    Since iRobot has strong MIT roots and congratulated the first hackers who modified their Roomba. Later, iRobot released full specifications for the original Roomba and more hacking efforts bloomed.

    Oh, and as for the government? This is the same government which released BRL-CAD and NASA World Wind, and sponsored the development of the Reiser filesystem and OK WebServer (kicks Apache in the ass for dynamic sites) among countless other open source projects. Oh, and heard of SELinux? From the big bad NSA? This is all irrelevant though; the DoD did not design this vehicle, iRobot did. iRobot owns the code, not the government

    Nice links! Here- I cleaned them up since Slashdot tends to add random spaces to posted URLs for some reason, and I formatted them as anchors. I noticed the random spaces don't appear if you remove the "http://"... MOD PARENT NOT ME ("No Karma Bonus" checked, not karma whoring)

    ...all of this Roomba jiggery-pokery is fine, but when it comes to intelligent floor cleaning, nothing beats the RoboSweep.

    According to the recent dissection we saw on slashdot, the only motor in a Roomba turns the wheels. This this is a broom, not a vacuum.


    Actually. it's the robosweep that has only one motor.

    I took apart my Roomba and found five motors in it, One is the vacuum impeller, one for the main brush, one for the little side brush (small, but very important), and the two independantly driven wheels. I've started hooking up a microcontroller to mine, and have gotten it to drive, so far(about an hour with a scope and an hour soldering so far)

    It really does work well on carpet though. I have carpet and tile and it works better than my old vacuum, and it doesn't hurt my back like the "real" vacuum did. (I have two roombas, one to use, the other to take apart)

    I also heard that HSN has had the new models on, if you want to see them work. I think they are selling them with remotes.

    People have mentioned the Trilobyte from electrolux... it's not cheap... 1000 (about $1600USD)

    It isn't quite the same as running Linux, but we have hacked a Roomba to run Java. We desoldered the micro on the Roomba board and hooked it up to a Javelin Stamp instead.

    Pics here. It's kind of slow. Being slashdotted is not a good way to discover that your ISP does bandwidth limiting :-(.

    Once the vacuuming brushes are removed the Roomba is much quieter and I am sure that battery life at least doubles. Chris.
