Here's the argument I never hear anyone mention, including the RIAA.
I have a lot of old vinyl records, probably close to six hundred. A lot of those are records from the sixties and seventies, and are very unlikely to be released ever again. Believe me, I think I'm he only person in the world who still owns records of "Burns & Schreiber" (extra points to those who know who they are); they are not likely to re-release those recordings.
So, eventually, I'll get down to ripping them from my turntable (not used in about eight years) to MP3s, and then I'l have the choice to put them on a CD, an iPod, whatever. I paid the artists, these are my archives.
So, let's say I come across one of these songs that are not available to the public anymore because they're not released. I download this song because it's much easier than doing the ripping myself. Have I committed a crime? I paid the artist, I have an original pressing. But my expert friends tell me that I have now violated the DMCA because I did not make the copy myself. But who could tell? An MP3 is a copy of a song, and (all technology aside) it would be indistinguishable from any other copy of itself; that's the crux of the whole problem, isn't it? So if my copy and the downloaded copy are the same, then haven't I really just acquired my "archive" copy? I paid the artist before, who cares how I "generated" my archive?
When all old recordings are available online from the fat-bastard recording companies, I will then pay them their due. But until that time, I will find copies of the music I already own, whether it's downloaded, ripped, or sent to me from a time warp.
No, the change is immediate. I understand the S-turn strategy, but this looked like the shuttle was pointed one way, and the smoke trail came out from a different way. The shuttle was not designed to take airflow over the side of the craft. The S-turns still point the relative bottom of the craft into the forward wind or motion.
As I disclaimed, this is just my opinion of what it looked like.
On one of the video tapes (shown on FOX, I believe), it showed the shuttle flying normally, nose pointed to the bottom of the TV screen. The camera zooms out, and you can see the dot of the shuttle and then the smoke trail starts. This seems to be the actual moment of the start of the disaster. The trail comes out towards the side of the screen, although the shuttle appeared to be oriented in a different direction. This (to me) implies that the shuttle was travelling sideways, which we all know is not what it was designed to do. I imagine that if that really is what occurred, they had no chance.
President Bush: As a taxpayer and a voter, I strongly urge the U.S should continue the Space Program, including the Shuttle program. Otherwise, we're just a bunch of sad primates without the nerve to put our feet in the water.
My condolences to the families and friends of the Shuttle Columbia's crew.
I think it's great that Tivo is heading towards HDTV compatibility. It shows a move towards the more sophisticated technology that we are capable of.
So, then, why did they disable the serial port on my Tivo with the latest O/S upgrade, forcing me to keep using the stupid I/R wands, making it impossible to channel surf with the Tivo remote? Hmmm....?
This has been out for a while now. It's not even credit-card-sized. It's a little chip about the size of fingernail that sits under the skin, and all that has to be done to get the info is set a little RF wand on it. Then all the info like medical history, address, name, breed...
I've moved between companies, and usually I'm "informed" at my new company that any code I write is the sole property of the company, either by the way of an employment agreement or contract.
However, I also don't like re-inventing the wheel, so I keep copies of my code so I can go back and reference it. I can't keep all that in my head; that's what hard disks are for. Some solutions are specifically for whatever company, but something like a log-parsing script is going to be useful pretty much anywhere. I keep a lot of "engine" routines so that I can quickly get things up to speed in my new company as needed.
So at what point do I say what is mine and what is the company's? I mean, I wrote my first Perl print statement a few companies back. Does that mean I'm not ever allowed to use it again? How many different solutions are out there? Perl might be about always-more-than-one-way-to-do-it, but I'm only on the planet for a limited time....
Perhaps Spinal Tap had something to do with the satellite's resurrection. Reportedly, the satellite started brodcasting "Tonight, I'm Going to Rock You (Tonight)"....
Subtle colors don't do well with me, and I imagine that, unless we start having Peter Max design our money, the colors are going to lean more towards the pastel end of the spectrum.
ObCanadian: I'm married to a Canadian, and I hear this rant about the mono-chromatic money *all* the time. To me, Canadian money looks like I should be using it to put houses on Park Place....
While I believe that most spammers should be burned at the stake, the RBL and other "volunteer" blacklist agencies can prove to be as troublesome as the spammers themselves. We recently moved our mail server from a poorly-designed product to a sendmail-based server, yet we're still having mail rejected from some external sites because of our previous server's "open-relay" problems. Even though we have been clean and sober for three months plus, we are still have mail rejected by sites using RBL, Osirusoft, and others.
These so-called "volunteer" agencies lean a bit too much to the extreme, and it is frequently difficult to clear your name from their lists, or the problems that some sites create because they have very outdated lists. As such, we have chosen not to use the RBL for that very reason; many of our clients and their domains might be on those lists unwittingly just because their ISP's don't have enough sense to keep their system from being a spammer haven.
The ultimate Nielsen Ratings. You volunteer the info on what shows you watch and blindly hand it over to Uncle Ted!
Just think how valuable that info would be to the networks selling to advertisers!!
Shows like Buffy would skew way off the scale and start demanding much higher ad fees. Unless, of course, Ol' Ted decides that your TiVo can only pick CNN, Headline News, WTBS, or TCM to record....
Clean-up of the induction ceremony provided by Roomba....
Should not we also nominate Commander Data?
It would be the human thing to do.
Why do I have these mental images of Huey and Dewey wandering around, planting trees...?

I had my TiVo taping Slashdot, didn't spoil a thing! :-)
In the been-there-done-that column, I was severely pummelled once when I let it slip (CYA SPOILER HERE) that the Penguin died. Still limping....
And can we pick the city?

I vote for Redmond.
