Re:Croquet
Wouldn't it be cool if they had a "drop down" ability to use something like Gelernter's stream concept (example in scopeware vision) to search for, and jump to regions or areas (files/folders) instantly.. In a p2p environment, that'd basically be a search mechanism across a network.. K-rad.

Re:InnovateLinux really needs a killer usability app. Something like a personal google that would allow you to recollect ANY information you've ever viewed
This functionality already exists in stand-alone, third-party apps on MS Windows.
Three of these content-wranglers jump to mind.

You said Linux should innovate, but these ideas not only have been explored, but commercialized as well.

Re:Ouch
The closest thing to a workable scheme is Gelerntner's Lifestream stuff
I looks like they've gone beyond the research paper phase since 1996. Freeman and Gelernter have commercialized the concept and have dubbed it Scopeware Vision. I have no idea if it actually lives up to the hype but there's a free trial version so it may be worth trying out.

Scopeware and Evolution
David Gelertner, the comp sci professor author and unabomber victim, has created software he calls Scopeware. It basically organizes information in a series of related chains. These can be date based or otherwise. I haven't used it, but I've read that he is responding to some of the same concerns you mention.
On a less lofty, but free, note, Evolution has "virtual folders" in which you can place anything a filter expression can select. I use them to sort my email by sender address. I still have my main inbox, and all the categorized subfolders, but the virtual folders select particular people out of the massive mail database. So I can recall that Joe said something three weeks ago that relates to a current problem, and look in the "Joe" virtual folder to find it. There's still no easy way to add arbitrary messages to a virtual folder, other than adding a filter rule that selects just that one message. At least I haven't found a way. But it seems to address part of your concern, for email at least. -
Jef Raskin, David Gerlernter, othersPeople have tried. Jef Raskin has quite a few thoughts about new UI in his book The Humane Interface. You can see some of these in play in The Humane Environment, an open source project started by Jef to illustrate some of his ideas.
David Gerlernter also has some ideas about changing the UI based on timelines and visual representation.
As far as your wish about things staying open between powerdown and booting again - I'm not sure whether or not Apple's new user switching persists during shut down, but I think it may (have to go back and read up).
Finally, if you're looking for way-new interfaces, nooface blogs new and upcoming UI projects.

Screenshots (v1.0?)Since their "solid" and "reliable" web-server can't seem to handle a minor posting to slash , I dredged the web [google.com] and came upon an older (circa '01) article with some screenshots.
- Screenshots
- Scopeware - Stream view
- Scopeware - List view.
Pretty innovative stuff....eh? (sarcasm). -
