Re:http://cocoamysql.sourceforge.net/
Rekall is available under the GPL:

Goooood Question!!!! What about Rekall?
A while back, Rekall - in conjunction with a sql database - looked like a potential open-source replacement for FileMaker and Access.
Has anyone here successfully ported a FMP database to Rekall + {MySQL|PostgreSQL|etc}?

Rekall Revealed GPL
Rekall Revealed (GPL verson of thekompany's rekall product) can do all that, connect to PgSQL and MySQL, while using python as the language backend. Very nice, *and* Free Software.

Re:Man, the Bottleneck
Abiword is a good, fast word processor. Something like a full featured wordpad.
Frontends to MySQL, there are many. If you like MSAccess, rekall mimics everything, even its evilness. There is a new kde project, kexi aiming for the same objective.
The tools are there, the problem is that the ones who need them, like MSOffice.

Re:Programmable GUI
Rekall is compatible with PosgreSQL.
-
Re:some stuff
I hear rekall is trying to fill that role. Check it out and see if it meets your needs.

Rekall might help
-
RekallRekall is another Access like Frontend that works with MySQL and a few others.
They got shafted by TheKompany and need some help so download it a send a few bucks their way if you like it. Runs on Linux and Windows.
-
Re:Yes!Yes. Rekall or here for free binaries is exactly what you want. It can use Xbase/MySQL/PostgreSQL and other formats.
It's just like Access, except with an multi-window interface instead. It's also extensible with Python.
-
Re:How to make money giving it away for 'free'.
- You just need to give out enough of your product to make the public want the stuff you need to pay for.
Another example is The Kompany. They had this tactic before and released some products that allowed them to sell add-ons. After some fumbles, they are back at it again with Rekall as this site shows and as discussed here.

Re:If it's gpl'd
If it's gpl'd where do we get the source code? I would like to download it.
Right here
